The authors draw from a multi-sited ethnography including: monasteries in the Buddhist Himalayas; an institute of traditional medicine in China; hermitages and Tibetan meditation centers in France; and immersion experiences in French Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Qigong classes. Our observations of meditation in such diverse contexts allow us to make distinctions based on the specificity of their sites, their practices, their techniques, and their inner actions. Additionally, our analysis allows us to identify four types of meditative practices: concentrative, open, introspective, and non-oriented. The results of this research offer an interesting reflection on the transformation of meditative practices within European educational and health contexts and contribute to the creation of new conceptual approaches for the study of consciousness-based techniques and practices.

Qigong, taijiquan, calligraphy, acupuncture, and martial arts have contributed to the globalization of this “traditional” culture. The term, usually translated as “energy” or “breath,” belongs to a discourse that has become common to a number of practices centered on the subjective relationship between mind and body: for example, practices of wellbeing and care, the contemporary dance and martial arts scenes, and spiritual techniques of contemplation. “Breath” can refer to Qi in Chinese arts, prana in Indian yoga, pneuma in various Greek techniques, and esprit (“mind” or “spirit”) in French biblical texts.

Generally, the intelligence of the unconscious body is not taken into account in terms of its relation to learning. This inborn intelligence involves our reaction to our surroundings and occurs without conscious awareness or anticipation of the resulting consequences. Consciousness can be understood as a rapport with the world that questions the interface between what is internal and what is external to the self. This issue is intended to contribute to this area of research through the analysis of situations and experiences within diverse contexts including freediving, dance, shamanic ritual, martial arts, taijiquan, qigong, and meditation. The field of STAPS holds the potential to become an interdisciplinary science that incorporates embodied cognition and that conceptualizes learning as the interface of philos...
