The concept of biodiversity is quite diverse, and it is related to different levels of biological systems ranging from the level of genes, species taxonomic richness to functional groups. In this way, depending on the approach, several indicators, conceptually unrelated, can be used to characterize and quantify the biodiversity of a given natural system. However, in practical terms, the biodiversity, as a characteristic of ecosystems, is an indicator of the ecosystem´s stage regarding its pristine conditions. Then, Ecosystem Integrity has emerged as an important indicator to assess the relationship between biodiversity loss and the impacts on ecosystem services in tropical forests, once EI represents a connection between biodiversity and the ability of ecosystems to maintain the self-organization process. The objective of this chapter is to present a methodological approach developed for generating an Ecosystem Integrity index at regional scale, for different phyto-physiognomies patterns of landscapes, using a probabilistic model based on Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN), and totally free web-available satellite products. The methodology was applied to Brazil’s Legal Amazon region. The results show that it is possible to quantify areas of the Amazon rainforest with high or low Ecosystem Integrity. Using the same Bayesian network, with updated satellite data, it becomes possible to monitor the EI over time, and may even serve to establish a monitoring protocol and planning of mitigation/adaptation procedures.

The selected practices included zero-tillage and integrated crop-livestock systems (also known as mixed farming systems) for cereal grains and beef or dairy production. However, the lack of monitoring procedures to evaluate the implementation and communication to policy makers and society in general may limit governance of the Plan ABC. Remote sensing techniques have strong potential to identify and measure the adoption of the selected practices, particularly regarding integrated crop-livestock systems in comparison with continuous pasture or cropland. The synoptic, multispectral and repetitive characteristics of satellites create a collection of data needed to map land management and understand the crop cycle, mainly in larger countries such as Brazil. In order to monitor crop growth along the seaso...

Those programs give a special role to multifunctional landscapes in the process to establish a sustainable agriculture. The purpose of this work is to present the Geo-ABC Project, an innovative project aiming at developing methods to monitoring, at local scale, sustainable cropping system (practices), such as: crop-livestock-forest integration and, at regional scale, cropland sustainable system (landscape patterns) in order to provide spatial indicators to support the ABC Program. Material and Methods: A mixed of different methodological approaches will be applied to study how the local variables are scaled-up to the regional scale, and what spatial, temporal and textural indicators derived from coarse-resolution satellite images can be used to represent cropland system at landscape level. Crop specific distribut...

There is a functional link between the tropical forest ecosystem biodiversity and their capacity for carbon uptake and storage as well as regulation of evapotranspiration flux. Nevertheless, land use changes and agriculture expansion reduce the ecosystems integrity modifying the functions related directly to the ecosystem services. The relationship between biodiversity loss and the impacts on ecosystem services of tropical forests, in face of the ongoing global climate change needs to be better quantified. In this work, we considered the concept of Ecosystem Integrity (EI), which represents the connection of biodiversity with the ability of ecosystems to sustain the processes of self-organization. Bayesian Networks (BBN-Bayesian Belief Network) can provide metrics for the generation of Ecosystem Integrity Index, from the training of probabilistic relationships of evide...

The objective of this paper is to test the potential of MODIS satellite data to detect vegetation dynamics over agricultural land in Mato Grosso. We especially focus on the estimate of the sowing dates of soybean crops. First, the MODIS MCD12Q2 product, composed of phenology transition dates, was tested at the field scale, but turned out to be unusable due to a large number of missing data and inconsistencies. We then developed an alternative method based on the MOD13Q1 Enhanced Vegetation Indices (EVI) time series. We applied a 3x3 window Savitzky-Golay filter to the EVI time series, and extracted the 2006-2007 growing period. We then calculated the dates at which different EVI values were reached (from 0.1 to 0.9, step 0.1), and correlated these dates to a set of sowing dates observed in the fields over the same period. ...

The strong spatio-temporal variability of rainfalls acts upon the agricultural calendar and then can cause important yield losses. For instance, the planting dates that occur before the wet season onset can be linked to potential yield losses. The aim of this study is to detect those situations using satellite data. On one hand, multi-temporal data of vegetation index proposed by the MODIS-TERRA satellite (16-days of temporal resolution and 250 metres of spatial resolution) allow analysing phenological cycles. Then, planting dates are estimated through a threshold-based method. On the other hand, rainfall estimates from TRMM at a 0, 25° spatial resolution allow detecting the wet season onset. The TRMM and MODIS data are then crossed in order to detect situations where the planting dates were anticipated as compared to the wet season onset. It appears than 20% of the soybean planted during the year 2005-2006 corresponded to such a situation. It represented 1 400 000 ha over the entire state of Mato Grosso.
