Introduction: Knowledge regarding projections on cerebral aspect of petrous temporal bone especially in relation to dural venous sinuses or at the site of dural attachments is required for evaluating and differentiating normal from abnormal. Aim: This study was aimed to observe the incidence and localisation of various bony projections relating to sulcus for Dural venous sinus on the postero-superior surface of petrous temporal bone. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 260 skulls (out of which 20 were obtained from cadavers during dissection and 240 were dry skull) in the Department of Anatomy, ANIIMS from April 2016 to December 2019. The cerebral aspect of petrous temporal bone was observed for presence and localisation of projections. They were classified according to their size (small- <1 mm, medium- 1-3 mm, large->3 mm), location, laterality and its relation to sulcus for dural venous sinus. Images were taken and the data was tabulated with percentage inciden...

Introduction Third trochanter is described as an oval tubercle at the superior end of the gluteal tuberosity. The importance of the third trochanter in pertrochanteric fractures have been recently hypothesized to be correlated with the fracture break lines in pertrochanteric fractures. The third trochanter may function to provide increased skeletal mass as a reinforcement mechanism for the proximal diaphysis in response to increased ground reaction force. The hypotrochanteric fossa is considered to be a varied manifestation of the attachment of gluteus maximus present on the posterior superior part of the femoral diaphysis. Due to the paucity of literature on the incidences of third trochanter and hypotrochanteric fossa in Indian population, this study was undertaken. Materials and methods The study was conducted on 152 adult dried femora in the Department of Anatomy, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India. The positive findings were photographed. The significance of the cor...

Idiopathic osteoarthritis of the hip has been currently attributed by researchers to the repetitive microtrauma caused to the femoral neck by its impingement against the acetabular rim. This impingement occurs as a result of abnormal morphological traits like Allen’s fossa, Poirier’s Facet, and Posterior Cervical Imprint that appear on the proximal end of femur especially on the neck. Hence, this study was undertaken to investigate the incidence of these traits in the Indian population and to find a correlation between the occurrence of the trait and the side and sex of the bone. The study was conducted on 152 adult dried femora in the Department of Anatomy, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India. The positive findings were photographed. The significance of the correlation was found out using Chi-square test. Allen’s Fossa was found to occur in 71.1% of the total bones assessed Poirier’s Facet in 31.6% and Posterior Cervical Imprint in 19.7%. Out of these, a significant side...

Several researches have been done on the measurement of angles of humeral torsion in different parts of the world. Previously described methods were more complicated, not much accurate, cumbersome or required sophisticated instruments. The present study was conducted with the aim to determine the angles of humeral torsion with a newer simple technique using digital images and image tool software. A total of 250 dry normal adult human humeri were obtained from the bone bank of Department of Anatomy. The length and mid-shaft circumference of each bone was measured with the help of measuring tape. The angle of humeral torsion was measured directly from the digital images by the image analysis using Image Tool 3.0 software program. The data was analysed statistically with SPSS version 17 using unpaired t-test and Spearman's rank order correlation coefficient. The mean angle of torsion was 64.57°±7.56°. On the right side it was 66.84°±9.69°, whereas, on the left side it was found to ...

The cochlear or spiral ganglion neurons are the initial bridge between the external world of sound and its discernment in the brain. As the developing human fetal cochlea is known to start functioning in mid gestational period, its anatomical details when compared with adults could vary with each gestational age. The aim of current study was to assess morphometrical parameter of developing human fetal cochlear ganglion neurons and comparison of data in each gestational period. Ten aborted human fetuses from 14th to 28th weeks of gestation were procured from Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of associated hospital, after obtaining ethical clearance and were processed for studying under light microscope. Area of neurons from each gestational age was measured on histophotomicrographs using image Proplus software. Standard statistical method was used to calculate area range and percentage of small and large ganglion neurons. The neuronal area increased progressively in successive...

Knowledge of structural variations around patellofemoral joint has helped to understand postural behavior patterns of various population groups. The biomechanical impact of postures may lead to certain skeletal modifications which may contribute to knee pathologies like patellofemoral arthritis, patellar subluxation and trochlear dysplasia. This study was conducted to report the incidence of skeletal non-metric markers on femur in Indian population and to understand their correlation with some pathologies of patellofemoral joint. The traits studied were Martin's facet, Peritrochlear groove and Supratrochlear facet. The study material was a collection of 152 adult femora from osteology museum in Department of Anatomy, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, India, with equal percentage of bones from each side and gender. All bones were evaluated for the above mentioned traits and results were obtained as percentage of incidence and Chi-Square test using SPSS version 17. The data...
