Incidentally, Gastrochilus Wall. (P1. As. Rar. 1: 22. 1829) of the Zingiberaceae is an illegitimate later homonym of David Don's name (1825) in the Orchidaceae and is correctly Boesenbergia Kuntze (1891). However, the original specific epithet pulchellus of Gastrochilus pulchellus Ridley (in J. Asiat. Soc. Straits 46: 234. 1906) is not illegitimate (Article 68.1 of of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, 1978) and is retained for the same taxon in the combination Boesenbergia pulchella (Ridley) Loes. (in Engler & Prantl, Nat. Pflanzenfam. ed. 2. 15a: 568. 1930).

ABSTRACT This present third edition of the book attempts to further integrate information from various disciplines keeping in view the developments of the first nine years of twenty-first century. The book blends information on classical fundamental aspects with recent developments especially in the fields of molecular systematics, cladistics and computer identification. Special attention has been given to information on botanical nomenclature, identification, molecular systematics and phylogeny of angiosperms. The complicated concepts of phylogeny, taxometrics and cladistics have been explained with a view to provide a comparison between these diverse but interactive fields of study. An attempt has been made to build upon a common example when exploring different methods, especially in procedures of identification, taxometrics and cladistics, with several outputs of computer programs. A discussion on major families of Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms, especially those of major phylogenetic interest, constitutes a major portion of the present edition. The book contains nearly 500 color photographs of vascular plants. A CD-ROM of 772 high resolution color photographs is included along with the book.
