CONFERENCE TALKS by Federica SGARBI
the purpose of resolving the deep spiritual crisis that the country was experiencing.
It was during that time that the Buddhist scholar Daisetz Suzuki (1870-1966) discovered the
work of the Swedish mystic Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772): he was deeply impressed by
the European author's spiritual experiences and religious thought.
Suzuki became a devoted scholar and translator of Swedenborg’s works, identifying the
Swedish author as a reference point for the spiritual rebirth of Japan.
Starting from this perspective, the article aims to introduce a philosophical Suzuki’s
interpretation of Swedenborg’s religion thought, with a special focus on similarities that
Japanese philosopher pointed out with Buddhism and his contribution in term of interreligious dialogue between East and West.
KANT AND D.T. SUZUKI: THE PARADIGM OF KNOWLEDGE IN WESTERN AND EASTERN CULTURE
EAJS (European Association for Japanese Studies), call for papers selected
“Mind and No-Mind on Beauty - D. T. Suzuki and Kant: Beauty in
Zen Buddhism and Enlightenment"
