Talent

[edit]

"In general, Lekeu is regarded as a highly talented composer who died far too young" may be an overgeneralization. For example, William S Newman (The Sonata Since Beethoven, p 544-5) was tempted "to ask whether even the 'much promise' does not need re-evaluation", and remarked that "the more curious harmonies and irregular textures ... do not sound like gropings toward new styles but like the unlearned crudities of an average student who got a late start". Lekeu's 1890 piano trio goes on for just under an hour, very slowly, with much repetition, and it's hard to avoid the conclusion that he really didn't have much to say. The movements are marked I. Lent (15'); II. Très lent (19'); III. Très animé (8'30"); IV. Lent (13'40"). The piece is not at all a dirge, such as Shostakovich's 15th quartet which is filled with elegiac adagios; Lekeu's melodies have no sense of mournfulness or regret. It's just very slow, very long, and very repetitious. Much the same could be said of his other compositions - in general Lekeu had little to say, and took an extraordinarily long time to say it. List of compositions

[edit]

Now greatly expanded. All extant completed compositions now listed, plus several unfinished, sketched, and lost works though not nearly all. There are about a hundred more sketched works not listed here, in several sketchbooks (each book with a V number) as well as a large list of individual sketched compositions under V.118. Everything recorded on the Ricercar CD box set (reissue) is listed, and most everything unfinished/lost/planned mentioned by Lekeu in his letters is also listed here (see the new CD booklet). Added V numbers to everything, corrected/added all dates, expanded title names. saguaro-sun/chuckstreet (talk) 07:55, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Complete list of compositions moved to separate page. Only selected works listed on this page now (as twas 4 years ago before I tried to "complete" it)... selected for "significance", IMHO. saguaro-sun/chuckstreet (talk) 03:45, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NEED FOR REWRITE

[edit]

The entire section Musical Style And Influences needs to be rewritten to eliminate redundancy, contradiction, and inaccuracies. Anyone want to have a go at it? The present form is a result of several different contributors each writing a different paragraph at a different time. saguaro-sun/chuckstreet (talk) 03:34, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
