daiju
Finnish
editEtymology
editThrough Helsinki slang, attested since the early 20th century. Apparantly borrowed from Russian даю́ (dajú, “I give (a beating)”), conjugated form of Russian дава́ть (davátʹ, “to give”) in the expression Russian даю по морде (daju po morde, “to beat up”, literally “to give to the face”). Compare mortu (“face”) from old Vyborg slang.
