  • Abstract

The influence of shear deformation on the geometrical stiffness matrix in the stability problem of compression bar is researched. On the basis of original element stiffness matrix and geometric stiffness matrix derived by energy method, the coefficient μ are introduced. The geometric stiffness matrix is modified and the critical load under the modified condition is solved. The concepts of softening effect for stability problem are proposed by analogy with other scholars’ ideas. The results show that the bending term and shear term soften the compression bar so that the critical force will decrease. It is very important for practical engineering to consider the effect when design the structure.
