Ramsey Hall

[edit]

Magdalene College, Cambridge has a hall called "Ramsey Hall". Does anybody know if it was named in honour of Michale Ramsey?

Author Roald Dahl's comments

[edit]

Roald Dahl, an alumni of Repton School when the Archbishop was the Headmaster there comments on the Archbishop and says he used to be very severe with his caning of schoolboys. In effect the students having to wipe blood of their behinds before wearing their trousers again. Dahl comments on this in his book called "Boy: Tales of Childhood" A quotation from page 146 of the Puffin edition says " He was an ordinary clergyman at that time as well as being Headmaster, and I would sit in the dim light of the school chapel and listen to him preaching about the Lamb of God and about Mercy and Forgiveness and all the rest of it and my young mind would get totally confused. I knew very well that only the night before the preacher had shown neither Forgiveness nor Mercy in flogging some small boy who had broken the rules ". Haphar 08:43, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the page on Ramsay's predecessor, Geoffrey Fisher. To quote, "A question that has continued to raise much interest is the allegation that Fisher, while Headmaster of Repton, was cruel in his use of corporal punishment. This charge derives especially from the memoirs of Roald Dahl, who was at Repton, in which he recounted a sadistic flogging (of a friend of Dahl's), with long pauses between blows and other psychological cruelties. However, a later biography of Dahl established that Dahl's memory was at fault, in that the flogging he described took place under Fisher's successor. As far as Dahl's biographer could establish, Fisher's conduct was unremarkable, though probably on the strict side of normal, for his time." 202.138.16.16 10:54, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What should one read?

[edit]

Personally, I find Ramsey's combination of chatholicity and liberalism, including openness to other faithes and atheists, interesting. Which of his books might serve best to understand better his views on this field?--128.176.125.7 (talk) 12:22, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Politics section - Problem with Lord Hugh Cecil statement

[edit]

I think there is something wrong with the statement "on his return, he heard a Liberal Party leader, Lord Hugh Cecil remark that the Church was the place to go for those who wanted to help people, and Ramsey heard that as his vocation from God". Lord Hugh Cecil was never a member of the Liberal Party, but a prominent Conservative and could certainly not be described as a party leader (although his father, Lord Salisbury, and his cousin, Arthur Balfour, had been Prime Ministers and leaders of the Conservative Party). Cecil was a prominent Anglican, so this might well be a remark of his, and I wonder if Lord Cecil is being mixed up with his contemporaneity Lord Crewe who was a Liberal leader in the House of Lords?
