Extra info on Chinese wikipedia

[edit]

It looks like there's some info on his early life, speaking and law career on Chinese wiki. Could someone who is able to read Chinese integrate it into this article to give it the best chance of passing GA? @Mariogoods:? @King of Hearts:? --Spacepine (talk) 07:08, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Done, using a mix of western sources and google translate. --Spacepine (talk) 22:17, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If used,
I will be taking up the review  Reviewing... DTM (talk) 10:29, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Spacepine, the article meets basic DYK requirements, and as per its Good Article status, seems reliably sourced and aptly structured. However I have some comments related to the hooks and the meaning that they convey:
  • ALT0: Someone who does not know that Chen Qiushi is Chinese, can misinterpret the hook, especially if they don't actually click on the article. Here, nationality and where the person is located when he went missing matters. Otherwise it is vague. Maybe simply consider adding "Chinese" to the hooks (like China is at least mentioned in ALT2). Given the circumstance this reads more as a news headline.
  • ALT1: Same problems as stated for ALT0. The addition of his followers on YouTube does not help at all.
  • ALT2: This is the clearest hook of course and the one that I find most suitable of the three. Though it does read more as a news headline and is just about borderline NOT misleading.
Please note, these are just comments, I am not cutting out any of the hooks, but I would like to ask if the nominator would consider other hooks than those related to his disappearance, especially if there are any interesting ones? DTM (talk) 11:44, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I prefer hooks that are short, don't explain everything, whilst still being accurate. Surely the point is to inspire people to click on it! The first hook makes me want to find out more, the third does not. Does ALT3 help? If I've misinterpreted Wikipedia:DYKHOOK let me know. --Spacepine (talk) 21:47, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • ALT3 does not help really. Merely a single word has been interchanged - "after" and "while" - which doesn't do much to the overall meaning.
  • Also, you have not addressed this line - "I would like to ask if the nominator would consider other hooks than those related to his disappearance".
  • I had doubts related to Criteria 4a of Wikipedia:DYKHOOK. Also, as per WP:DYKNOT - "A means of advertising, or of promoting [...] political causes. While it is fine to cover topics of commercial or political interest, DYK must not provide inappropriate advantage for such causes (e.g. during election campaigns or product launches)." This matter of his disappearance is still going on, and while it is a human rights issue it has become a political one too. And yes, although the hook is supposed to make the reader curious, the curiosity seems to be going in a different direction according to me. It is written in the lead "The Chinese government reportedly informed Chen's family and friends that he has been detained for the purpose of COVID-19 quarantine." - This isn't that interesting. This brings me to the last point, I had a problem related to how interesting the hooks were. But weighing everything out, everything seems ok.
  • GTG. Hooks in order of preference ALT0/ALT3, ALT1 and then ALT2. DTM (talk) 03:31, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reappearance?

[edit]

If he has reappeared as the article states, why does the Twitter https://twitter.com/chenqiushi404 still say he's missing as of 17 hours ago from this post? "We are still waiting for Chen Qiushi's return. Until he reappears, we will keep on counting the days. Chen Qiushi has been out of contact for 246 days after covering coronavirus in Wuhan. Please save him!!!" 50.125.87.140 (talk) 08:26, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Who's updating the twitter? is it run by someone who would know where he is or just a fan of his work? as in, does it mean he is a missing person who his family haven't seen or a retired journalist who's no longer publicly publishing? Irtapil (talk) 13:27, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

By which i mean, we should cover those two concepts separately, and not conflate them. Irtapil (talk) 13:32, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

how long was he missing?

[edit]

At first glance this makes it look like he was missing for seven months. But from reading the text that seems highly likely to be an over estimate based public knowledge. It possibly only a couple of days or weeks of that would be "missing" to his friends and family, while the rest of the time would be better described as "stopped reporting" (there are other ways to phrase that but that's the most neutral i could think of). Irtapil (talk) 11:19, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The BBC source cited [1] confirms that "The whereabouts of Chen Qiushi have not been known" despite widespread interest until September 2020. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 04:00, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rolf h nelson: But known by who? (the passive voice should be banned in every journalist's style guide) Irtapil (talk) 03:39, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We report the same facts the sources report. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 01:35, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Update - can someone translate further detail please

[edit]

I added a quick update and one English language source. There's further details and two Chinese language sources on Chinese Wikipedia zh:陈秋实 (律师)

The machine translation looks quite coherent, but i think this is really a job for someone who can read Chinese, i definitely can't.

"On March 29, 2021, Xu Xiaodong updated his video recorded on March 20 on YouTube [18] . Chen Qiushi was taken from Wuhan to Tianjin at the beginning, and then went to Qingdao after being investigated. Now Chen Qiushi is still in Qingdao, under the care of his parents (his mother has been at home full-time since 2020, and his father has been re- employed , but is currently staying with pay). He has recovered his mental state, is in good health, and has begun to have a certain degree of personal freedom. Activities in a certain area around the place of residence, medical treatment, and viewing of domestic and foreign news and other information, but due to the "protection of the relevant departments" can not communicate with the outside world normally. Compared with Tianjin, Qingdao takes care of Chen Qiushi, guarantees food, clothing, and daily life, and takes care of his health. Chen Qiushi has not received any written allegations. At the same time, Xu Xiaodong guessed that "Chen Qiushi's lawyer's license can be retained and he can return to public view in September and October . " [19]"
