From English vetsin, a genericized trademark of Tien Chu Ve-Tsin food company, or its particular Chinese reading in Hokkien 味精 (bī-cheng). The Ve-Tsin (味精) trademark itself comes from Shanghainese 味精 (6vi-cin1), which is ultimately from Japanese ()(せい) (misei).
