Why the Modern Greek transliteration?

[edit]

This would seem to come from πρωταθλητής, with a Romanisation protathlitis based on the Modern Greek pronunciation. However, the standard Romanisation of such a name would be based on the Ancient Greek pronunciation: protathletes. The word isn't attested in Ancient Greek, but it is a possible Ancient Greek word, and scientific Greek names are based on Ancient Greek, not Modern Greek anyway. Is knowledge of Classical languages in such utter decay among paleontologists today? Or did the author want to please some Greek nationalist friends who refuse to accept that Ancient Greek has ever sounded like anything else than Modern Greek? 62.73.72.3 (talk) 20:41, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
