Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial English Medium High School Popularly known as "Ayathan School" is a high school located at Chinthavalap, Jail road in the heart of the city of Kozhikode, Kerala. The school was established in memory of Ayyathan Gopalan, a leader of the Kerala reformation movement. Ayathan School is the only remaining school in Kerala which is run under the patronage of Calicut Brahmosamaj and in its premises.
History
[edit]In 1898, Ayyathan Gopalan established the first branch of Brahmo Samaj at Chinthavalap, Jail road, Calicut (now Kozhikode), as part of his reforms. The school was registered under a trust called "The Calicut Brahmosamaj Trust, Malabar". This trust included all his children, grand children, great grand children and also his followers. In the 1950s and 1960s, Ram Mohan Cultural Centre was set up under the Kozhikode district Brahmosamaj. A large library and a play school were run under it. Under the patronage of Brahmosamaj trust a kindergarten started in 1965 with 15 children. In 1966 it was raised as a full fledged L.P. School and named as Brahmosamaj school. Among locals, it was called "Samaj School". In 1969 U.P. School was approved and the trustees renamed it as Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial School. In 1999, it was recognized as a high school by the government. It still function in the premises of Calicut Brahmosamaj, and is the only existing school in Kerala which run under Brahmosamaj.
The first headmistress of this school was Annie Gopalan and Manager was Balagopalan who was a freedom fighter and a preceptor to the literary culture in Kozhikode.
Description
[edit]This school is situated on land owned by the Calicut Brahmosamaj Trust at 73 cents in Chinthavalap, Kozhikode. It is located near the district jail (Kasaba) and Palayam opposite to Aswini diagnostic services and Kalyan Kendra. 25 teaching staff and 7 non teaching staff work here. The Calicut Brahmosamaj trust manages the school's day to day activities. "Love & Serve" is the motto of this school and logo bears the image of Ayyathan Gopalan.
