His use of a true "jazz baton" is not cited anywhere in the article, nor elsewhere on the internet. However, a search query of "Valery Gergiev toothpick baton" brings up many results of all types. In September of 2009, Gergiev used a toothpick for the first time in a performance of Daphnes and Chloe in an effort to spite critics who did not approve of his prior conducting without a baton. undo
