Last Name
[edit]His last name does NOT rhyme with "Lizard", it's prounounced in the anglicized French way (but anglicized because the final "d" is spoken). He clarified this himself in his audiobooks.

- Thanks. You can change it yourself if you like, or I can do it. DenisMoskowitz 14:37, 2005 Jun 13 (UTC)
- "My last name is pronounced 'Grizz-ARD', a proud French name, it means 'wild stallion'. Some people have the audacity to pronounce it 'GRIZZ-erd'. That is French for 'sissy welfare recipient'." (from memory, his own discussion of the pronunciation of his name). Eauhomme (talk) 15:44, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
Grizzard's characters
[edit]Were Lewis' characters (i.e. Weyman C. Wannamaker Jr., Cordie Mae Poovey, Kathy Sue Loudermilk) actually based on real people that he knew or may have known, or were they purely creations for the benefit of humorous narrative? I'm not 100% sure. --DXI 20:22, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
- Grizzard's characters - Wannamaker, Poovey, Loudermilk, etc. - were a combination of what you mentioned. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cr526 (talk • contribs) 04:31, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, that's what brought me to this talk page. I would love to see someone put together somewhere online a cast of characters for the people mentioned in his narratives, from the real people (his grandfather Bun Word, his mother, etc., to the ones we're not sure about ("Goat" Rainwater and family, the aforementioned Wannamaker, Poovey, and Loudermilk), to the ones listed in his jokes (Bubba & Earl, Little Joey). Place of birth
[edit]Two published sources give his place of birth as Columbus, Georgia, so I changed the reference to his having been born at the adjacent army base, Fort Benning. Zariane (talk) 11:41, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Grizzard photo
[edit]The picture on the Wikipedia page is NOT Lewis Grizzard. It's a photo of actor Bill Oberst, who does a tribute show to the late journalist. 2600:1005:B189:F5EC:28F4:310:85B:58AE (talk) 18:44, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
