Alfred Hollings (13 May 1906 – 5 March 1988) was a New Zealand cricketer. He played in seven first-class matches for Wellington from 1926 to 1930.[1][2]
Origin
Born in Billericay, Essex, England on 13 May 1906 as Alfred Maurice Hollings to Alfred William George Hollings and Mary Margaret Hollings.[3] He obained a Bachelor of Laws from Victoria Univesity in June 1928.[4] Hollings married Lilian Etta May Gilbert in 1930.
Career
On 1 January 1930 T U Ronayne admitted Hollings into partnership and formed Ronayne and A M Hollings, a legal firm based in Wellington. Prior to that Hollings had been Ronayne's Managing Clerk.[5] Hollings had been admitted to the bar in 1929.[6] The firm was dissolved in 1945 when Hollings acquired W P Coles interest in the firm Phillips and Coles. With the acquisition the firm was renamed. In Petone it was known as Phillips Coles Hollings and Shayle-George, and in Wellington it was known as Phillips Hollings and Shayle-George.[7]
Cricket
Hollings played seven first class cricket matches for Wellington, New Zealand. Five of these were Plunket Shield matches.[8],[3] The matches were three against Auckland. two against the touring Marlybone Cricket Club and Otago, and one against Canterbury between 25 December 1926 and 7 March 1930.[1] On 25 February 1927 Hollings played for Wellington against the Melbourne Cricket Club.[8]
In Wellington senior club cricket Hollings was, in 1927, one of only five players who had scored three double centuries in a season in the previous almost 30 years.[9] Earlier that year the Wellington Cricket Association had unsuccessfully nominated Hollings for the New Zealand team.[10]
In 1933 Holling was appointed Assistant Secretary for the Wellington Cricket Association.[11] During his cricketing career Holings played at the senior club level for Varsity ([[Victoria University) from 1925 to 1929, Wellington from 1929 to 1933, and Karori from 1934 until 1937.
World War 2
Hollings served as an intelligence officer with RNZAF number 19 Squadron in the Bouganville area until October 1944 when he resumed his law career.[12]
Death
Died 5 March 1988 at Paraparaumu, New Zealand.
