edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *ŋul, *ŋuls) : phonetic (OC *ŋɡuls) + semantic (bull).

Etymology

edit

According to Schuessler (2007), (Later Han Chinese ŋuɨ) is the same etymon as (OC *grui ~ *gwrə) and was borrowed into Later Han Chinese from a Tibeto-Burman language, though ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *lwa:j (buffalo).
