Former speedway in Savannah, Georgia
The Savannah Speedway was a half-mile long oval track speedway in Savannah, Georgia .[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] [ 4] [ 5] It made it's debut in 1962.[ 2] [ 4] The track hosted 10 NASCAR Grand National Cup Series events throughout it's history, 2 of which Richard Petty won.[ 1] [ 4]
History
The racetrack opened in late 1960 as a 1/4-mile dirt oval, then in 1961 they paved it & made it more D-shaped.[ 4] In 1962 they expanded the track to a 1/2-mile track.[ 4] The track was re-paved and ran un-successfuly for years. In 1981 the pavement was pulled up & dirt racing resumed but it then closed in June of that year never to run again.[ 4]
