Edwards Amerikan Empresyonizmi içinde pitoresk manzaraları ile kendine önemli bir yer edinmiş, büyük bölümünü seyahat notlarının oluşturduğu çok sayıda kitaba imza atmıştır. Paris’te akademik ressam Jacques-Eugène Feyen’in atölyesinde resim eğitimi alan Edwards, 1884’te Amerika’ya dönerek Greenwich’e yerleşmiştir. Istambul’dur (1930). Kitap, sanatçının 1928 yılı sonbaharında Türkiye’ye gerçekleştirdiği gezi kapsamında eski başkent İstanbul ile yeni başkent Ankara’ya dair izlenimlerini içermektedir. Kitapta yer alan renkli resimler ile siyah-beyaz çizimlerin tamamı Edwards’a ait olup yerinde yapılmıştır. Kitabın başında yer alan Mustafa Kemal Atatürk portresi ile metin içinde yer alan İstanbul betimlemeleri özellikle dikkate değerdir. George W. Edwards’ın söz konusu kitabı, ülke tarihi bakımından önemli bir döneme, Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarına bir yabancının bakışını ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışmada amaç, Amerikalı bir entelektüelin, yeni Türkiye’de gördüğü yenilikleri, eski dönemden gelen tarihsel güzelliklerle kaynaştırdığı, resimleyerek anlattığı, nadir, ancak az bilinen eserini incelemek, dönemi çerçevesinde değerlendirmektir. ABSTRACT American painter, illustrator and author George W. Edwards gained an important place for himself with his picturesque views in American Impressionism and wrote many books, a large part of which is composed of the books in which he wrote his travel impressions. Having received painting education in the workshop of academic painter Jacques-Eugène Feyen in Paris, Edwards returned to America in 1884 and settled in Greenwich. Attracting the attention in regard to travel writing, Edwards frequently traveled to many countries, including Belgium, Italy, France, England and Turkey. Edwards himself illustrated the books he wrote, and was deemed worthy of many awards and badges from various countries throughout his life. One of the travel books that Edwards wrote and illustrated is Constantinople. Istambul (1930). The book conveys the impressions of the artist for the former capital Istanbul and new capital Ankara within the scope of his travel to Turkey in the autumn of 1928. All the colored illustrations and black and white drawings in the book belong to Edwards, and were made on-site. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk portrait at the start of the book and Istanbul illustrations within the text are remarkable. The mentioned book by George W. Edwards reveals the glance of a foreigner to the early years of the Republic, an important period in the country's history. In short, the aim of this study is to analyze the rare but little-known work of an American intellectual in which he combines the innovations he saw in new Turkey with the old historical beauties from old periods, tells by illustrating them, and to evaluate the same within its period.

The variety of descriptions is equally impressive as the variety of visitors; they have occasionally come to life in an oil painting, a book page, a travel journal, or a sketchbook. Izmir started to appear more frequently in paintings and engravings after it began to develop into a significant trading hub in the 17th century. Since then, the city has witnessed an increase in the number of foreign visitors in the 19th century, as well as in the number of works that deal with the city in various ways. Izmir, which looks like an outdoor museum with its ancient history, has frequently been depicted in letters, diaries, paintings and engravings with its ancient ruins, the ethnic and religious diversity of the city's inhabitants, clothing customs, agricultural products, bazaars, and streets. The 19th-century artists described their locations using the language of painting as they began to venture outside of their studios in search of color and light changes in addition to the richness of their subjects. In this manner, Izmir has created a highly welcoming climate for artists, especially female painters, and thanks to their keen eye for detail and technical prowess, the painters have transformed historical views into enduring works of art. In addition to their artistic worth, these works are significant in that they provide new details to those already known about the city's history. Researchers studying Izmir from all angles cannot ignore the unique knowledge it presents.
İzmir’i farklı yönleriyle ele alan araştırmacılar için göz ardı edilemeyecek eşsiz bilgiler sunmaktadır.

Abstract Laura Schirmer (1862-1894) was one of the most eminent American prima donnas in the second half of the 19th century. She received a special education from the leading professors in the European capitals. Schirmer was a highly talented performer known for her beauty. She came to the Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire and sang in the Sultan’s presence in 1888. After the admirable performance, she was given precious presents and appointed the court singer by Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Some time later, however, the sansational headlines appeared on the American and European newspapers stating that Schirmer and thirteen favorites of the Harem had been poisoned. After the diplomatic questionings and correspendences, it was understood that Laura Schirmer was alive and well. This sequence of events resulted that the Sultan stopped the singer’s large salary and revoked her appointment. Thereupon, Schirmer left Constantinople and went to Paris. In this study, we attempted to collect and evaluate different type of the documents about the topic chronologically and we demonstrated that ‘the alleged murder in the palace’ was nothing else than a mysterious and imaginary romantic rumor.

RUSSIAN ARTISTS WHO CAME TO IZMIR AND THEIR OBSERVATIONS REGARDING THE TOWN
Being an ancient town whose history goes back a long way and which has been home to many cultures, Izmir has usually influenced voyagers, artists or other visitors with various reasons for centuries. This old town described by terms such as Pearl of The East or Star of Levant, has become one of the most frequented harbours of The East after having joined the world trade network in 17th century. Those which the visitors - for whatever reasons they come - put on paper or the paintings of the artists which illustrate the town, involve significant details concerning the history of the town. Artists who have increased in number particularly in 19th century have discovered many subjects to be portrayed in the exotic harbour town of The East. Being the most visited Ottoman town after Istanbul, Izmir has astonished its visitors especially with the religious and ethnic diversity of townspeople. In this study, the Russian painters who visited Izmir and their impressions are handled. It draws attention that the Russian painters have been few in number when compared to English and French artists. Vorobyev, Bryullov, Gagarin and Ayvazovski who were famous artists of their period have approached this Ottoman town they visited with diversified styles and points of view. Keywords: Izmir, Russian painters, Ottoman, voyager, Orientalism

Istambul’dur (1930). Kitap, sanatçının 1928 yılı
sonbaharında Türkiye’ye gerçekleştirdiği gezi kapsamında eski başkent İstanbul ile yeni başkent Ankara’ya dair izlenimlerini içermektedir. Kitapta yer alan renkli resimler ile siyah-beyaz çizimlerin tamamı Edwards’a ait olup yerinde yapılmıştır. Kitabın başında yer alan Mustafa Kemal Atatürk portresi ile metin içinde yer alan İstanbul betimlemeleri özellikle dikkate değerdir. George W. Edwards’ın söz konusu kitabı, ülke tarihi bakımından önemli bir döneme, Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarına bir yabancının bakışını ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışmada amaç, Amerikalı bir entelektüelin, yeni
Türkiye’de gördüğü yenilikleri, eski dönemden gelen tarihsel güzelliklerle kaynaştırdığı, resimleyerek anlattığı, nadir, ancak az bilinen eserini incelemek, dönemi çerçevesinde değerlendirmektir.
ABSTRACT
American painter, illustrator and author George W. Attracting the attention in regard to travel writing, Edwards
frequently traveled to many countries, including Belgium, Italy, France, England and Turkey. All
the colored illustrations and black and white drawings in the book belong to Edwards, and were made on-site. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk portrait at the start of the book and Istanbul illustrations within the text are remarkable. The mentioned book by George W. Edwards reveals the glance of a foreigner to the early years of the Republic, an important period in the country's history. In short, the aim of this study is to analyze the rare but little-known work of an American intellectual in which he combines the innovations he saw in new Turkey with the old historical beauties from
old periods, tells by illustrating them, and to evaluate the same within its period.
Izmir, which has hosted countless visitors as a bustling port city for centuries and bears the imprints of diverse cultures, has surely been depicted in a great deal of art.

Abstract
Laura Schirmer (1862-1894) was one of the most eminent American prima donnas in the second half of the 19th century.
