Edin Džeko national team caps

Please read this article about Edin Džeko National Team appearances it will be helpful to you. Best regards. https://www.transfermarkt.de/edin-dzeko/profil/spieler/28396 Unitedman97 (talk) 00:09, 31 May 2018 (UTC) Unitedman97 (talk) 00:09, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

As I said in my edit summary, Transfermarkt is not a reliable source and therefore should not be used on Wikipedia. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:15, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Dalot - Reply

My kind fellow user, had it on my mind it would be the first thing after I logged in to write to you, especially after I saw that edit was made by you (and AGAIN, one must note that my hysterics in summaries, applicable or not, may come back to bite me in my wikiass more often than not if I don't stop engaging in them). Let's go bit by bit:

1 - subject's name. Like I said in the summary (garbage-disposal material or not, I always convey what I am composing/reverting in my summaries), the Portuguese sports broadcasters have this idiotic approach (again I stress there is no racism attached to this thought, you know where I hail from) of addressing players by name and surname 100% of the time. Back in the day, they went one step further and addressed several players by a name/nickname compound, like "Pedro Mantorras", "Pedro Pauleta", "Nuno Capucho", etc. Heck, today we even have managers, with C.F. Os Belenenses coach being called "Jorge Silas" (as ridiculous as saying "Ricardo Kaká" or "Edson Pelé")!! Per the page move you suggest (wrongly might I add), this exercise: Zinedine Zidane's full name is "Yazid Zinedine Zidane", his full sporting name is "Zinedine Zidane" but he is to be addressed by as "Zidane", period (and never on earth would one consider moving his article to just "Zidane"), same for Dalot: "José Diogo Dalot Teixeira " (same sequence), "Diogo Dalot" and "Dalot".

So by that logic, we should have a "known as Zidane" bit in Zinedine Zidane, no? But that would be misleading, as his commonly used name is Zinedine Zidane. Per WP:COMMONNAME, article titles ought to be determined by the "name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources)". A quick Google News search would suggest that most English-language sources refer to Mr Dalot with Diogo in his name. The current article title is therefore correct, although I don't see why the "known as" bit should differ, when it's clear sources refer to him with Diogo in his name. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Good point, but my reasoning is the following: as Zidane is known by that LAST surname (as 99% of the players) that note would not be needed, whereas Dalot (and others) would as he is not known primarily by his last surname, "Teixeira". --Quite A Character (talk) 01:08, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

2 - sincerely, as I see you doing that often and I don't want to be a REAL wiki-nuisance especially with my (so called) experience. Is there a guideline on not wikilinking the publishers/akin in references? If so, why on earth why?! Speaking of publishers, the name of the internet content is "Mais Futebol" ("More Football" in English), it's two words not one :) The fact that the name is often shown "glued" is common practice I'm afraid, for example you have A Bola which is also two words ("The Ball" in English) but a google search will always show the name of the site as "abola". Regarding your SOCCERWAY question it's the same with BDFUTBOL when you add "manager" or "player" to the title, in this case I feel "summary" and "matches" to be SUB-titles and not part of the main one. When you click on the website, the subject's name stands out like nothing else (big bold black letters), so I feel that's what we should going with.

Per the Template:Cite web documentation, the website, publisher and agency entries "may be wikilinked". So I've no issue with them being restored. It's down to personal preference and the script I often use when editing that I remove them. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
What is grammatically correct is neither here nor there, we should be guided by what the website is *actually* called. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
It's probably fair to describe those bits as subtitles, but I don't that means they're not worth including in the title field. Especially if the same article includes other references from the same site with similar titles, e.g. the BDFutbol player and manager pages. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

3 - categories order: I tried to reinstate that which I have seen (or myself inserted) in several players/coaches, including many heavily connected to English football and from whose display there never seemed to stem any disagreement, which is: first PERSONAL categories, then profession (in Mr. Dalot's case a PORTUGUESE FOOTBALLER(S)) followed by his POSITION. Then the LEAGUE(S) they compete in their country of birth followed by clubs, then (if any) other leagues/clubs; then (always IF ANY) international cats, expatriate cats and managerial cats; I find logic in what you say by having PORTUGAL YOUTH/UNDER-21 FOOTBALLERS next to PORTUGUESE FOOTBALLERS, but since my M.O. is to have club and international stuff completely separated this occurs often. Being a (Portuguese) footballer is common to many a fellows from the top echelon to third regional division, but international status is a thing only a few achieve, hence the separation I produce/propose.

Per WP:CATDEF, "Eponymous categories should appear first. Beyond that, the order in which categories are placed on a page is not governed by any single rule (for example, it does not need to be alphabetical, although partially alphabetical ordering can sometimes be helpful). Normally the most essential, significant categories appear first." So that doesn't help us much. I think this is a case of the convention for English and Portuguese players being different, and there isn't necessarily a right or wrong approach. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

As always, sorry for any inconvenience (also and if, as I have seen in a couple of Portuguese sources, the player is leaving for United - I am almost sure that will come to pass, English clubs love to buy anything that moves, thus hurting their national team like hell, and Portuguese clubs also consistently love to spit on homegrown talent - I won't have anything else to do with (t)his article (on a related note, have you noticed as the piece rarely - if EVER - attracted a contribution from the UK before the United news surfaced, and is ripe with vandalism/smartassery since? Pathetic...), I know my summaries can very hard to see and/or decipher and it also surely seems I am displaying a bit of WP:OWNERSHIP... --Quite A Character (talk) 08:43, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Fernando Torres

Dude making Torres part of the chelsea season 14-15 makes no sense in terms of actual football. Shouldn't be included if he has 0 appearances. Frankly it looks ugly. Change it! Amo.al (talk) 01:30 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amo.al (talkcontribs) 23:26, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Not that I'm aware of. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:15, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Sadio Mane/Jordan Henderson

Hello, Mattythewhite, thank you for your message. This is regarding the reverted edits on the pages of Sadio Mane and Emre Can. While I understand the logic behind removing the repeated link on Emre's page, I fail to do so with Mane's.

Labeling Mane as a winger would not be accurate, since his style of play is not similar those of traditional wingers in the game. The roles and responsibilities of wide players have changed in modern football. This particular player does not operate ONLY along the touchline. His role does NOT involve simply beating his opposition fullback and deliver crosses. He acts as an attacking midfielder as well, if you observe him during games. Plays through balls, makes runs down the centre, gets into positions a striker would. The following link would perhaps reinforce my point regarding his actual position- https://www.whoscored.com/Players/109915/Show/Sadio-Man%C3%A9

Would also like to bring to your notice that Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah could be better labeled as forwards, rather than "striker partners". This would imply that all three play as strikers, which is not factual. Firmly believe that they should be termed as forwards.

Furthermore, regarding Jordan Henderson's reverted edits, please consider the following points-

1. Few of the changes made were grammatical ones and are logically sound.

2. Regarding references for the other edits made, I believe the following links would satisfactorily back them. He did start as a more advanced midfield player, especially as a box-to-box midfielder, but has been deployed at the base of the midfield three, the number 6 role, the defensive midfielder position. Please do refer these- https://www.thisisanfield.com/2017/10/liverpools-system-benefit-specialist-defensive-midfielder/

http://www.espn.in/football/club/liverpool/364/blog/post/3282423/jordan-henderson-the-scapegoat-but-liverpool-defensive-issues-run-deeper

Request you to consider my arguments for the edits made on these pages. They were not random, nor were they without evidence. Improving the accuracy of the pages (using the correct terms wherever possible) was the sole purpose. Hopefully, the edits I made would be allowed to stand. Cheers. Vinyl Guy (talk) 06:18, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

My issue is that the content added to the articles were unsourced. If you want to re-add the content, you could use the sources you have linked here, although I'm not sure whether whoscoreed.com or eplindex.com would be considered reliable. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:53, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
Hello. Your concerns are justified. But I do believe that the earlier versions were inaccurate and needed minor tweaks. Do think that while eplindex.com could possibly not be used as a source, whoscored.com is pretty authoritative and reputable in the footballing community when it comes to player profiles and statistics. I shall re-add the content along with these sources. Thanks. Vinyl Guy (talk) 09:46, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

To stub or not to stub, that is the question...

Matty, what do you think of a stub tag being added to João Pedro Reis Amaral? I removed it then notified the user who inserted it, and now come to you for further "enlightment".

The question is: even when/if an article is relatively small (in this guy's case one might say it is especially when he is 27, but he spent the vast majority of his career in amateur football, thus NOT worthy of encyclopedic mention) but if all its contents are sourced, does it still constitute a stub? I think not, but maybe my definition of a stub is not quite what it should! Thanks in advance --Quite A Character (talk) 09:03, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Looking at WP:ASSESS#Grades, I would agree with your removal of the stub tag and would say the article is just about at start class. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:47, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
Also, I've moved the article to João Amaral (footballer), in line with WP:COMMONNAME. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:10, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Phil Marsh

Nope. I think that's idiotic because it makes it looks as if someone never played a senior game for a club when they have, but if that's how it's done that's how it's done. Thanks for the heads up. -- KTC (talk) 19:40, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Incredible but true

Matty, could you please reinforce the message i sent here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Nath87#Notification) in case you see it fit? This user has taken upon themselves to remove (mind you, not RELOCATE, REMOVE without one word in summary!) external links in players connected with Kitchee SC where i edit regularly (so, i imagine they do it in the rest). At Krisztián Vadócz, they removed F-O-U-R (and i reverted) including one they apparently hate, NATIONAL-FOOTBALL-TEAMS.com, BDFUTBOL.com (played years and years in Spain) and SOCCERBASE.com (played with Motherwell)!!

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 22:59, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Warned. And check out the state of the Kitchee SC squad template! Mattythewhite (talk) 23:35, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Yes, never understood what's that all about! Fortunately, I think it's the only one in that "mint" condition... --Quite A Character (talk) 12:59, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Mugabi

What's the point of 11v11 when Soccerway, which is already there, suffices? Also NFT displays the profile both ways... GiantSnowman 19:10, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Actually, 11v11.com was already there before my edit. Soccerway was only introduced by me today. But I see no benefit in removing either.
Do they? All I can see is "Mugabi, Bevis" then Mr Mugabi's full name. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:21, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Ryan Fredericks signing to Spurs.

I know it and it's also covered by soccerbase.com external link. Govvy (talk) 17:27, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Neither of which is a reference. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:32, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
But external links can be seen and classed as a reference. That's the point of external links at times to provide additional support to the subject at hand, it sounds like you're disregarding the importance of the external links. Govvy (talk) 21:06, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
Not convinced. We should be explicit and clear when referencing content. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:14, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Ryan Fredericks

Hi Matty, Hope you don't mind but I've partially reverted the changes you made. The official announcement says he will join on 1 July (when his Fulham contract expires), so the article should reflect that. Nzd (talk) 21:41, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

I was going by the BBC report, which made no mention of 1 July. I understand, although I personally think it's a bit pedantic to not update articles for free transfers that *technically* don't go through until a specific date. And I'm usually Mr Pedantic! Mattythewhite (talk) 21:45, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Removing unsourced content

In the future, might you consider adding "citation needed" to unsourced content rather than removing it completely? Particularly if you have reasonable belief that it is not false information. Would be a much more worthwhile contribution than removing the content, in my opinion. Eng66 (talk) 01:07, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Or, hear me out, you could add a reference when adding the content to begin with? Mattythewhite (talk) 01:09, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Of course I could, although I fail to see what the two articles gained by you removing the content. If you're going to go to the trouble of removing it you may as well just add a citation needed note instead. Eng66 (talk) 01:13, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Assistance

Can a brother get a hand, please? I was trying to source Miguel Veloso's international goals lest they are removed, but left them in appalling display because it is not the type of chart on the matter I am accustomed to (thus, could also not duly relocate it to the stats chart - after club and int'l statistics - per WP:FOOTY guidelines).

Thanks in advance --Quite A Character (talk) 09:44, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Fixed. :-) Robby.is.on (talk) 09:51, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks @Robby.is.on: you got there before me.
@Quite A Character: if a similar thing happens again, please would you undo your edit rather than leaving the visible page in such a mess. Thanks, Struway2 (talk) 09:56, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
I'd 'done' it too. @Quite A Character: there was a large error message to the effect that a ref was missing the closing tag. Fixing that was all that was needed (and copying to the correct location); you'd written <ref name=xxx> instead of <ref name=xxx/>, note the closing '/'. Eagleash (talk) 10:02, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

I (kind of) see your point @Struway2:, but i IMMEDIATELY came looking for assistance after my edit, assuming it would be dealt with rather quickly. Sorry for any inconvenience, and thank you all for your collaboration. --Quite A Character (talk) 10:06, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Under same title is fine, because I also need "assistance" here... In Ander Capa, do we really need to play by the book that much (correct me if I'm wrong, but did you not mention back in the day that we could - or that you were of the opinion - update a player's new club before 1 July if everything was agreed on?)? I mean, if Mr. Capa fails the medical we can always revert, but the transfer has been CONFIRMED.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 14:39, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

If sources say 1 July, then 1 July it is. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:43, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the reverting further back on Ovie Ejaria! I had missed those earlier edits by a different editor. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 20:37, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Hey, from where I'm standing, it looks to me like you've breached WP:3RR on Kevin Amankwaah, then used a block to enforce your preferred version. I strongly ask you to reconsider the block, specifically whether or not you are the correct person to have placed this block. stwalkerster (talk) 23:09, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I agree I acted against WP:INVOLVED and have unblocked the user. Although I maintain that the user's edits at the article were disruptive and was trying to readd content that was rejected February last year. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:10, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
yeah you rejected and slapped me with a vandalism warning, again all guns blazing and no discussion. Your actions are disproportionate and I'm glad there are sensible admins who saw through this tactic Abcmaxx (talk) 23:23, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Question

This IP user keeps adding the "Expatriate sportspeople in Japan" to articles. In the pertinent cases we already have the "Spanish expatriates in Japan", so I think the former is overkill. I tried to upgrade that to "Spanish expatriate sportspeople in Japan", but category is not available.

What is your intake in this, please? If I'm in the wrong, I'll stop of course (and now, off to work in V. Guaita!). --Quite A Character (talk) 09:31, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Which IP, and to which articles? But having both of those categories looks fine to me. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:09, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Idiot me, forgot the most important (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/109.255.104.181)! --Quite A Character (talk) 14:13, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

The expatriate categories look fine, although I did https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Josh_Onomah&diff=prev&oldid=845440956 revert [this edit] from that IP yesterday for adding an unsourced category. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:20, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for explaining. As a "bonus" to you and WP, the citation tags you just added to Julen Lopetegui have been dealt with properly. --Quite A Character (talk) 16:33, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Icelandic League Cup

I can't find an official talk page on which to ask this, so I thought I'd ask you. The Deildabikar, have you any idea if wiki considers it to be an official League Cup and should therefore count towards overall career statistics? Just wondering, as it is a pre-season competition. Cheers. Beatpoet (talk) 19:25, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't think it's regarded as a first-team competition, at least the sources I've used for Iceland stats don't include it. I usually use Soccerway and the Football Association of Iceland official website. For instance, their profiles for Gary Martin (Soccerway, Football Association of Iceland) make no reference to it. Even though, I'd raise it at WT:FOOTY if I were you, for a wider range of feedback. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:43, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Igor Angulo

User:Jugon10 did it once in this player article on 26 June 2017 (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Igor_Angulo&diff=787633717&oldid=787445111), now they did it again and/or similar. They continue to insert YouTube as sources, turn refs that are well displayed into appalling ones, etc, etc.

This time, they went one up and started inflating stats in box (which you see in this very first "contribution" https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Igor_Angulo&diff=844558394&oldid=836593970). Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 18:13, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Slapped with a warning. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:27, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

I only saw your "pinging of me" now, went there and saw that Mr. Angulo's brother has already translated his request properly. I also see that the user reinserted their version AGAIN (only to be reverted by me!), doing that AFTER your conversation. What's happening with the stats is not so much vandalism as it is insertion of stats for ALL competitions (for example, the 30/14 for Smyrni was changed to 38/20 because the player scored six in eight matches in the cup). But the rest is appalling, and they continue to add the YT stuff as "source". --Quite A Character (talk) 09:22, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

REVERTED AGAIN, also threatened me with legal action!! Can you please do something? I have now reached WP3RR! --Quite A Character (talk) 20:10, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
Can you point me to where the legal threat was made? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:12, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

At the end of the WP:FOOTY thread i just created (where he wrote in SPANISH!), it reads "Tendre que poner en conocimiento a mi hermano para que ponga la denuncia correspondiente porque tenemos derecho a que las estadisticas que se indican en la pagina, sean correctas y actualizadas.", meaning "I will have to bring this to the attention of my brother so that he engages in the pertinent legal action because we have the right to have the statistics shown in the page correct and updated.". --Quite A Character (talk) 20:25, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Curiously enough, it's the second time this situation has happened to me. First it was the sibling of Jacobo Sanz Ovejero, with the same M.O. but even worse, took them two years or so to desist... --Quite A Character (talk) 20:30, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Denis Cheryshev

(also, see message above this one, Angulo's brother has reinstated his version AGAIN!)Per the ref i now added to the article, do you think i was correct to reinstate the category you removed or still not? In paragraph #3 of the article, it states in Spanish "Cheryshev, Russian international who also has the Spanish nationality as he spent his formative years in Spain...".

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 18:55, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

I think it should be explicit that the dual nationality is with Spain and Russia. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:35, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Beg pardon? If the article says he has the SPANISH nationality, and he was born in RUSSIA to a RUSSIAN father, what are the options? But i'll see if i can find another source... --Quite A Character (talk) 20:12, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

DONE! I think for more content we can keep the other source as well, but the one from El País contains exactly what you requested of me (end of paragraph #1, it reads "...and of the season which the footballer with Russian and Spanish nationality is faced with"). --Quite A Character (talk) 20:23, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

I meant what was written in the prose, rather than what is in the reference, which I hadn't even checked. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:26, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Ah, I see. Done as well! --Quite A Character (talk) 21:17, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Quique Sánchez Flores

Matty, do you think it's possible to protect the article? A user, infamous for their confrontational summaries (last known to me IP was this one, blocked https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/109.180.164.62 - and from his talkpage conversation with me you'll see why), has returned, picking on me in their summaries. My English is very good (now i'm done with diplomacy and false modesties) thank you, there is nothing wrong with the stuff written in Mr. Flores' i believe. Heck, they even revert the WATFORD section which was written entirely by User:The Almightey Drill, an ENGLISH user!! If you point out any shortcomings in my mastery of the language i'll take your word for it, but not this person's!

More serious: their last reversion resulted in removing all three refs i added to the piece (as well as my correction of other refs and the player position in intro), with another taunting summary. What can be done, please? --Quite A Character (talk) 19:13, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Ah, so it's the "Best known for" IP. I'm not going to be around much the next few days to deal with any situations that may occur, so I would recommend you raise it at WP:ANI. Be sure to mention who it is and the IP *should* be dealt with swiftly. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:04, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Iago Aspas

I know i said my English is up to standards, but i have serious doubts with my wording in the last INT'L CAREER info i inserted in this chap's article. I tried to convey he came for Mr. Costa who had scored twice (without actually saying "...replacing Diego Costa who had scored twice..." Why do people always needlessly complicate matters?), but i think the grammatical approach is a bit dismal.

Please correct away, thanks in advance --Quite A Character (talk) 18:40, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

I think writing it as "who had scored twice..." would be better. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:49, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

They are acceptable in high(er)-profile games in English football that Welsh clubs have participated in (cf. 1925 FA Cup Final, 1927 FA Cup Final, 1927 FA Charity Shield, 2008 FA Cup Final, 2012 Football League Cup Final, 2013 Football League Cup Final) so why not the matches of lesser prestige that get less attention? The reasoning for they are accepted in the aforementioned articles is that they are from outside the host nation, so I don't see why finals of play-offs, the Football League Trophy or the FA Trophy etc seem to fall exception to that. VEOonefive 20:55, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Just because they *are* present in those articles doesn't mean they actually *should* be. Whether you can acknowledge it or not, they fall foul of WP:MOSFLAG. This has absolutely nothing to do with the profile of the matches. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:10, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Denis Cheryshev

Hi, I noticed that you took down my edit in the Denis Cheryshev honours section that he won the Champions League as it was not from a reliable source. He played 3 games in the group stage of the 2015-16 competition when Real Madrid won it which qualifies him for a winners medal but I can't find any source (apart from transfermarkt) which states this. Would it be worth including this edit but just not with a source or should I just leave it? Thanks. TheLegend027 (talk) 00:42, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Felix Wiedwald

Just checking, Wiedwald has joined or is joining Frankfurt. Confirmed on both clubs websites but this has been reverted and no mention of the transfer or the move on his page now? Many thanks. (talk) 16:30, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

"Interesting"

Matty,

even though you have already weighed in on the subject in Julen Lopetegui's talkpage, maybe you could follow suit in the user's talkpage (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:87.223.155.254)? So, they ask us a question, we reply and then they say (in quite broken English) "no it's not correct, seems to me you just don't want to correct the article" (told that in my page, and in User:Kante4's he went even further)?!

I doubt this is a language barrier issue, but I have already reinforced WP's guidelines by adding a message in Spanish. It reads "Excuse me? How long have you been in WP (and I don't ask this with malice, but with good intentions)? I have been here 12 YEARS, and here in WP these are the rules: if a player does not play one league match, does not make then bench in Supercup and does not have minutes (not even bench) in the King's Cup he does not have the honour inserted. If you look closely, the wrong honours at Jordi Masip have already been removed. Regards". Did I miss anything?

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 09:00, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

It does seems odd. Even without particular sources, he wants it to be added with no new "material". You can read it at my talk page, i gave up at some point. We were in a cycle... Kante4 (talk) 09:02, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Regarding reverting my edit on Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson

Hi. You should've checked the edit history of the article better before removing my edit. The edit before mine changed the information in the article itself and sourced it with a legitimate source. I changed the info boxs because that hadn't been done yet. So by undoing my edit you only changed the info in the info boxes, leaving the article clashing. I hope you won't be as rash in the future. All the best. Dalitidlamadur (talk) 18:06, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Santiago Vergini

Thanks for your message re. Santiago Vergini edit. Apologies firstly as I wasn't logged in on making the edit.

There is no question that Vergini is most well known in the English-speaking world for his outrageous own goal. I'm sure you know the one I mean- if not [1], in fact type his name into Youtube or Google and see what it suggests first, if you don't believe me. Ask any Sunderland or Premier League fan. There is no denying that he scored a spectacular own goal in one of the highest-scoring games in the history of the most-watched league in the world. It's hardly a stretch on the imagination to include it in the article, neither is it aggressive or defamatory in any way- it's fact!

I get that articles have to be neutral, so maybe you should review all the following pages of players who are also most famous for an own goal; Festus Baise Chris Brass Peter Enckelman Andres Escobar Wayne Hatswell Jamie Pollock Michael Proctor Djimi Traore Jonathan Walters

As all of the above mention their notable own goals. With the greatest respect, what's the difference here? I suggest you either delete all their sections or re-instate mine. Dsims209 (talk) 18:58, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Please refer to WP:NPOV and WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:01, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Which I have read. Can you tell me how this specifically applies to this article and the others I mention? Dsims209 (talk) 19:25, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Isn't it obvious that describing an own goal as "spectacular" is not adhering to neutral point of view? Also, where does the BBC ref you used support your assertion that "Vergini is particularly notable" for said own goal? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:27, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
The BBC describes the goal as spectacular in the very first line of the article, if you'd care to read it. Dsims209 (talk) 19:29, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
So? Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a sports news service, so why should we mimic the BBC's choice of wording? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:31, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Is the BBC not a reputable source? I can offer the Guardian "a candidate for the most ludicrous own goal in Premier League history" [2] or the Daily Mail "the own goal of the season" [3] if it helps. The Sun also mentions spectacular and "most bizarre" [4] although whether that is a reputable source is up for debate. How would the BBC say he was notable for it on the actual day of the game? I think four years later with hindsight it is fair to say that is what Vergini is famous for in this country. Surely a reference to the goal is highly pertinent. Dsims209 (talk) 19:40, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I've taken the liberty of readding this without the editorial language. I think this is a notable event in his career, but agree with Matty that it isn't Wikipedia's role to comment on whether such things were 'spectacular or 'ludicrous'. We can leave that to the papers, which readers can see in the refs if they choose to. Nzd (talk) 01:27, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

RE: Ryan Allsop

It's not "unsourced content". This is where I got the info from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44534338 Samuel J Walker (talk) 21:35, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

It *is* unsourced content, because you didn't add a source to the article. You've been here long enough to understand how WP:V works. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:45, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Right, it's been put in now. However, I didn't appreciate the threaten with a block. Even though I hadn't added it to the article I had shown you at least where the source came from. Anyway, over and done with. Samuel J Walker (talk) 21:55, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Don't fall foul of policy, then. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:55, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

WP:HOUND?

Don't know what on earth is this, but i am starting to lose my patience. An IP reverts me in several articles on the grounds the club names are to be piped, but i have major difficulties grasping that concept. However, after getting tired i conceded at Cristhian Stuani and piped ALL the clubs - thus, actually helping the IP and WP i believe - not only Girona FC as they did; what do you think they did? They continue reverting me, and i am close to breaking WP:3RR!

Page protection, or message to IP (i already did, and even though my "letter" shows I am very displeased i did not exaggerate)? Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 21:52, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Which IP is piping what clubs and in what way...? Mattythewhite (talk) 21:54, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Can't you see the IP (IPs, seems there are at least two, but from same person of course) reverting me like crazy in Mr. Stuani's article? They only pipe Girona FC and leave the others unpiped, i compromise and pipe them all to help out and they revert still. Seems to have stopped for the moment (don't know how much clearer can i convey this, maybe i'm missing something). --Quite A Character (talk) 22:13, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
I was hoping you could provide a link to the IP here. Looking at their edits it's probably User:AH999 avoiding their block (yet again). Mattythewhite (talk) 12:15, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply, only saw your second "comeback" now. So, in Stuani's page we have this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2A00:23C5:8B0D:2100:DCA5:27EC:1620:4079) and this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2A00:23C5:8B0D:2100:5FF:AFA7:D14B:8070), but i see you have already blocked the latter address. --Quite A Character (talk) 15:23, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Vicente Guaita

Is this sentence correct overall and to the new and unsuspecting reader(s)? "On 2 February 2018, after reports circulated in the press, Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson confirmed Guaita had agreed to join the English club from 1 July on a free transfer. On 8 June, the move was reconfirmed."

I know i am not a native speaker so i may be missing something, but what's the need in constantly repeating "club", name of player or year in SAME paragraph? Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 21:32, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Unless I'm missing something, I only see "club" once, the player's name once and year once once. So I'm not sure what the repetition is you refer to. What I would recommend though is removing the "after reports circulated in the press" bit. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:22, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Ah, i see the confusion i have caused :( The sentence shown above is a mix of stuff i wrote as well as other users (the first time i "stepped in" this is what the sentence looked like https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vicente_Guaita&diff=next&oldid=823859858, it was not even i who originally inserted it), the reversion resulted in the current version which reads "On 2 February 2018, after reports circulated in the press, Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson confirmed Guaita had agreed to join the English club from 1 July on a free transfer. On 8 June, the move was reconfirmed by the club"; the bit of me referring to subjects/years being repeated does not concern Mr. Guaita's article, it's just a thing i have seen in countless articles, not just football ones mind you (but "2018" was written twice in Guaita's Palace section, before an agreement was reached).

P.S. I would very much like to follow on your suggestion and remove that "reports in the press" bit. But i don't feel like being re-reverted all that much (the Palace fan who reverted me yesterday is the one who originally wrote the "reports" part, check it here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vicente_Guaita&diff=next&oldid=844974735)... --Quite A Character (talk) 20:42, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

I've removed it along with other changes. Do you know where I can find a source Mr Guaita's 2007/08 Tercera División appearances? Mattythewhite (talk) 00:55, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Veteran Spanish User:Mega60 is always a good bet. But since they do not understand English very well, i will contact them and wait for feedback. Then i will report here, as soon as i can. --Quite A Character (talk) 21:44, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

WP:BOLD is probably the most difficult guideline for me to grasp, what does it mean when one engages in such a behaviour and everything is removed/tagged (and again, i'm not being a smart ass, serious doubt)? Believe me, the storyline bits which are tagged for citation will be sourced (if i'm not wrong i wrote them back in the day, more than 5/6 years ago), and the Valencia B stats/category will be reinstated, either by Mr. Mega or myself (also, regarding the publishers, since the name of the website is "theguardian", why are we allowed to write the separate words in the publisher/akin field and not in stuff like "Horta Noticias", which i AGAIN note is two words? Horta being a municipality in Valencia)!

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 23:02, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't feel as though I was according in accordance with WP:BOLD, I just made the sort of amendments I regularly make to biographical articles.
I'm glad to hear you're keen to re-add the Valencia B stuff, but only if referenced of course.
I'm a little confused, the newspaper is called The Guardian so why would we write it any differently? Mattythewhite (talk) 23:09, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

I guess I'm just making a mess of myself regarding publishers/websites/akin, I guess we should not waste (any more) time discussing that. Like I said on several occasions, your judgement is all I need in this case. I will work in Mr. Guaita's article now regarding the citations, in the meantime let's wait for Mega60's (possible, he has never failed me though) reply. But can you tell me, in a nutshell, what does WP:BOLD mean? --Quite A Character (talk) 09:24, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Tags addressed, thus removed (if I failed to do anything with this approach, please do notify me). Now for just a couple of things: 1 - no need for that club's full name in box and chart below, a quick Google search will yield many results for "Recreativo Huelva" as well for just "Recreativo" (similar situation for Celta). I've left it unpiped in storyline, but if it were me I would write "Recreativo" only in storyline as well, since people want so often/bad to pipe them in storyline (speaking of which, you piped some then left others unpiped in your edit); 2 - is winning the PLAYOFFS an honour? No it's not, but I've left your insertion untouched (P.S. so far, could not find anything for his Valencia B numbers); 3 - the youth stuff: I added a source for his club as a kid that you removed (then doubled it for his birthplace), it's clear that he played there before joining Valencia, the years may be (or not, you decide) a question of WP:BOLD in my book, if you remove again there's nothing more I can do, if the club(s) is/are allowed to remain then all will not be lost.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 10:39, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

WP:BOLD does give a nutshell description, which is: "Please feel free to make improvements to Wikipedia in a fair and accurate manner." Or are you seeking my opinion on it?
For club names, I was going by BDFutbol, which probably wasn't the best approach on further inspection. We would write Atlético Madrid, rather than Atlético de Madrid, as BDFutbol do. Although I'm unsure about your removal of Vigo from Celta Vigo. I mean, we wouldn't remove Athletic from Wigan Athletic, for instance.
Why do you feel winning the play-offs is not an honour? It is a) a competition in itself and b) results in promotion. So I can't imagine how it wouldn't be considered honour-worthy.
Thanks for re-adding the youth stuff with a source. However, the source doesn't support the years you added to the infobox. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:29, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

1 - thanks for the guideline summary, never bothered to read it past the B-O-L-D i admit it. But you can give me your two cents on it if it's not too much trouble; 2 - Celta is 100% enough if one is going to pipe stuff, like Recreativo i am sure there is only one club named like that in the world. And "Vigo" is not the same as "Athletic" with all due respect, the former is the city from which the club hails from. It would be as "negative" (for lack of a better term) as writing "Osasuna Pamplona" or "Numancia Soria"; again i note, a Google search for just "Celta" will yield thousands of results; 3 - if you're talking "honour" as in the dictionary definition of the word then indeed yes, a real honour to achieve a promotion. But medals are not awarded in these cases, at least not in Spain; like i said (and it was not even i who added the years/clubs in the first place, i just agree with their WP:BOLD approach), if you think it can constitute a BLP violation, then feel free to remove the years and leave just clubs - i will delve on the subject more, in the meantime.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 15:47, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

  • YEEEEEES! Took me less time than i thought. If you read in the eighth paragraph of the ref i've just added, it says "...y que desde que con ocho años empezó jugando al fútbol (trans. started playing football at age eight), y llegó al Valencia con trece (and arrived at Valencia aged 13), no piensa en otro equipo.". Just a question of doing your maths :) --Quite A Character (talk) 15:52, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

User:Mega60 has just come back to me, he could not find anything regarding Mr. Guaita's Tercera División figures. --Quite A Character (talk) 11:58, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Makes we wonder whether they were accurate to begin with, considering there apparently isn't any source for them. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:13, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Nothing out of the ordinary if you ask me, 31 (he has 18 for Valencia B in Segunda División B, "49", which are the totals previously in the box minus "18" is "31") appearances in the fourth tier for a 20-year-old at an amateur level. I'd embrace WP:BOLD and reinstate them if it was me pulling the strings, but of course i won't touch anything. --Quite A Character (talk) 15:27, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

I feel it would be a gross misuse of WP:BOLD to use it as a justification for adding unsourced content to a BLP, and would have been quite taken aback to see a user of your experience take such action. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:35, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Quite, hence me saying "...but of course i won't touch anything"... --Quite A Character (talk) 16:37, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Andrés Guardado

Can you please weigh in here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Flix11#Andr%C3%A9s_Guardado) or here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#Andr%C3%A9s_Guardado)? This is getting to be a little annoying. I know in some cases, FIFA does not count a cap but the corresponding national federation does (as in the case of Javad Nekounam), but if you read Mr. Guardado's RSSSF notes (check it here, below http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/guardado-intlg.html) will you see the match against Panama was SUSPENDED (and Guadeloupe was not acknlowedged by FIFA), how on earth are we to count that one?

Maybe, at the time of these lines, i have already been reverted. What's your intake on this? Thanks in advance --Quite A Character (talk) 20:40, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

Do we *necessarily* have to go by FIFA's records? If that were the case, we'd practically ignore the existence of Gibraltar, who competed in UEFA Euro qualifying despite not being recognised by FIFA... Mattythewhite (talk) 20:51, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

Good point, indeed. Mate, i'm really at a loss with this issue (Unofficial? Not recognised? FIFA does not count some caps and federation X follows suit, but federation Y does not?), so if anyone reverts back (yourself included) to 148 (not 149, certainly the suspended match has no business being counted!) caps i will leave that version be. No worries --Quite A Character (talk) 20:57, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

Did the result stand from the suspended match? If so, I wouldn't have an issue with its inclusion. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:03, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

That i don't know, but i can browse the web in Spanish and see what i can fish. Later, now i'm going to rest a while. --Quite A Character (talk) 21:10, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

AFC Bournemouth

I am a long term supporter of AFC Bournemouth and was about 18 years old when the name was changed from the unwieldy Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic Football Club to the more streamlined and continental sounding AFC Bournemouth with no stops between the A,F & C. The club name as per the website AFCB.co.uk [1] Nowhere on the website is AFC initialized, nowhere on the website is there any reference to a full name Athletic Football Club Bournemouth. Nowhere, at any time, on any publication or printed document has the 'club' initialized AFC or referred to itself as Athletic Football Club Bournemouth.

Companies House has the official details as AFC Bournemouth Limited [2] and see the Certificate of Incorporation as at 27 June 2008 on the pdf on this page [3]

So as regards the entry against the line title 'Full Name', there is no current and no historical 'official' evidence to support 'Athletic Football Club Bournemouth' as the full name of the club. What would have been the point in changing one unwieldy name to another ?

As regards citation (1) on the AFC Bournemouth page. Dickie Dowsett is 87 years old, ( born 1931 see wiki ), the name change took place 45 years ago. The citation reference states that Dowsett said that AFC 'stands for' Athletic Football Club, however just because he says that it 'stands for' does not mean it is the full 'official' name of the club.

Two or three years ago a Bournemouth fan did some podcast interviews with former Bournemouth players, one of whom was Dowsett. At the end of the broadcast interview the subject turned to the name change and the club logo. Remember the interviewer was coaxing information out of a old man well into his eighties and almost suggested to Dowsett that AFC stood for Athletic Football Club. "Yeah, that's right, Athletic Football Club" repeated Dowsett, seemingly keen to agree with the interviewer. I thought at the time that confusion would follow at some later date. I have no reason to disparage Dowsett, he was a fine player who I saw play a number of times before I was ten. However, latterly, he did live in the same road as my brother in law who would chat to him from time to time. Like most people in their 80's he would say things that didn't quite match the known facts. This is not a valid citation for an official full name

The facts back in the 70's were that the AFC was taken from Bournemouth and Boscombe A.F.C. but that AF & C did not stand for anything, neither were they an 'initialised' abbreviation. They drew on initials within the previous name.

Look at the wiki entries for Sunderland, Bradford City, Oldham Athletic, Huddersfield Town. These clubs have initialized A.F.C. because they actually 'refer to' full words in the full, official name of the club.

Please refer to the AFC Wimbledon entry, they copied the AFC from AFCB. No initialization, full name AFC Wimbledon -correct.

Changing the full name back to AFC Bournemouth should not need a published citation as citation 1 is incorrect. I have also edited various entries over the past few years, including the 'Full Name' from Association Football Club Bournemouth. The U-18 and U-21 teams were called this as recently as last week.

If you are able to, can you edit the title name from A.F.C Bournemouth to AFC Bournemouth.

Hi, I undid your edit on the basis that it was unsourced rather than it being factually inaccurate (see WP:V). I would recommend you start a thread on this either at Talk:A.F.C. Bournemouth or WT:FOOTY to garner editors' opinions. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:53, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Unai Emery Message

I do not know if the person who has informed you of this was pointing to the correct article, as i have been editing the article related to Daniele Rugani and i believe that the person, Vaselineeeeeeee, does not have the grounds to report me for something that i had clearly cited and stated in the change log that there were multiple sources that have confirmed the player's transfer to Chelsea football club that was put into the edited article. For unai emery's article i had simply put in his article that he had been appointed as the head coach for Arsenal Football Club under the teams managed column in his wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cooly35 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, not sure what you're referring to. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:24, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Adil Rami

You cancelled the information related to the participation of Rami to UEFA Euro 2016. This is not a minor fact, it is an extremely relevant information for a player career.

--Blocci (talk) 09:57, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

It was unsourced, that's why. See WP:V. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:24, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Kieran Trippier

Full Protection of Kieran Trippier for 12 hours? JMHamo (talk) 18:24, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Not sure we're quite at that stage yet but I'll be keeping an eye on it. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:36, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, could you please add Ivan Perišić to your watch list too. JMHamo (talk) 19:32, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

John Stones

I wanted to know why you changed the picture in the infobox to the previous one? Bayernfan2003 (talk) 16:44, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Because I feel it isn't an improvement on the previous image, which shows his face more clearly. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:48, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Lucas Hernández

Matty, please weigh in here,

as this player is French but CLEARLY of Spanish descent, was this mute (per edit summary) action correct (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lucas_Hern%C3%A1ndez&diff=849610266&oldid=849525008, regarding the phonetics of his name)? Methinks not, but if you see different please re-revert.

Attentively, best of luck for tomorrow --Quite A Character (talk) 19:07, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Can't say I have much experience dealing with IPA, but I'm not sure what use the Spanish pronunciation is when the subject is French. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:10, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Okeydokey then, i have re-reverted! --Quite A Character (talk) 20:33, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

  • Could the person writing in his article's talkpage (and those of his brother and father too) be onto something? I reverted, but now got to thinking maybe I should have not. But that Hernández is a SPANISH name, there is no question about it! --Quite A Character (talk) 10:35, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

On a completely unrelated note, had this not been arranged/decided on already (at Radja Nainggolan, someone reinstated the club's name as "Internazionale" per naming conventions after I saw - last month or so - several articles where the club was displayed as "Inter Milan" due to the SAME reason!)? Puzzling... --Quite A Character (talk) 10:53, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

No reply... Just a tip, you have been reverted again in the Lucas piece. --Quite A Character (talk) 15:16, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Re the spelling of their surname, I've no idea what is correct. Nainggolan edit has been reverted. And I can't see where I've been reverted at Lucas Hernández? Mattythewhite (talk) 16:12, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Maybe i'm messing a mess of myself regarding the constant edits and banter of the last days... Anyway, last IP is adding tons of YouTube (i stress the "tons"!) sources for the subject's name (YT is not reliable here, is it?), and i reverted. Am i correct or should i stop? --Quite A Character (talk) 19:38, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Upload File

Hi Matty,

I have a question regarding an upload file would theses files be okay. Here is the link to the photo:http://e0.365dm.com/14/08/16-9/20/MichaelDawson_3195047.jpg?20140824221522 The link to the web page:https://alchetron.com/Michael-Dawson-(footballer)#- (See references at bottom) and the link to the license:https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Thanks! Uebelhoer (talk) 06:56, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

I don't think so. The site looks to have copied their content from Mr Dawson's article on here, and that licence probably refers to that rather than the images; it's the same licence that is found at the bottom of articles. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:06, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
