Don’t Look is a British horror short film currently in post-production, directed by and starring actor Danny Murphy, who also plays a leading role in the film. Written by up-and-coming Gen-Z screenwriter Jovita Bodamer-Mac Gregor, with script editing provided by Bea Webster, the film follows a group of friends who play a game called “Don’t Look,” where opening their eyes summons deadly spirits. What starts as a thrilling challenge soon escalates into a terrifying ordeal as the friends must confront supernatural forces and their worst fears to survive. The cast includes Murphy alongside Olly Rhodes, Laura MacDougall, Morgan Colquhoun, and Liam Robertson.
The filmmakers plan to submit the film to various film festivals and explore distribution opportunities once post-production is complete.
Premise
[edit]Don’t Look is based on an original concept by Danny Murphy, who initially envisioned the story as a feature film but opted to create a short film first to explore its potential. The narrative features a diverse cast, including Morgan Colquhoun, a 24-year-old deaf actor, portraying Abbie, a hearing character. Danny Murphy, a 20-year-old experienced actor, plays Harris. The film incorporates English, Scottish, and British Sign Language (BSL), integrating sign language alongside spoken dialogue to enhance the storytelling. Additionally, the production features a mixed crew of both deaf and hearing individuals, emphasising an inclusive approach both in front of and behind the camera.
Synopsis
[edit]A group of young friends—Thomas, Rowan, Harris, and Abbie—arrive at an abandoned Victorian house for a night of drinking and adventure. As they explore, they meet a mysterious blind man who challenges them to a strange ritual. He warns them not to open their eyes after three knocks, as an unseen entity will appear. The group reluctantly agrees, closing their eyes and relying on their senses of touch and hearing to navigate the terrifying unknown. However, Harris, being deaf, can’t hear the entity’s movements and the escalating danger around him. As the others feel the entity’s presence and try to resist its pull, they realise that opening their eyes will lead to death—one by one, they are forced to face the horrifying consequences.
