Sierra Leonean awards, including the Order of the Rokel, do not have post-nominal titles and, while there are no official abbreviations, the most common used unofficially are GCOR (Grand Commander), COR (Commander), GOOR (Grand Officer), OOR (Officer) and MOR (Member).

History

[edit]

The Order was founded in 1972 by then-President of Sierra Leone, Siaka Stevens, who created the order with the aim of honoring Sierra Leoneans or foreign nationals for distinguished service to the country.[3] It is named after the Rokel River, the largest river in Sierra Leone.[4]

A ceremony to present insignia is undertaken annually by the President of Sierra Leone on Independence Day, 27 April.[5][1]
