Sorry my mistake

Chris, your bot has tagged some images which were not duplicates which I tried to take off at the list page. But both times while I tried to edit the individual entries it seems to have blanked the page. Sorry. --Kevin Murray 04:25, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Please Delete

Image:CR41WesternBegin.jpg & Image:CR41EasternTerminus.jpg ;I couldn't figure out how to rename the files into north and south, so I created new ones. But you can delete those two because they are duplicates. Sorry for the confusion. Airtuna08 00:25, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Delete

Please delete the image ACv6logo2.jpg you recently tagged. For some reason, the first time I uploaded the original image file it returned a red x box instead of the logo itself, but all seems to be showing now properly.

Info copying

Your bot copied the file info from a deleted duplicate to the original image. Trouble is that it overwrote the copyright info, which clearly stated it was an image under free licence from the uploader. That caused a near heart attack amongst the Harry Potter editors as this was the first free image of J.K. Rowling to be found in nearly 9 months of looking! The image is Image:Jk-rowling-crop.JPG and the deleted duplicate was Image:Jk-crop.JPG. Perhaps you can modify your bot so that, when copying file info for files under different licences, it appended data instead of overwriting the licence? Thanks. AulaTPN 17:58, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

I've never heard of a bug like that before, but there's a first time for everything... This diff my bot's edit, but it seems to me that the mixup was on the next edit by User:Gavin Scott. Let me know if I'm wrong about that- I'd like to fix the bug if there really is one. Staecker 19:32, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
<embarrassed>Gosh, you're absolutely right - I completely missed the fact that the multilicence template was still there after your bot's edit. Please accept my apologies - tonight is my night for screwing up it seems.</embarrassed> AulaTPN 23:49, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

RE: Broxburn, West Lothian

I received an automated message that a pic I placed on the above page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Greendykes_Road%2C_Broxburn.jpg) is to be deleted. Could I please keep this file as I messed up uploading the image the first time. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Fair use rationale for Image:Greedo_shoots_first.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Greedo_shoots_first.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 23:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Non-free use disputed for Image:Greedo_shoots_first.jpg

  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Greedo_shoots_first.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 01:07, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Bleach soundtrack cover

Hi, your bot is really interesting. However, I recently uploaded a image of an anime soundtrack and it said it is suspected to be a duplicate of a desperate housewife character. Should I ignore it or get an admin to help? Any help would be appreciated. -ScotchMB 23:19, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

You can ignore it. The suspicious images are always checked by hand, and in this case nobody would mistakenly delete it. You can actually de-list it yourself by removing the appropriate line from the suspicious images page. Staecker 02:07, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Regarding Image:BigPondWebPortal-Jul07.jpg & Image:BigPondWebPortal.jpg

I was in the process of renaming Image:BigPondWebPortal-Jul07.jpg to Image:BigPondWebPortal.jpg (Because the image title is inaccurate) but before I could delete the original image (Image:BigPondWebPortal-Jul07.jpg) you went ahead and deleted the new one I had created (Image:BigPondWebPortal.jpg). I wasn't able to quickly delete the original image because I had forgotten the image deletion procedure and was trying to look it up. Anyway can you please restore Image:BigPondWebPortal.jpg and then delete Image:BigPondWebPortal-Jul07.jpg? --cheese-cube 02:58, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

OK I restored it, and reverted the Jul07 version to its original image. I'll leave it to you to decide which one you want in the article. Sorry for the mixup- Staecker 11:48, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

McBillions vs. McBillions2.JPG

I uploaded the second one because I wasn't seeing the changes in the first one. When you re-upload an image, is there some delay? In any case, the first one can go. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 07:20, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

There typically isn't an actual delay, but your browser might sometimes mislead you by caching the old version of the image. A hard reload usually does the trick. Staecker 11:45, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Redirect of IEEE Engineers in Medicine and Biology Society

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on IEEE Engineers in Medicine and Biology Society, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because IEEE Engineers in Medicine and Biology Society is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting IEEE Engineers in Medicine and Biology Society, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. CSDWarnBot 02:33, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Nice 'bot!

Your bot quickly caught the fact that I'd uploaded 2 redundant copies of the same image, one of which is orphaned and not needed/used for anything. I should have realized it myself (my browser crashed in the middle of the first upload, and I didn't know it had actually worked), but the 'bot fixed the problem instantly. I read your textual "flowchart" of the bot's "thought-processes," and it is extremely useful and well-thought-out. AaronL 23:27, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks- Staecker 23:42, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Mr. Staecker

I have repeatedly tried to list information in the form of a link, such as how a jigsaw puzzle is made and how a traditional jigsaw puzzle die is manufactured. To date, all attempts have been deleted. There are no other references to either of these subjects. As well as the fact you can't find that information on any other site or source. Jigsaw puzzle cutting dies are how the majority of jigsaw puzzles are created today - again, this makes it very relevant.

You can't allow some commercial sites without allowing others. Otherwise it appears you have some sort of personal affiliation.

In addition, in the commercial link you have restored, there is nothing new, that is not already covered in the opening definition of Wikipedia's. It already mentions wooden puzzles as the first puzzles, then later cardboard due to the reduced cost. Certainly nothing new or important at the site you restored. User:Gciesek 01:07, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

(Moved to bottom per WP custom) Hi G- I included the link as a reference because it specifically discusses "whimsies", which the image illustrates. That's what's "new or important"- it isn't covered at all in the Wikipedia article. If you have another reference for whimsies, then by all means add it. I don't have any personal affiliation with the website I linked- to tell the truth I don't know or care all that much about jigsaw puzzles. I just like whimsies.
I'm a bit confused with your comments in general- are you trying to insert links or remove them? It sounds like both. Wikipedia very specifically does allow some commercial sites and not others. Just about every external link from WP is to a commercial site. Read WP:SPAM for some external linking guidelines. I'd be happy to advocate for other links that you'd like to include, if they follow the guideline. Staecker 02:11, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

My Apolgies

Mr. Staecker

We have had a link with WP for over a year, which was deleted within the last month. It has appeared to us that some commercial sites have hijacked the term jigsaw puzzle and included their own.

We only resorted to deleting the commercial links after our attempts to restore our links were repeateledly deleted.

It is desirable of course to achieve all the attention you can get to your web site, and we believe, our contribition has been to inform and teach with content relavant, but not covered in WP.

I will not interfere with the Whimsies link again - I apologize.

The two links we have tried to list are:

www.puzzlemachine.com/index.html www.puzzlemachine.com/cuttingdie.htm

Thanks for your time. Gciesek 02:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

No need to apologize. But I'm not sure why exactly you want these links to be included. Do you work for puzzlemachine.com? (I assume you do since you said "we"- sorry if I'm wrong.) If so, then you really shouldn't be trying so hard to include them in the article, since you have a conflict of interest. But in any case, external links should be included because they give specific information or otherwise add insight to the article in specific ways. It sounds like you really want these links in there because it's good for your business- this motivation will upset people around here. Wikipedia is not a platform for you to exploit for publicity for your business. In particular www.puzzlemachine.com/index.html doesn't seem to offer anything to an encyclopedia (and has a really annoying soundtrack to boot).
As for the other one, www.puzzlemachine.com/cuttingdie.htm, I can't stand the sound long enough to watch it. There does seem to be information there, but it's in such an inaccessible form (can't read it all at once, I have to watch this animation with audio that I can't disable) as to be a real pain to look at.
I noticed that http://www.puzzlemachine.com/history.html does seem to have some real informational content to offer. I suggest you include it as a reference, in a footnote the way I did with the whimsy link. That way it will be clear that this page is being linked because it offers a specific reference for real encyclopedia content- not just a link to get attention for your website. Staecker 02:42, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
I would like to chime in here and say that, even if added as a reference, it is hard to get around the conflict of interest issue here. It is clear that they only want the link added because it brings traffic to their website. The history section that you speak of does not have anything that is not already in the article and itself is not verfiable, so I don't personally believe that it would make a good reference. I would suggest posting the link on the discussion page and requesting other editors input. --Chuck Sirloin 16:39, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

That happened because my internet froze while it was uploading and I just stopped and took the commas out and uploaded that. I wasn't aware that it had already uploaded. That's fine; go ahead and delete it. Thanks for letting me know. --L-Burna 18:50, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Your edit with a comment "rm unreferenced controversy/criticism"

Hi, I politely ask you please not to remove the controversial materials without discussing it and asking for a source (reference: [1]). Actually, russian-speaking internet is full of sources for the information you deleted there, and it is important to mention controversy about this singer, for keeping a NPOV. Thanks. Alex Ex 19:40, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

That's not correct at all. WP:BLP is very clear that criticism and controversy must be sourced, or else it should be removed. Some of what I removed was obvious POV material, and deserved to be deleted. Of course now that you've added sources, it deserves to be included. Thanks for your work- Staecker 20:58, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree with you on some points, but actually the major part of the section includes not biases and criticism, but the facts all russian mass media talked about. This guy insulted a woman at a press conference, which was legally and officially recorded on video, and attacked another singer in the restaurant - with whatever neutral words it is said, it remains a fact, and there is enough evidence for it. That's why the section is called "Scandals" and not "Criticism". And I didn't find where WP:BLP says - "delete all unreferenced stuff which may be controversal immediately without asking for sources or discussing". That's the point. Best Regards / Alex Ex 06:52, September 2007 (UTC)
I was referring to WP:BLP#Remove unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material, in particular Jimbo's comment. But I can understand that well-reported news facts are not really "contentious". Of course for someone with no access to the Russian media (like me and like most readers of this wikipedia) there's no way to tell the difference. Staecker 11:55, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:The emperor screen.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:The emperor screen.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 16:10, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Instructions for images

Dear Dr Staecker,

I there any concise information anywhere on Wikipedia on how to add images to articles from commons, and how to add images to commons? I tried to add an image to the article Saxaul, but it was deleted by your bot. I consder myself fairly literate in the use of computers...

best wishes, --PeterKristo 06:33, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Commons is a separate wiki from Wikipedia. If you want to upload there, you need to create an account there just like you did for Wikipedia. Then once you have an account on commons, you upload your image there (similarly to how you uploaded to Wikipedia). Using a Commons image here on Wikipedia is easy- you just use the image file name as if it were a Wikipedia image. No special syntax is needed, Wikipedia will automatically pull the file from Commons. I hope this is helpful.
Incidentally, my bot didn't remove your image from the article- it was removed by User:OrphanBot because it had no source information. My bot deleted another image which was a duplicate of that one. Staecker 12:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Your bot

Hello, You have recently made some claims about the photos I just uploaded (Image:Chris Bath on Seven Late News.jpg, Image:Sam Armytage on 4.30 news.jpg). They're duplicates because I don't know how to upload from the internet onto Wikipedia. That's why I was forced to copy them to my computer and upload them instead. Alltrainzfan 02:12, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Moving them to your computer first is the only way to upload into Wikipedia. Staecker 03:01, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

So what's the definition of "duplicate" on here? Perhaps that will clear the air. I believe it means if a picture is copied. But I have uploaded it from my computer. That's the only way you said you can only upload from the computer. The picture on newsreader Ian Ross is also uploaded by someone else from the same website. I have only said that it was a screenshot, and not uploaded from the website, seeing as it is still a non-free image. Alltrainzfan 03:49, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi- I just checked this out. By "duplicate" I mean two uploads that are identical. People do this from time to time. Pages that the bot thinks may be duplicates get logged to User:Staeckerbot/Suspicious images to be handled by admins (you can see that most listings on that page are duplicates). Sometimes the bot is wrong and lists images that aren't really duplicates, which is what happened in your case. I'll remove your images from the listing. Staecker 11:39, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

I scanned the pictures and made it myself. I just didn't have enought time to get used to all numerous Wiki rules and sometimes make mistakes. It's ok with me if those files which have been uploaded not correctly will be deleted. Numulunj pilgae 12:08, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Numulunj pilgae 12:08, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Can you put the image back? --InnerNerd —Preceding unsigned comment added by InnerNerd (talkcontribs) 04:25, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

The image was deleted because you uploaded it and marked it for "noncommercial use only". This type of license is not allowed on Wikipedia. You probably want to claim one of the fair use licenses. I've restored the image here: Image:Gene Edwards portrait.jpg. It will be deleted in 7 days unless you give it a good license- I hope that's enough time? Staecker 12:30, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Im sorry that I dont know how to properly tag redundant images and that I made some mystakes while uploading. Some of the bad resolution images were replaced with better ones today, and can be safely removed, while some were previously uploaded under incomplete names (only artist name without the title which can cause coflict if someone wants to upload an image of the artist itself for example) and therefore I had to upload some of them again with full description names.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Gillman.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Gillman.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Sorry

Hello Staecker,

when I wanted to delete User:ZayZayEM/evil usage/Footballers as U1, Twinkle ended up in deleting my talk page and User talk:Staeckerbot as redirect to this, what really makes no sense. I've no clue how that happened, but all revisions are restored again. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. --Oxymoron83 02:17, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Dominiquepinon.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Dominiquepinon.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Thank you. Thirdship (talk) 06:55, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Please reconsider putting Peter Boetkke back among Notable Alumni

I don't know why you would think that Peter Boettke isn't a notable alumni. The man's achievements are quite impressive. Consider :

1) National Fellow at the Hoover Institution for War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University

2) Visiting professor or scholar at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the Max Planck Institute for Research into Economic Systems in Jena, Germany, the Stockholm School of Economics, Central European University in Prague and Charles University in Prague.

3) Author of several books on the history, collapse and transition from socialism in the former Soviet Union.

4) Editor of the Review of Austrian Economics. The Review of Austrian Economics was founded by late Murray Rothbard in mid-1980s to promote research and the further development of the Austrian School of Economics. Boetkke is in fact one of the more eminent professors affiliated with the Austrian School of Economics. He was in fact the former President of the Society for the Development of Austrian Economics.

5) Has won numerous teaching awards, including the Golden Dozen Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Arts and Sciences at New York University.

In light of these, I would seriously reconsider putting him back among Grove City College's noted alumni

I think you've mixed me up with the other guy. I was arguing that he is notable. I agree he should be replaced- you are welcome to do it. Staecker 22:12, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
