This paper explores the views and beliefs of the founding board and reveals the role played by the hesg in establishing a historical museum – the first of its kind to be created in Greece after the War of Independence. It also aims to analyse the moral, social and intellectual characteristics of the donors, as well as the motives that urged them to play a crucial role in accumulating material evidence of national history and the ethnographic origin of the museum’s collections.
