theverge.com We ran the wrong headline about Trump firing the FTC commissioners

Pretty high quality mea culpa here. I find myself regularly in agreement with criticisms of news media reporting and headlines in particular, but it’s not straight forward and this does a great job of laying out why.

There is a related question about news media’s responsibility to advocate for democracy.

blog.andymatuschak.org Successful habits through smoothly ratcheting targets

This is a really well thought out set of mechanisms to support creating new habits. I’ve returned to it a few times over the years and each time was about to go start building it until:

So far, I’ve successfully restrained myself from building my own tool. That’s a dangerous yak to shave!

themandarin.com.au Treasury trial of Microsoft Copilot comes a cropper

Sometimes I think 'mabye I should spend some more time using the thing to better validate my opinion', but other people keep doing it for me.

One of the most blistering findings is that trial participants who reckoned the technology was of little to use soared from 6% before the trial to 59% after the trial, an almost tenfold increase.

I'm very curious about the one percent of staff who thought Copilot could do nearly all of their tasks even after the trial.

sarahkendzior.substack.com The End of Days Inn

A bleak but also hopeful essay.

Mellencamp was wrong: anyone could be president. Even a career mafioso and seditionist — hell, he could be president twice!

nytimes.com How the New York Times Website Got Its URL

At some point, “I asked permission to register a web domain for The Times, and was told no,” Mr. Lewis wrote in the email.“Several of us thought that was shortsighted.”

Cute little bit of history from the New York Times. Completely tracks with my (much later) experience in the media.

abc.net.au Palaszczuk says Brisbane Olympic stadium 'already decided'

The ABC also understands there will be no net loss of green space.

I suspect the definition of 'green space' is doing a bit of heavy lifting here.

For the record, I'm against the use of Barrambin (Victoria Park) for anything but planting trees.

notes.ghed.in US$ 30 million to reinvent the wheel

The Free Our Feeds website is weird. There are no documents or anything that resembles something official. There are photos of some people, a manifesto, and a Q&A section with vague promises and superficial information.

I too find the #FreeOurFeeds initiative very weird.
