The more or less scientific names with which we identify it – sustainable development, ecology, the environment – do not ensure the rise in generality that makes a common cause. Even the clear causality between cause and effect that results from climate change and is so tangible in the physical world that surrounds us before being elevated to a moral or political question does not succeed in constituting a cause able to gather together interested parties and unite their supporters. Can the aesthetic commitment the artist is involved in creating come to the rescue? Does it provide an escape route out of the paradox in which we have become caught up: to suffer from a causality that affects us all, without being able to support the same cause?

This two-voice text builds on Jean-Louis Genard’s remarkable article entitled “The decline or the end of the human exception?”. It extends a conversation the authors have been pursuing for some ten years on ways of dealing with the strained relationship between human beings and the living beings they are made of. Laurent Thévenot has considered how human beings elaborate personal engagements out of dependencies on the environment maintained by the living beings of which humans are made. Marc Breviglieri has explored the margins between the living and the human with people –children, adolescents, the homeless– who are in a position to cross these margins. They encounter Jean-Louis Genard’s thinking on the notions of autonomy (part one) and capacity (part two), while apprehending the human opening onto the living in its anthropological tension and in the symptomatology of the resulting troubles (part three).

This chapter investigates a new globalized mode of governing, operating, away from states, through voluntary certification standards. Considering the case of sustainable palm oil certification, it follows the most vulnerable “stakeholders”, from their daily life in remote rural areas to the governing public roundtables and private confidential negotiations. Fostering the dialogue between the extended convention theory framework and governmentality studies, the chapter shows that in a new kind of “standardizing liberalism” [libéralisme normalisateur], “governing by standards” shifts the political debate about power, legitimacy and the common good onto measurable certifiable characteristics of goods and services to be chosen by autonomous opting individuals.

The comparison includes a third approach developed by the author, the sociology of engagements, which crossed the paths of the previous two and specifies the points of comparison.1This latter approach deals with capacities, power and oppression through analysing kinds of practical engagement with the world that ensure such capacities, owing to mutually supporting dispositions of human beings and their environment.

The article proposes to deal with the variety of cognitive formats which cannot `commonize' cognition to an equal degree, relating them to a set of regimes of engagement with the world that are identified in terms of the dependency between the human agent and her environment. The good that engagement aims to guarantee orients how reality is grasped and specifies the format of what constitutes relevant information. This analysis offers new insight into the composition of communities as well as persons who have to cope with the plurality of cognitive formats and engagements from the very familiar to the most public.

A series of cooperative research programs which I have co-run in Europe, Russia, South America and Indonesia on attesting, protesting and contesting, have compared transculturally the ways and arrangements through which these processes develop, and the obstacles they meet. My contribution will draw on these fieldworks to address the issue of today's growing populism, in relation to frustration – if not humiliation – experienced when striving to take part. I shall pay close attention to oppressions caused by new forms of authority governing through standards and objectives.
