During this period, such artistic practices as literature, cinema, etc., acted as Soviet institutions of memory, broadcasting the new agenda of the Soviet state, which included former white emigrants — foreign compatriots in the pantheon of Soviet heroes. Particular attention is paid to the events of 1965, the year of the 20th anni- versary of the Great Victory, which was a milestone both for the Soviet policy of memory and for the relationship between the Soviet government, society and foreign compatriots in general. The coming to power of a new generation of leaders of the USSR — former front-line soldiers was accompanied by the return of Victory Day (May 9) to the status of a national holiday in the USSR, and the memory of the war began to act as a national symbolic resource, including the memory of Russian emigrants — members of the Re- sistance movement. However, “trial” broadcast through artistic practices designed by the mid 1960s. The image of an emigrant — a hero of the European Resistance as a young Russian man of noble origin showed his ambivalence in a socialist society and for a long time he was not in demand by Soviet society and artistic practices, remaining mainly in the international sphere.

Destroying countless institutions (political, social, and economic) that undergirded both the Russian Empire and the Russian Republic that emerged after Nicholas II's abdication in March 1917, these events split the country's 20th-century history in two, dividing it into what happened before and after 1917. The Russian world of research and scholarship also underwent cardinal change. Each scholar and scientist, indeed, the academic community as a whole, faced a series of choices. Should they accept the new regime and collaborate with it? Where should they continue their professional careers, in Soviet Russia or abroad? How should they make a new life for themselves in this changed political, cultural, and institutional environment? All asked themselves these questions and their answers varied widely. The Russian academic community did not all share the same political ideals or views prior to the February and October 1917 revolutions. Its members' orientations reflected the range of political views in the society at large-from Social Democrats and Constitutional Democrats (Kadets) to extreme rightwing monarchists-and this accounts for the variety of their responses to the revolutions of 1917. In summer and autumn of that year, for example, part of the administration of the Imperial (now Russian) Academy of Sciences joined the Provisional Government; a little later, it quickly reached agreement with the Bolsheviks about long-term collaboration. The older generation of distinguished scientists and scholars-who had talked before the revolution about the need for the state to play an active part in the organization of research and scientific activities-were, in most cases, invited by the Bolsheviks in 1918 to head the re-established state research institutes. They became high-ranking Soviet administrators and decided how

The article analyzes the factors influencing the research of the topic of participa- tion of Russian emigrants settled in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the Resistance move- ment. On the basis of the documents of the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Em- pire of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia for the first time we present the “voices” of the leaders of the Union of Soviet Patriots in Belgrade (Yugoslavia) synchronized with the events of October-November 1944, which allow us to study their views on the tactics and strategy of the Union in the conditions of the de-occupation of Yugoslavia, including the interaction with the new Yugoslav authorities and white Russian emigration. The fate of the leaders of the Union of Soviet Patriots in the postwar period is traced.
This publication of documents on awarding Russian émigrés with the highest Soviet gov- ernment awards in 1965 and an introductory article considers the question of the influence of domestic and international contexts on this decision of the party leadership. The unique documents of the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History reflect both the interest of the Soviet intelligentsia in this action and of the state security agencies. As a result of the awarding, Russian emigrants, members of the European Resistance, were included in the Soviet pantheon of heroes and became a part of the official policy of memory of the Great Patriotic War. At the same time at the international level "award diplomacy" created an ef- fective informational occasion for propaganda among anti-Soviet emigration.
