Inherited from Ottoman Turkish فترت (fetret),[1][2] from Arabic فَتْرَة (fatra, interval, interregnum).[3]

  1. (religion, Islam, dated) The interval between two prophets when there isn't a prophet alive; specifically the time between prophets Jesus and Muhammad.
  2. (dated) The interval between two monarchs; interregnum.
  3. (dated) The interval between two events.
  4. (dated) The period until a weak central government regains power and order is restored.
