[edit]I agree that the article is in need of a rewrite and think that it has to much to do with Jazz than the actual period of time! I'm going to try and organize it to reflect more of the jazz age period rather than just jazz. Hreynolds16 (talk) 03:56, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
Please don't revert. The Jazz Age had much to do with Jazz, but the two are not synonymous. Of course, if there were a pre-existing article to which this one could be redirected to/merged with, that's a different story. Thanks. ~ Dpr 07:02, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The Jazz Age was also considered the "American High" in context to an era where things were looking better than the pre-Depression time of the Roaring 20s. Piecraft 15:16, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
THE GAME
This article is badly in need of being rewritten. There is incorrect information, vandalism, and no sense of organization. In fact there is barely anything on the Jazz Age itself, and yet the only subsection is devoted to homosexuality. For example, there is not a single mention of the flappers, Harlem Renaissance, etc. I would take it up myself, but am quite busy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.105.76.107 (talk) 04:06, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Decline in values?
[edit]This article says there was a decline in values. Since 'values' are always kind of a disputed subject, couldn't we say that there was a change in values from the previous era? Redtitan 02:56, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Fitzgerald
[edit]Huge error here. The Great Gatsby wasn't published in 1920 as it appears in the article, it was 1925. Futhermore, it wasn't his first novel. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 172.209.147.195 (talk) 19:21, 2 May 2007 (UTC).

make no sense
[edit]You people make no sense. I am reading the "The Great Gatsby" now. And it wasn't his novel you dim wits. If any of you had any common sense to read the decation page, it would say "once again for Zelda", his girlfriend, therefore there was a book before that. You people shouldn't even be on Wikipedia if you can't read. Signeddarkness 19:17, 28 October 2007 (UTC)signeddarkness

Merge with Roaring Twenties?
[edit]Since the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties are essentially synonyms and both of these pages contain nearly identical information, would it be a good idea to merge the two together? I imagine this would likely be the page merged into the other one, since it is of far lower quality than the Roaring Twenties page. Sillybear25 (talk) 02:26, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- The Jazz Age subsumes the Roaring Twenties and spans roughly the late-1910s to mid-1930s. -- Flask (talk) 08:16, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
Complaint
[edit]I wish people wouldn't post random things like "u guys suck" and "i agree" because this is an information site, not a mean comment and cyber bullying site. Please refrain from doing that. I would really appreciate you stopping that. Thank you to all of you people who have contributed wonderful information to the Wikipedia pages!

Not Amateurs
[edit]The following line in the introduction seems a little odd: "In addition, many amateur artists began to aspire including Duke Ellington, Picasso, etc." I am changing it, since the two artists not mentioned are definitely not amateurs, nor is it clear to what they might aspire.Artemis-Arethusa (talk) 18:28, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
The origin of the expression
[edit]I read the comments about Fitzgerald, not all necessarily put in a very polite way, but I wonder why the article did not mention the fact that the expression "Jazz Age" is commonly regarded as being invented by Fitzgerald himself. 77.199.86.103 (talk) 20:12, 24 May 2013 (UTC) Mike
- The phrase "jazz age" is indeed commonly regarded as being invented by Fitzgerald himself, and there must be thousands of authorities that could be cited to support that claim, though none is in the present lede. Nevertheless the OED now shows that there was a 1920 usage before Fitzgerald's 1922 one (http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/100938?redirectedFrom=jazz+age#eid40333412). I'm therefore removing the statement that it was Fitzgerald's coinage. --Antiquary (talk) 10:47, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Familiarity?
[edit]"People who were not familiar with Jazz music could not recognize it by the way Africans Americans wrote it." I just don't quite understand what this line really means. Is it to suggest that people not familiar with what the concept of Jazz was didn't understand what they were listening to because the artists were black? It doesn't make sense to me. Or is this just poor phrasing that meant to convey that African Americans developed a music style that seemed very unfarmiliar to the white audience? I think it ought be reworded for clarity. But I'm not sure about the author's original intent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.148.76.162 (talk) 23:37, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
Comprehensive Edit
[edit]Hey guys, just a heads up -- I'm going to be comprehensively editing this article for the next few weeks as part of an undergraduate technical editing course. These edits will primarily consist of structural changes, but I'm also focused on content clarity and style. Haydenstephens (talk) 20:17, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
- Please do not delete major sections without discussion on this talk page. That is close to vandalism. thearticle is about the "Jazz Age" a term used by cultural historians and they typically include coverage of such issues as rapid spread via radio, and appeal to special groups like women. Here's some items to start help your research into reliable sources: 1) https://networks.h-net.org/node/14542/reviews/14884/bumb-doerksen-american-babel-rogue-radio-broadcasters-jazz-age 2) Tim Snelson, "‘They’ll Be Dancing in the Aisles!’: Youth audiences, cinema exhibition and the mid-1930s swing boom." Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television 37.3 (2017): 455-474. 3) Rusty Hassan, "Jazz Radio in Washington: A Personal Retrospective." Washington History 26 (2014): 74-87. 4) William Barlow, "Black music on radio during the jazz age." African American Review 29.2 (1995): 325-328. good luck. Rjensen (talk) 21:08, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for the suggested reading! It has certainly come in handy thus far. A few things I've noticed about the article: it doesn't mention anything about Scott Fitzgerald's coinage of the term, and it could benefit from reorganization, especially within the "How the Jazz Age began" section. I've made some edits on my sandbox, which can be accessed via my user page. Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Haydenstephens (talk) 01:42, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Editing Project
[edit]Hello everyone! I will also be working on this article as part of my undergraduate technical editing course. Right now, I've only made a few small changes to this article (mostly fixing some typos and links), but I'm working on some suggestions for organizational restructuring. I'll post all of my ideas to my sandbox beforehand, so there will be time to discuss my suggestions. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss possible edits. Srob21 (talk) 18:37, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
- After looking at the article, I've come up with a few ideas that I am planning on implementing within the next couple of days, but I wanted to post them here to give everyone a chance to discuss them. First, I noticed that the Jazz Age section in the Jazz article is not cohesive with this article. To make it more so, I am planning on:
- copying information about Swing in the 1930s to this article, and putting it in the History section.
- copying information about Beginnings of European Jazz to a new Elements and Influences section (more on this section to follow)
I would also like to modify/add the following sections:
- Elements and Influences section to house the Youth, Role of women, a new African American influence section, and a new Beginnings of European Jazz section (mock up can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Srob21/sandbox_jazzage)
- "Criticisms of the movement" section to house general information about criticism of jazz and the Classical music section (mock up can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Srob21/sandbox_jazzage)
I would appreciate your thoughts on these changes. Srob21 (talk) 19:33, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
- What are your sources?
Vmavanti (talk) 19:43, 1 March 2019 (UTC)- I'm actually not planning on adding any new material, just moving and copying information from one place to another. So I'll be maintaining the original sources in the two articles (this Jazz Age article and the main Jazz article) Srob21 (talk) 19:11, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

Suggestions for Improvement
[edit]Here are some of my suggestions for improvement to this article. Most of these suggestions I did not implement because I felt it was important that the community of interested parties reach a consensus.
- I transferred information from the Jazz Age section of the Jazz Wikipedia article to this article to make the two more cohesive (the reasoning being that many reader of this article would be directed here from the Jazz article). One section I could not find a place for is the Influence of Duke Ellington. I would appreciate any feedback you have on this integration.
- I would like to hear your thoughts on the placement of the Fitzgerald's coining the term "Jazz Age" in the lead section. I feel like it should be moved to somewhere in the body, but I am struggling with deciding where.
Srob21 (talk) 03:07, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Criticism of the movement
[edit]I believe a more accurate title for the section would be "Moral concerns". The examples offered up are more like a moral panic than a cultural critique. 2600:8801:7116:4400:F070:5C00:226F:B6F4 (talk) 22:55, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
