On 1 October 2024, two gunmen, reportedly members of Hamas, carried out an attack in Jaffa, Israel. Seven civilians were killed, and seventeen others were injured.[4][5][6]

Attack

At approximately 7:00 PM, two men armed with firearms and knives opened fire on pedestrians near the Gush Dan Light Rail's Erlich Station in Jaffa, injuring several civilians.[7][8] The Israeli emergency response service, MDA, reported that they had received reports of people injured by gunfire at 7:01 pm.[9]

According to initial reports, there were three locations involved in the attack; Jerusalem Boulevard, Yefet Street, and Gaza Street.[citation needed] A preliminary investigation revealed that the two militants disembarked from the light rail on the Jerusalem Boulevard, drew firearms, and began shooting randomly.[10]

A passerby and a security guard both returned fire and killed the gunmen shortly after the attack began.[11][12]The passerby was reported to be Israeli Army reservist Lev Kreitman, who had recently returned from a 6 month deployment to Gaza and had survived the October 7, 2023 Nova music festival massacre.[13] Kreitman confronted the shooters and engaged them with his personal handgun.[14]

Casualties

Seven people were killed and seventeen others were wounded in the attack.[15] Among the dead were a citizen of Greece, another from Georgia[16] and another of Moldova.[17] Injured victims were taken to the Edith Wolfson Medical Center in Holon and the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv.[18]

Perpetrators

The gunmen were not immediately identified by authorities. Reports from Israel authorities have deemed both gunmen as terrorists. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that they were Palestinians from the occupied West Bank city of Hebron.[9] No group claimed responsibility.[19]

Response

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the scene of the shooting and made claims that a nearby mosque may have members that participated in the engagement, and stated that he would close and destroy the mosque if it was deemed true. Bezalel Smotrich indicated that he would demand at the cabinet meeting that day that family members of the gunmen would be deported to Gaza and their homes destroyed.[11] Ben-Gvir referenced the Iranian strikes against Israel, stating that he would demand at the cabinet meeting that there was no more time for diplomacy and containment but moving forward the policy should be crushing the militants.[7]
