Percy Jackson series

edit

Hi Perseus8235, Firstly, thanks so much for putting the requests for the copy editing of the Percy Jackson series at WP:GOCE/REQ. I've really enjoyed reading and copy editing these articles. Obviously, our copy editors work on these to help out, and not for barnstars. But since you are giving them out, can I ask you to consider giving those that our copy editors do not already have, such as {{Children's Literature Barnstar}} or {{The Writer's Barnstar}}? Thanks again, and I'll try to do more on this series as I really enjoy them. Cheers, and keep up the good work! – SMasters (talk) 15:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for fixing it. The reason there were fewer articles in there is because not all of the articles were promoted to GA this year, so I wasn't sure how points got counted and whatnot. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hah, thanks, but I don't think I'm supposed to be. I don't think I'm supposed to get credit for the articles not promoted this year within the topics. I'll take care of it later, but thanks for your help. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:39, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

You tagged 24.171.151.102 (talk · contribs · info · WHOIS) as a sockpuppet of Access Denied. The IP made only three edits. Access Denied created his account in May 2010; the IP made its first edit in March. What evidence do you have to substantiate your claim that this is a sockpuppet of Access Denied? (This is not evidence). You can't go around capriciously tagging vandalizing IPs as socks of Access Denied. Explain yourself. Goodvac (talk) 19:27, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I will...though my three emails all reveal my identity. One is my first and last name. Another reveals where I live. Another reveals...well, I won't tell you, though I have no access to Gmail at school. :/ --Perseus8235 16:09, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I believe that if you use the 'email this user' link on Fetchcomms' userpage, none of your email details will be given...tho without your email enabled here Fetchcomms will be unable to reply to you except through this page. Syrthiss (talk) 16:28, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that's correct. First of all, without enabling email, Perseus won't be able to use the "Email this user" function. Second, whenever you use the "Email this user" function, it includes your registered Wikipedia email address in the email it sends.
Perseus, just in case it's useful, both Yahoo and Hotmail will allow you to set up one or more extra webmail addresses without using your real full name or location. (Plus, I usually put in a fake zipcode because I don't want them knowing too much about me, even though they don't reveal that part publicly.) If you would like a step-by-step guide of how to set that up with privacy in mind, just let me know.
I used to use Gmail for this, but these days they seem to want a phone number for every email address you sign up, which I don't really like, especially in combination with the concerns about Google collecting pieces of kids' social security numbers.
Also, you shouldn't feel that you have to email someone privately - administrator or not - just because they ask you to. But it's fine if you choose to do so. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 16:36, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I hadn't been aware of that (the unable to email, and it tagging with the email address). I could swear that when I used it in the past it would just say 'wikipedia email from Syrthiss', but I just double checked and you are correct Demiurge1000. Syrthiss (talk) 16:39, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well, any email you send will show the originating IP (but if you really cared about privacy, I wonder what the IP testing earlier was all about). You can always change your email settings, though, to use a pseudonym or something, and you can always set up a free one. GMX, mail.com, etc. all work. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:35, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The originating IP thing is another common misconception. Hotmail (which I think is still the same thing as mail.com and live.com) used to include the IP of the sender, but they stopped doing that a few years ago and I think (haven't checked) they didn't start doing it again. I've never seen Gmail include the IP of the sender, and Yahoo don't seem to either (but my experience of Yahoo is very limited). The closest thing that emails from most of these services will include is the IP address of their own mailserver, which of course could be thousands of miles away or even in a different country.
I didn't see the IP testing, but, Perseus, if you ever want a web page to tell you your IP address, I suggest using www.whatismyipaddress.com, not Wikipedia. (It's also fairly useful for other people's IP addresses.) --Demiurge1000 (talk) 11:45, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a reference for the claims you are making about IP addresses not being included in emails? The headers in email messages are generally quite detailed and chock-full of useful information - even those from hotmail.  Frank  |  talk  13:42, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
They certainly do contain a lot of information, but they don't generally contain the specific piece of information that we're talking about. I'll send you an email through Wikipedia, and if you believe it has my IP address in it, please send the IP address back to me by email. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:47, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Looks like I missed some context; of course that doesn't contain your IP address, although it does reveal your Wikipedia-registered email address. What I was talking about was Hotmail; there was the claim that Hotmail doesn't contain IP addresses. Once you start private communication with someone - not the first email sent from Wikipedia but responding to them - the expectation of privacy is largely shattered.  Frank  |  talk  14:36, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes we're talking on several different levels. However, I've just checked the headers of an email sent to myself from a Hotmail account, and yes it includes the IP address of the sender. In other words, they've put it back in again. I'm still confident that Gmail don't give away the IP address of the sender, although I've not checked it in the last 24 hours. I've struck the appropriate part of my comments above (although that just leaves us with Yahoo as a recommendation, which wouldn't be my favourite - I guess I might try out GMX sometime.) Privacy is a many-faceted thing, and while I don't recommend people giving out their IP addresses, nor do they normally lead to an exact location or an exact identity. (So for example if you knew my IP it wouldn't tell you any more than which ISP I am a customer of, and that I'm one of about a 300,000 people in a particular geographic area.) From a child safety point of view (which is kind of where this conversation started) the normal recommendation is that kids don't have private online communications with anyone they don't know in real life, at least unless their parents are aware of the specific circumstances. How often that recommendation is followed, is quite another thing :-) --Demiurge1000 (talk) 15:22, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The IP address testing was because I needed to test the orange new message bar; oh wait your email account was hacked? Well, I know for a fact that Gmail does not give out your IP address. BTW, I used to edit a ton under an IP address instead of account, but changed to account because of "privacy" you could say...no that's an excuse. --Perseus8235 15:42, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've used four IPs in my life. The ISP's changed between many different ones. I've also abandoned five accounts (I am TERRIBLE at remembering passwords, and I would like a WP:CLEANSTART sometime soon. Maybe even today.  --Perseus8235 15:44, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

What makes you say Gmail does not reveal your IP address?  Frank  |  talk  19:11, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Frank, shall we continue this at your (or my) talk page, since Perseus is now elsewhere and can't (shouldn't) reply here? If you feel like replying to my earlier email to you, I will then send you an ordinary gmail message and you can email me back to let me know if it includes my IP address or not. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 19:18, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

No my email account hasn't been hacked, you may have misread something. As for cleanstart, other people can probably comment on that better than I can, but doesn't it say "Clean start accounts should not return to the same topic areas or editing patterns if there is a strong desire to separate from the initial account" ? Would you abandon any articles related to Rick Riordan? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 16:08, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Featured Sound Main Page Proposal Voter Barnstar
I was truly humbled by the overwhelming community support for the recent proposal to place featured sounds on the main page. The proposal closed on Tuesday with 57 people in support and only 2 in opposition.

It should take a few weeks for everything to get coded and tested, and once that is done the community will be presented with a mock up to assess on aesthetic appeal.

Finally, I invite all of you to participate in the featured sounds process itself. Whether you're a performer, an uploader, or just come across a sound file you find top quality, and that meets the featured sound criteria, you can nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates. Featured sounds is also looking for people to help assess candidates (also at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates.)

Thanks again for such a strong showing of support, and I hope to see you at featured sounds in the future.

Cleanstart?

edit

Hello Perseus8235, I was just curious as to why you are performing a cleanstart. I didn't see anything particularly concerning that would warrant one. Alpha Quadrant talk 23:58, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, continuing to edit in a previously-used account isn't a WP:CLEANSTART anyway.  Frank  |  talk  01:53, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is making my head hurt :-) Either Perseus' comment to my talk page was indeed the last edit he plans to make with this account, and he's now off happily starting cleanly in his new account, which is fine (except this account needs a "retired" tag) .... or else he has a novel idea of what WP:CLEANSTART means and he's having a clean start but without a new account, which is, I guess, umm, fine .... or if neither of those are the case then I guess someone needs to go find his new account and gently explain things to it. But for now, based on what he said above, I think we assume it's the first option? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 02:16, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

edit

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to   The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and   Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round.   Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to   Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to   Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. And I promise to avoid the behavior that led to the block/ban. --Perseus8235 15:24, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ask in September. Chzz  ►  15:37, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I had no intention to sock...just another "cleanstart". I'll be waiting then. --Perseus8235 15:43, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Doing another cleanstart would probably be perceived as socking. It would be wisest to remain at your current account. Alpha Quadrant talk 15:56, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Turin Metro update

edit

Can someone update the Turin Metro article so the stations from Torino Porta Nuova railway station to Torino Lingotto railway station are "open"? Source: http://www.railwaygazette.com/index.php?id=44&no_cache=1&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=12908&cHash=823584a6a8. Thanks, Perseus8235 18:09, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can someone update the Union-Pearson Rail Link article to say that diesel multiple units have been ordered? Source: http://www.railwaygazette.com/index.php?id=44&no_cache=1&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=12892&cHash=8edad53ca2. Thanks, Perseus8235 18:11, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can someone update the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County rolling stock section to say they ordered 19 more Siemens S70 Avantos? Blocked

edit

Please remember that you are WP:BLOCKed. I know you are trying to help, but by clogging up queues (such as {{helpme}}), you are (still) being somewhat disruptive. Take a break.  Frank  |  talk  18:17, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I try to, but I just can't! Over the months, I've become...addicted to Wikipedia. Blocks aren't the cure, because I still visit WP, reading ANI, AN, BN, the village pumps, reference desks...I just can't stop. --Perseus8235 18:39, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please listen to Frank. You are blocked. Since you are not blocked over at Simple, you can contribute constructively over there for a while if you feel the need to edit. Constructive and drama-free editing on Simple for a few months will be your best path to resuming editing here, in my opinion. If you keep putting up {helpme} templates here, an admin will probably get tired of it and remove your talk page access. 28bytes (talk) 18:47, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree with 28bytes, if you are addicted to Wikipedia you could edit Simple English Wikipedia. The mood there is quite different as it is smaller, and there is (usually) less drama. I wouldn't recommend trying a WP:CLEANSTART on simple though. There as there are only about fifty active editors, so it probably wouldn't work. Alpha Quadrant talk 21:12, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You might want to keep your "notes for when I come back" in a textfile on your computer, rather than here. Suitably backed up, of course. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 14:59, 8 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
