editFrom an unattested *umë, from Proto-Albanian *wamā, from Proto-Indo-European *wemh₁- (“to vomit”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐμέω (eméō, “to spit out”), Latin vomō (“to vomit”), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬨 (vam, “to spit”), Sanskrit वमिति (vámiti, “to vomit”).
