First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 울〮에 (Yale: wúlGèy), from 우르다〮 (wùlùtá, “to roar”).

• 우뢰 (uroe, “thunder”), from the erroneous etymological association with 우뢰(雨雷) (uroe)
