Heidi Blair Pratt (née Montag; September 15, 1986)[1] is an American reality television personality. Born and raised in Colorado, she befriended Lauren Conrad at a young age. This resulted in her appearing in the MTV reality television series The Hills, with both girls joining the main cast. The series proved to be a success for the network, and the cast received a large amount of media attention. Montag began a romantic relationship with Spencer Pratt in the show's second season, and the pair quickly developed a villainous role on the show. This carried over into their professional lives, with the couple becoming infamous in the media for their antics as a couple and feuds with other celebrities. Montag found herself the target of media scrutiny as a result of multiple plastic surgery procedures and an attempt at launching a music career.
The couple began to experience less attention from the public after the conclusion of The Hills, though continued to appear on a number of reality television programs throughout the years. The garnered a fan following in the United Kingdom after appearing on Celebrity Big Brother, where the couple came in second place. This resulted in two television specials on the couple, as well as a second chance on a future season of the series. The couple announced Heidi's pregnancy in 2017, and she gave birth to their first son that October. The pair made their return to MTV when they joined the cast of The Hills: New Beginnings, a new series featuring several of the original show's cast members.
Biography
1986-2005: Childhood and career beginnings
Heidi Blair Montag was born September 15, 1986, in Crested Butte, Colorado.[1] She is the daughter of Darlene and William "Bill" Montag.[2] She has an older sister, Holly Montag, as well as a younger brother named Sky.[3] Montag's parents divorced when she was a child, and her mother went on to marry Tim Egelhoff, a restaurant owner.[4] Her father married Terri O'Hara, who had two children named Eric and Carissa. In 2008, Eric was killed in an accidental fall from an icy roof.[5] Montag's father would go on to be charged by stepdaughter Carissa Berlet with aggravated incest and sexual assault on a child in 2015, with the reported incidents occurring from 1993 to 1998.[6][7][8] Despite an initial plead of not guilty, he would go on to plead guilty in 2016.[9][10] He was sentenced to four years of probation, and avoided jail time due to a plea deal.[11] Heidi stood by her father during the incident, and has spoken on her belief he is innocent.[12][13][14]
Montag traveled to Italy for a study abroad program when she was seventeen.[15] Upon graduating from high school, Montag moved to California to attend the Academy of Art University, and met Lauren Conrad on her first day at the school.[16][17] Though Conrad had found success as a cast member on an MTV television series, Montag claimed to not know who Conrad was in large part due to her time spent out of the country.[18] The girls became fast friends, and Montag appeared in four episodes of Conrad's television show as a result.[19] Conrad landed the starring role in an upcoming spin-off series called The Hills, and Montag was asked to join the cast as well.[20] The series was set to chronicle their lives as students at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, where the pair transferred to after only one semester at their previous college.[21][22] Despite this, Montag dropped out of the college after only a few days of attending class.[23][24][25]
2006-10: Mainstream attention through MTV and music career
With Montag in a starring role, The Hills premiered on MTV in 2006.[26] The show chronicled the personal life of the show's cast members, including their jobs and Montag's relationship with Jordan Eubanks in the first season.[27] Despite being marketed as a reality series, the show was revealed in later years to have fabricated a number of storylines and drama.[28][29][30] Though she was shown working at Bolthouse Productions for a long period of time,[31][32] Montag confirmed that she had never actually been an employee for the company.[33][34][35] The cast also made no mention of the fact they were on a television show, and their rise to fame and career moves such as Montag's music career were not acknowledged on the show.[36] The show was an instant success, and the cast quickly became tabloid fixtures.[37][38] Montag began dating Spencer Pratt in 2007, and a series of events involving Pratt ended her friendship with Conrad.[39][40][41] With their friendship over, the remainder of Montag's storylines on the show involved her relationship and eventual marriage to Pratt.[42][43]
Montag and Pratt's antics on the series led to them becoming frequent targets in the media.[44][45] Given the nickname "Speidi", the pair made headlines due to their relationship and feuds with other celebrities throughout the years.[46][47][48] Montag underwent a breast augmentation and rhinoplasty in 2007.[49] She announced plans to launch her music career after meeting with David Foster,[50][51] and released the song "Higher" in 2008.[52][53] Pratt filmed a music video for the song with Heidi, including shots of Montag in a bikini on the beach.[54] The track and music video were met with a harsh reaction from critics and listeners.[55][56] She released the songs "No More" and "Overdosin" in the following months, both of which received a similar reaction.[57] Montag partnered with Anchor Blue to launch her "Heidiwood" fashion label in 2008.[58][59] The line was met with a mixed reaction,[60][61] though was seen as a commercial failure.[62] The brand confirmed after the line's one-year contract was over that they would not be renewing their contract with Montag for a second run.[63][64][65]
Montag and Pratt eloped in Mexico on November 20, 2008; their wedding was filmed for an episode of The Hills.[66][67] The couple held a wedding ceremony in Pasadena, California on April 25, 2009.[67][68] Montag and Pratt guest starred on an episode of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother in 2009, portraying fictional versions of themselves.[69][70][71] She continued to record music for her debut album, and released two promotional extended plays in April and August.[72][73] The projects featured songs that had leaked online since she began recording the album.[74] Montag and Pratt next joined the cast of the second season of the celebrity competition I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in support of the Feed the Children foundation.[75] The couple found themselves the center of much drama during their time on the show, and ultimately quit after eight days when Montag had to be hospitalized.[76][77][78] Montag and Pratt received backlash due to the antagonistic role they played on the show, as well as claims after the fact about the production.[79][80]
The couple released a book on "how to be famous" that November, which continued the streak of negative press for the couple.[81][82] Montag released the song "Body Language" as the intended lead single to her album, though it was ultimately not included on the final track list.[83] She performed the song at Miss Universe 2009 in a performance that drew inspiration from Britney Spears.[84] Montag's appearance was met with a negative reaction, receiving criticism for not singing live as well as the overall production.[85][86][87] She released her debut album, Superficial (2010), on January 11.[88][89][90][91] The album received a harsh reaction upon its release,[92][93] with critics commenting on Montag's vocals as well as the album's lyrical content.[94][95] Superficial sold just over 1,000 copies in its first week of release, and was deemed a commercial failure by the media.[96][97] Montag, who had been absent throughout the album's release period, revealed that same month that she had underwent ten cosmetic procedures in a single day the previous November.[98][99][100] The news received a high amount of media attention, and she was criticized heavily for her decision.[101][102] Montag and Pratt officially left the cast of The Hills that May.[103]
2011-18: Career setbacks and motherhood
Having received backlash for the past three years on their behavior, Montag and Pratt began to see a decline in their careers.[104] With the media targeting the couple's financial issues and Montag's complicated relationship with her family,[105][106] interest in the couple began to die down in 2011.[107][108][109] Montag announced a number of projects she was working on in the following years, including a second studio album and a memoir, though these plans were ultimately scrapped.[110][111] It was announced that Montag had filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences in the petition.[112][113] The couple would later cancel these plans, and admitted that it had been an attempt at aiding Montag's career.[114][115][116] She and Pratt renewed their vows after their reconciliation in Carpinteria, California.[117] She made her film debut in a cameo for the Adam Sandler project Just Go with It, starring Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.[118][119] Montag's role in the film poked fun at the numerous cosmetic procedures she had done in 2010.[120] She joined the cast of the reality competition Famous Food, alongside other celebrity contestants.[121] The series, airing on VH1, gained poor ratings.[122][123]
She continued to discuss a potential second album in 2012, and released an extended play with previously released songs that June.[124][125][126] Montag and Pratt traveled to the United Kingdom in 2013 to compete on the eleventh series of Celebrity Big Brother.[127] It was reported that they had received a salary of $500,000 to appear on the show.[128] The couple competed as a singular contestant on the show,[129] and quickly found themselves in a villain role.[130][131] They left the House on Day 23 as the runner-ups.[132][133][134] The couple were seen as a polarizing figure on the show, and at one point were deemed the "most reviled" contestants in the show's history.[135] It was reported that the couple had received several death threats due to their behavior on the show.[136][137][138] The couple were featured in a Channel 5 television special that aired in the UK,[139] chronicling their lives after their controversial appearance on the series.[140]
Montag confirmed that she had underwent a breast reduction due to health complications with her original surgeries.[141] She and Pratt appeared in an E! network television special chronicling their rise to fame and subsequent decline.[142][143][144] The pair continued to make single episode appearances on television shows, none of which garnered much media attention.[145][146] She and Pratt spoke in several interviews during this time,[147] and claimed that their drama throughout their relationship had been an act.[148][149] Montag and Pratt were confirmed to be joining the cast of the nineteenth series of Celebrity Big Brother.[150][151] The couple's salary for this season was reported to be $750,000, significantly higher than the usual amount given to contestants.[152] Montag and Pratt were evicted from the House by the viewers on Day 25, having survived two public votes before their eventual departure.[153][154][155] Montag confirmed that April that she was pregnant with the couple's first child after a month of trying.[156][157] She gave birth to their son, Gunner Stone Pratt, on October 1, 2017.[158][159][160]
2019-present: Return to MTV
It was announced in 2018 that The Hills was being revamped with a new series.[161][162] Montag and Pratt were among the returning cast members from the original series, which would chronicle their personal and professional lives.[163][164][165] Unlike with the original series, it was confirmed that the revamp would not be scripted in any form.[166][167][168] With the new title of The Hills: New Beginnings, the series premiered on MTV in June of 2019 to strong ratings.[169][170] Montag and Pratt are set to return to the show for the second season, slated to air in 2021.[171] Heidi made her return to music with the release of the song "Glitter and Glory", a pop song with religious themes.[172][173]
Public image
Soon after her rise to fame, Montag developed a reputation as a villain due to her falling out with Lauren Conrad.[174][175][176] She and Pratt would go on to embrace this label, a tactic which kept them tabloid fixtures for several years.[177] Montag has admitted on several occasions to staging paparazzi shots for attention, a popular trend in the late 2000s.[178][179] The couple was subjected to a significant amount of backlash from the media from 2008 to 2010,[180][181][182] and were at one point described as "everything that's wrong with America".[183][184] Heidi was criticized during this period for her fashion line,[185] music career,[186][187] and her relationship with Pratt.[188] She was included on a list of the "worst celebrity singers" made by Forbes.[189] The pair had a notable feud with Al Roker, beginning after he informed Montag and Pratt of their public image.[190][191] In 2010, they were listed as the second worst television stars by ABC News.[192] In 2013, she and Pratt were labeled the "most hated couple in television" after their time in the United Kingdom.[193] Despite their criticisms, the couple have been met with a more positive reception in later years.[194]
