Rehabilitation pre- and post- musculoskeletal surgery: progress and opportunities
Jorge H. VILLAFAÑE ✉
IRCCS Don Gnocchi Foundation, Milan, Italy
This paper aimed to investigate the key elements of pre-and post-operative rehabilitation for musculoskeletal surgery. Following the PICO model (Problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome), we reviewed studies that focused on individuals who underwent musculoskeletal surgery and utilized pre- and postoperative rehabilitation techniques. The findings indicate that pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation plays a vital role in minimizing pain, reducing swelling, restoring range of motion, regaining strength and function, and promoting overall recovery. However, the effectiveness and outcomes of therapy may vary due to the diverse range of approaches employed by therapists. In conclusion, pre- and post-operative rehabilitation have proven to be essential components of musculoskeletal surgery, promoting expedited recovery, restoring function, and improving overall outcomes. Future efforts should focus on standardizing rehabilitation protocols and conducting further research to advance the field and provide optimal care to patients undergoing musculoskeletal surgery.
