Resource Allocation Optimization in Local and Wide Area Networks through Social Network Integration

Published: 22 January 2024 Publication History

Abstract

Modern cellular systems must accommodate millions of mobile devices, placing significant demands on network capacity and performance. The predominant technologies for internet connectivity are Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) in the unlicensed spectrum and Cellular in the licensed spectrum. Emerging technologies such as femtocells and Device-to-Device (D2D) communication are key components of Fifth Generation (5G) cellular networks. However, there are challenges, including resource underutilization due to "Closed Access" policies in Wi-Fi and femtocells and the "Operator-Specific" nature of femtocells. In this work, we explore the potential of leveraging social network properties for end-user collaboration to optimize the utilization of these technologies while addressing trust and performance issues. We focus on developing techniques for power control, spectrum management, user association, load balancing, traffic offloading to enhance throughput, coverage, and mobility while minimizing cost, latency, and energy consumption.
