Re: closing FT & GTs

edit

Thanks a lot! Apart from putting the FT/FTA in the wrong logs (see my contributions. The FT log vs GT log distinction appears pointless seeing as how the latter transcludes the former, but it's for the bot that does WP:FT2009), you got it all right, which is impressive! Extremely helpful.

Now, imagine how long it takes to promote a 25-article topic, fetching the oldids for each of those articles as you go... rst20xx (talk) 19:43, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest we get Masem to run the Smash Hits peer review immediately, and then do the promotion with that article included once the peer review has completed. Peer reviews only take 10 days so we may as well keep things nice and clean and let it happen like that - rst20xx (talk) 19:43, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

LGBT Question

edit

I'd like to start a new article about a LGBT artist. The only problem is a lot of the press I have on them is in actual magazines. How does one prove notability if a lot of the person's press (40%?) is in actual gay publications/magazines not online press. What would you suggest I do? Thanks. LGBT themes in mythology

Sorry about that revert, I didn't take the time to read properly. Just saw the line 'Chinese mythology has been described as "rich in stories about homosexuality"', and thought it was vandalism, just then saw what I had reverted. Sadly, a lot of additions including the word 'homosexuality' or 'gay' are vandalism. Sorry again, my mistake! -- NathanoNL [ usr | msg | log ] 09:56, 30 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Yobmod, thank you for your edit to the article. I have to point out however that one of the categories you restored is "1939 births", although the article now states Isay was born in 1934. Personally I would tread very carefully here, as this is a possible BLP issue. Born Gay (talk) 20:18, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ja - this is what i meant when i said the article shouldn't exist. Not because of failing notability, but the whole thing is a BLP issue, and considering the claims made could easily destroy a person's career, we shouldn't be taking chances on any of it. I'll leave a note on the new user's talk - i'm guessing from the name that he is the best one to find sources.
Update: I've left a welcome message explaining we need sources. I've also removed the category that conflicted with the article for now, and changed the one useful link into a source (removing the IMDB link). I'll make a stab at translating the source too, it'll good practice :-).YobMod 09:06, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

LGBT themes in Hindu mythology

I will love to help in terms of bringing the Hindu side of the story, including suggestions on myths and countering any bias or faulty interpretations by bringing in other POVs dr neutrality. About Mahabharata, I am said "after the GAR (not when the GAR is in progress) ends, I will initiate a revamp taking all the points on GAR into consideration". About the main LGBT and mythology article, you need to shorten the Hindu section as a main article is present, someone may object to its length and call it a case of WP:UNDUE importance. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:46, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

IFES

edit

Thank you for looking at the page, I was wondering if anyone was going to say anything about it.

Thank you for the idea on the regions, I was thinking about making pages for the activities in each region seperately, but currently I don't have enough information. I am torn: if I use a number of their own publications, I would be able to construct very thorough information on their activites and countries they were involved in; however, if I do that, that may create a really strong bias favouring IFES or opposition from other editors, that I am favouring IFES, etc. What is your opinion?SADADS (talk) 20:06, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Using primary sources can be difficult, but it is certainly not dis-allowed. It all depends on if you can remove any bias from the sources. As long as you are using them for only factual, non-contrvertial information, it should be fine. However, third-party sources are certainly required for proving notability. A few newspaper article or online news articles specifically about the regional parties should be sufficient. I would first add the regional information to the current article, and splitting off subarticles once sections become big enough. This gives other editors a chance to see your work before putting it in the more exposed position of a separate article.YobMod 20:13, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

What does this sentence mean?

edit

Conner and Sparks write that the link to Ardhanarishvara gives LGBT people in mythology magical connotations.[1]

I've looked at if for at least 10 minutes total, and I have no idea how to parse it.

  1. What is 'the link'? What is being linked to what, and what is the nature of the link? There are no antecedents for 'the link'.
  2. What are LGBT people in mythology? Is those supposed to mean gods/heroes who have changed sex or etcera'ed? Do we now refer to these gods/heroes as LGBT people?
  3. What are magical connotations? What does magical mean in this context? Even more unexplained and supernatural that the sex-changes, shape-shifting, etc, that is overt in most of these stories?

I guess this means: Connotations are to be drawn (I guess) about LGBT people in mythology (I suppose) due to some link (I'm not quite sure what) between them and Ardhanarishvara (Maybe??) and the connotations are ? Magical?

Help? --Nemonoman (talk) 12:37, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The link is that Ardhanarishvara is a gender variant being, and as LGBT people have traditionally been regarded as gender variant (homosexuality did not exist, so gay men were thought of as being feminised men etc), they are seen as being in some ways similar to the god (i'm no expert on magic, but i know sympathetic magic relies heavily on a similarity). As gender variance comes about directly from gods intervention, they were/are also considered to be special servents of the gods. These beliefs traditionally meant LGBT people had supernatural/powers, hence why people seek their blessing for weddings etc. I'm sure a better sentence can be written, i just said "link" as it was shorter. It can be moved to the talk page for rewritting and finding more sources for detail later, if that is easiest. If i find more examples of such merged gods with "links" to LGBT people, then it sould become a more general paragraph for the patrons section instead.YobMod 12:50, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

As a stand-alone sentence it is confusing, and I have deleted it. Your explanation suggests a better understanding than the sentence delivers, and I hope you'll write the fuller-explanation paragraph. I'm betting you can cite it too. I think you are doing good holding back on edits during these GA edits. Nvineeth(sp?) seems pretty tuned in, and I think I'm doing some good by working over some of the sentences; many of them get awfully dense. Watching us beat up your good work this way would be a lot like watching sausage get made: Not recommended and you're smart not too watch the blow-by-blow -- but the final product should be acceptable; and if not you can revise it.

Jepp. Nvineeth (I also am never sure of the spelling!) and you are doing good work. It's not the changes i mind so much, it's that they all are coming all of a sudden, after i had waited 6 weeks since Nvineeth's last edits and i requested copyedits and comments at the involved projects (all ignored). I only submit to GA when there are no conflicts and no indications of problems, but then everyone finds problems! :-). Unfortunately, my writing is like my speaking - dozens of nested clauses and dense packing of concepts: This is why i ask for copyedits, but i think the subjects are too esoteric to attract interest. If the GA passes, i'll do i only a little more expansion, then submit to peer review to fix any new problems. Thanks again for the review.YobMod 13:27, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hang in there and stay frosty -- this is very close to GA.

NEW ITEM: Same-sex sexual interactions occur, usually with ritualistic overtones, - what are ritualistic overtones?--Nemonoman (talk) 15:36, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hinduism has a number of rituals in which gods or their believers will have sex: This sex is not intended for pleasure or even procreation, but has a ritual purpose, such as representing a connection between natural forces. So while Soma may masturbate into Agni's mouth, this is not a romantic liason, but symbolises religious offerings (such as foods, "soma") being burnt (by fire, "Agni"). Different sources emphasise either the sexual nature or the symbolic nature, and that the sex is part of a ritual, to different extents.YobMod 16:04, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

During this period, Ila married Budha (the god of the planet Mercury), who did not tell his wife of her alternate existence as a man.

Who didn't tell whom what? Whose wife is whose?--Nemonoman (talk) 16:47, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Also: Both Valmiki's Ramayana and the Rig Veda tell the story of Ila...

In the Ramayana version, Ila bore Budha a son although in the Mahabarata...

Is Mahabarata or Rig Veda a confusion for the other version here? Is the story in Ramayana, rig veda AND mahabarata?

Ah, these sex-changes get confusing! Ila alternates between man and woman, losing his/her memory of ever being the opposite sex each time (and presumably memory of any events that could only happen to one sex). While a woman, she marries Budha. The story doesn't say what they do when Ila becomes a man, but does point out that she remains unaware of her curse, because Budha lies to her. I think the point of this is that nothing sexual or romantic occur between the 2 men, and that Ila is not a man's mind in a woman's body, but the secondary source just highlight that Budha knows about her existance as man and keeps it secret. The story itself is in the Veda and Ramayana, and then referenced in Mahabarata (which is more interested in the story of the child). I added the Mahabarata part, as it shows how the texts approach transexual parenthood (I think even today, people would argue whether a transman who had a baby as a woman is a mother or father, so the approach of calling him both has relevence to LGBT people.) Agni / Skanda fact check

edit

Can you confirm that Connor and Sparks ref describes Agni accepting Shiva's semen. The Encyclopedia Britanica article describes the "seed" as deposited in "the fire", so it's easy for me to confirm that this is not OR, but if I suppose it's right to assure that the citation provides the reference. --Nemonoman (talk) 17:09, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jepp. The entry under Soma in Conner and sparks has:
In Hinduism, a god of the Moon, a priest, and a divine beverage. As a god, Soma is sometimes depicted as forming a male same-sex couple with Agni, the god of Fire. In this relationship, Soma presents the offering, envisioned as semen, while Agni represents that which, or he who, consumes the offering".
Agni has a longer entry, mostly about his interaction with Shiva, but also:
"While he is married to the goddess Shava, he is primarily known for his relationships with the gods Shiva and Soma.... Elsewhere, Soma appears not as divinised semen, but as a god unto himself with his own semen, which Agni imbibes....Hindu sources stress that in this Mithuna, or ritual sexual coupling, Agni's mouth in particular, and his erotic role in general, should be interpreted as feminine."
Hope thqat clears it up.YobMod 17:20, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The recently added [citation needed] tag appears to question if Agni accepted Shiva's semen. Is this in Connor or Sparks? Or do you have an alternate reference. You seem to be Johnny-on-the-spot. --Nemonoman (talk) 17:22, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Skanda is the same as Karttikeya, just another name (see note 3) - i don't remeber writing that part, as it seems redundant. The Conner and Sparks source confirms Karttikeya, as in the next paragraph, as do numerous other sources. The many variations of Agni accepting Shiva's semen are covered there too.
Retigerxyz seems to have expanded on the into to Agni paragraph, i guess to make it clear as early as possible what is meant by same sex encounter, as to ascribe it to a source. I removed the name (Skanda) as it seemed so confuse the issue, making it seem like 2 different babies. I duplicated the citations used. Hope that clear it up - seems to be a case of an editor not reading the whole section,YobMod 17:25, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello even though the article has comparitively low volume, I think the older state of article is better than the current one. If you'd be open to dialogue on the talk page I'd appreciate it. Although I sense that neither of us really wants to spend the effort needed to improve and expand the article. In which case I'd like to have a third opinion, who is neither in association with us, and neutral to make an assesment on what to do. Thx--Sparkygravity (talk) 00:48, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

National Treasures of Japan

edit

Hi Yobmod! I just remembered this old discussion where you gave some useful comments on organizing articles and lists of National Treasures of Japan. In the meantime, two lists have made it to featured status, one list is a featured list candidate and the overview article National Treasures of Japan is a good article candidate. National Treasures of Japan basically has the Lists of National Treasures of Japan in it, so this list is not really needed anymore. I wonder if you could help with getting rid of that list, since I don't really know how. bamse (talk) 19:16, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Iravan

Hi. I am thinking of FA nominating Iravan, also known as Aravan and associated with transgenders. You have also discussed it in LGBT themes in Hindu mythology. Can you check the article for comprehensiveness using ref. used in LGBT themes in Hindu mythology? Also please point out any flaws in terms of FA criteria compliance. Thanks. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:54, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

edit

You are receiving this because you have commented on either Autogynephilia, Homosexual transsexual, or Blanchard, Bailey, and Lawrence theory in the past two years; all such commenters have received this notice. It has been proposed to merge these three articles to eliminate WP:Redundancy, WP:UNDUE, WP:POV, and to keep the focus on the specific Blanchardian theory of M2F transsexuality (in contrast to Transsexual sexuality, which would be to focus on the subject in general). Please feel free to comment on the proposal at Talk:Autogynephilia#Merger proposal. -- 70.57.222.103 (talk) 20:07, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Ginn Hale

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ginn Hale requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Me-123567-Me (talk) 03:37, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Missing reference for author Younger in Erotes article.

edit

I know that it's a long time ago, but on the day you first assembled the article on Erotes, in the revision 11:36, 7 July 2009‎, you introduced two references to "Younger". They were <<Younger, p. 45, "Eros/Cupid">> and <<Younger, p. 40, "Desire">>. They came to my attention while consolidating citations in the article. Apparently, a source reference for them has never existed in the article. If it's a reference still on your bookshelf, or that might have been in some other article, I would be grateful if your replaced my snippy "citation needed" complaint, in the "|refs=" part of the "Reference" section with the source.107.242.121.38 (talk) 10:42, 24 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

A tag has been placed on Category:Wikipedia featured topics Grade I listed buildings in Runcorn requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
