In this paper multivariate spontaneous EEG signals from three broad groups of human subjects--control, seizure, and mania--were studied with the aim of investigating the possible effect of these pathologies on the degree of phase synchronization between cortical areas. The degree of phase synchrony was measured by two recently developed measures which are more suitable than classical indices like correlation or coherence when dealing with nonlinear and non-stationary signals like the EEG. Signals were reduced to seven frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha-1, alpha-2, beta-1, beta-2 and gamma) which were statistically compared between the normal and the other two groups. It was found that the degree of long-range synchrony was significantly reduced for both pathological groups as compared with the control group. No clear differences were found in the degrees of short-range synchrony.

Epilepsy as one of the most common neurological disorders affects more than 50 million people worldwide with a higher prevalence rate in low-income countries. Excessive electrical discharges in neurons following neural cell damage or loss cause recurrent seizures. One of the most common and difficult to treat types of epilepsy is temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) which results from hippocampal sclerosis. Nowadays, similar to other diseases, epilepsy also is a candidate for treatment with different types of stem cells. Various stem cell types were used for treatment of epilepsy in basic and experimental researches. Two major roles of stem cell therapy in epilepsy are prophylaxis against chronic epilepsy and amelioration cognitive function after the occurrence of TLE. O presente caso clinico pretende demonstrar a intervenção psicoterapêutica sobre um quadro infantil diagnosticado neuropediatricamente com a Síndrome de West dos 4 aos 8 anos. Complementarmente ao diagnostico neurológico, o garoto em questão apresentava uma série de estereotipias e comportamentos repetitivos que apontavam para dinâmica de espectro autista. Sendo acompanhado por uma equipe multiprofissional (neuropediatra, fonoaudióloga, fisioterapeuta e Terapeuta Ocupacional) em um ambulatório de reabilitação clinica infantil, a psicoterapia tornou-se parte do tratamento pela dinâmica apresentada. A psicoterapia atuou sobre o quadro clinico principalmente por meio da ludoterapia e do acompanhamento psicoterapêutico e orientação familiar da responsável materna. A relação mãe e filho se apresentava dependente e tal dinâmica estava atuando de maneira negativa sobre o desenvolvimento da criança, acentuando o atraso no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor. Juntamente com a orientação familiar a mãe se tornou peça fundamental para obtenção de melhorias no quadro comportamental global e independência de seu filho. A partir do referencial psicanalítico se refletirá a intervenção sobre a dinâmica mãe e filho e as possibilidades que este referencial fornece para a psicoterapia infantil.

Alternating hemiplegia of children is a rare neurological disorder that in its characteristic form has few differential diagnosis. Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) encompass a spectrum of neuropsychiatric manifestations. Chromosomal regions 1q21.1, 3q29, 15q11.2, 15q13.3, 16p11.2, 16p13.1 and 22q11 harbour rare but recurrent CNVs that have been uncovered as being important risk factors for several of these disorders. These rearrangements may underlie a broad phenotypical spectrum, ranging from normal development, to learning problems, intellectual disability (ID), epilepsy and psychiatric diseases, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and schizophrenia (SZ). Epilepsy is one of the most widespread pathologies of human brain, affecting approximately 1% of world population. Despite the development of new methods of seizure control, chronic administration of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) remains the treatment of choice. Nevertheless, pharmacotherapy is not always effective.
