I don't understand the fourth paragraph of the article as it stands at present:

"This series was generally made on location, and recorded entirely on film by Thames' subsidiary, Euston Films (perhaps best known for dramas such as The Sweeney and Minder), giving the programmes a consistently gritty feel. Like the earlier series, this series was recorded on 2" Ampex quadruplex videotape, with location shooting done on 16mm film."

Was it recorded "entirely on film" or both on videotape and film? jamesgibbon 20:16, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Series 1-2 (1972-3): Interiors shot at Teddington Studios on VT, locations in Amsterdam on 16mm. Series 3 (1977): Euston Films production entirely on location (mostly Netherlands but one episode set in London) on 16mm. And despite what it says, I'm pretty sure the whole of Series 4 (1992) was also shot on film, although it may hacve been edited on 1" videotape. Lee M (talk) 18:14, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

.. I do think by the way that there's possibly too much emphasis on the recording medium, rather than the themes, writing, performances and so on .. but it's probably better to shift the balance by adding more about the latter elements than by removing information about the former. jamesgibbon 20:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article about the novels?

[edit]

How come there's only an article about the TV series, rather than the novels? It might be better to combine these into an article about the character, and discuss both media.Gymnophoria (talk) 12:56, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gymnophoria, it would be good idea to create an article about the novels, if they are sufficiently notable. (I disagree that this article would be merged with it though.) It would probably take someone who has read the novels to create such an article, and most editors editing this article have probably only seen the TV production(s). Also, there already exists this material on Wikipedia, so perhaps an entire article on the novels is not necessary, since the adaptations seem more notable than the novels. This article needs to be split into the two separate series

[edit]

This article needs to be split into two: One article for the original series and one article for the completely different reboot with a completely different and far younger cast and far different storylines. Softlavender (talk) 01:45, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. At this time I've been concentrating on shaping the article into a coherent format that makes it easier for readers to follow the 'who-what-when', beefing up content, and adding reliable sources. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 12:06, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Softlavender: Thank you for tackling the split. FYI: the start date for S3 in the UK and US has not been announced. The info someone added to Rotten Tomatoes for S3 in the US is false. I don't know if it has actually premiered in Australia and if theTV Tonight article is reliable because it states "The three part series premiered internationally in January", but this is not true. Series/Season 3 premiere dates and episode air dates (2020 remake)

[edit]

Regardless of what has been added for S3 for the U.S. by using Rotten Tomatoes as the source:

  • (1) PBS/Masterpiece official website does not list episodes for Season 3;
  • (2) "Airdate: No specific premiere date has been shared for Van der Valk Season 3." – Shows Coming to MASTERPIECE in 2023 and Beyond : Van Der Valk Season 3, PBS, January 24, 2023.
  • (3) "In the UK, series 3 of Van der Valk will air on ITV in 2023, date to be announced. ...In the US, it's a PBS series. We would expect to see the new season on PBS and the PBS Masterpiece Amazon channel sometime this year (no official date has been announced at time of writing)." – Van der Valk, Season 3: What We Know Right Now, I Heart British TV, March 25, 2023.

PBS is the authority on series/season premiere date and episode air dates in the United States. If PBS has not confirmed this information, then there is a problem with what Rotten Tomatoes published. Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 01:05, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Coding is messed up in the infobox - Distributors not showing up

[edit]

The Distributor(s) are not showing up in the infobox, even though the information is there in the wikitext. There may be other items also not showing up, but I don't have time to figure it out. Can someone who understand all that infobox coding fix this issue(s)? Thank you. Softlavender (talk) 01:40, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, it has been removed from infobox. See Template:Infobox television#Deprecated parameters. Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 02:09, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Van der ValkVan der Valk (1972 TV series) – Per WP:TVNAME Additional Disambiguation: If there are multiple television shows with the same name that debuted in separate years the article name should include the year in which it premiered.

"Van der Valk" inadequately disambiguates two very different television shows. Each of the two very different TV shows need date disambiguation, per standard Wikipedia naming conventions for TV shows and films with the same title. As the new 2020 series gets more episodes, more and more links (usually from actors' articles) get created and erroneously linked to this undifferentiated article because it does not have any identifying date(s) in its title. The only way to solve this problem is to indicate in both of the article titles the date of the 1972 series and the date of the completely different 2020 series. Softlavender (talk) 08:23, 4 April 2023 (UTC); edited to add link to relevant Wikipedia naming policy for TV shows. 09:58, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Additional comment: The WP:PRIMARYTOPIC is actually the character created by Nicolas Freeling, upon which two very different TV shows have been created. Therefore, this article on the 1972–1992 TV series is not a/the primary topic. Both TV shows are subsidiary topics, and both need disambiguation with dates. Softlavender (talk) 08:29, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - the character might or might not be primary overall, but given that there is no article for that, it's moot at this point. Re the 2020 series, that's pure WP:RECENTISM. The previous show ran for 20 years and is something of a classic, so is a fairly obvious primary per long-term significance.  — Amakuru (talk) 09:00, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. Three years ago and dozens/hundreds of RS news articles and acclaim over those three years is not WP:RECENTISM. And unless we disambiguate this title, someone will have to regularly check for new links to this page, nearly all of which will be erroneous (refering to the new series) and have to be moved. I spent all day yesterday disambiguating more than 300 links to this article. The old show had 5 seasons, and the new show has already had 3 seasons. The old show did not run for "20 years", it ran from 1972–1973, 1977, and 1991–1992. There is no reason not to properly disambiguate it. This is the case with nearly every screen item with the same name, no matter how "classic" one iteration may seem; see for instance Hawaii Five-O (1968 TV series) and Born Yesterday. By the way, I found the relevant naming guideline, which is WP:TVNAME Additional Disambiguation, and I will add that to my move rationale above. -- Softlavender (talk) 09:54, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The 1972 series is the clear primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:09, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"Primary topic" is not used in dismbiguating television shows (unless the reboot flops or only has one season). The correct naming guideline is WP:TVNAME Additional Disambiguation, which states: "If there are multiple television shows with the same name that debuted in separate years the article name should include the year in which it premiered." Example: Hawaii Five-O (1968 TV series) and Hawaii Five-0 (2010 TV series). -- Softlavender (talk) 00:20, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Local consensus never overrules WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. However, you also seem to be ignoring the second sentence of the naming convention you are citing: In particular, if the title of a television program is sufficiently unambiguous compared to any other topics or is considered to be the primary topic, then let that also be the title of the article; for example, The Prisoner or Guiding Light. There is, in fact, no conflict whatsoever between the two. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:12, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"Prefix the year of release or program debut – (1997 TV series). Generally used when there are shows with the same title within the same country." Both the original and the remake are British series from ITV. Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 10:35, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You don't seem to get that this does not override WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and it even says this in the naming convention. An example given for a primary topic, for instance, is The Prisoner. But there is also The Prisoner (2009 miniseries). By your reasoning, the original should be entitled The Prisoner (1967 TV series). It isn't, because it's the primary topic! -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:08, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. WP:NCTVUK is the rule here. In case it's unknown or forgotten by some editors: "Van der Valk" is the character in 13 thriller novels by Nicola Freeling. The first novel, published in 1962, is titled
Van der Valk-Love in Amsterdam: A Novel
https://www.amazon.com/Van-Valk-Love-Amsterdam-Novel-Mistery/dp/1335284818
The Freeling biography highlights the Van der Valk series. What if someone creates an article in the future about the Van der Valk novels? Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 08:34, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And, as stated above, WP:NCTVUK allows for a primary topic. Not sure why some editors don't think it does. I think the TV series has trumped the books as primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:14, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
