Glyph origin

edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *kaːm) : semantic (wood; tree) + phonetic (OC *kaːm); however, the phonetic component coud also indicate that the mandarin fruit is sweet. Similar but unrelated to .

Etymology 1

edit

Either the same etymon as (OC *kaːm, “sweet”) (Wang, 1982), or, in light of the citrus fruit's southern origin, possibly connected with Austroasiatic; compare Proto-Austroasiatic *ŋaːm (Schuessler, 2007).
