Wrong flag?

[edit]
The Flag of the Antarctic Treaty.
The previous unofficial flag.

According to article Flags of Antarctica, the official flag is File:Flag of the Antarctic Treaty.svg since 2002, while File:Proposed flag of Antarctica (Graham Bartram).svg is a previous proposed design called the Bartram flag.

I suggest the following changes to the flag data template:

  • change the main flag with the official flag
  • make the Bartram flag a variant, called for instance bartram or proposed

Can a template editor or administrator kindly update the template? Place Clichy (talk) 09:17, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. (At minimum, have a discussion, and show that no one objects.) StevenJ81 (talk) 15:57, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is precisely why I opened this discussion on this template talk page. I'll add the {{edit template-protected}} template again in about a week if nobody objects. Place Clichy (talk) 08:20, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request to add in another flag variant as mentioned on the flag article (that of the proposal by Townsend, which has currently been the only flag formally recognized by members of the Antarctic Treaty System, or to have this flag replace the one by Smith as the "alt" variant). As Antarctica has no official flag, I also propose (provided there are no objections, as stated above) that the default be changed to that used by the Antarctic Treaty System, and move Graham Bartram's proposed design to be another alternate.  Not done for now: Since this template is mostly used in other templates such as Template:Flagdeco it would not be possible to just add another variant here that you could use with these other templates. With there being 1600 transclusions of this template. I do not think that the flags should just be changed without consensus. Terasail[✉️] 20:06, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've returned after obtaining a consensus from several editors regarding the above which have made numerous edits over on the Flag of Antarctica article on its talk page. The following proposals were agreed to:

  • Changing the main flag under Country data Antarctica from Bartram's flag to the "True South" flag per its status as more officially recognized
  • Removing Whitney Smith's design as "alt" variant due to lack of use
  • Using the flag of the Antarctic Treaty System as another variant with the identifier "ats"

The following proposals have been determined to require more discussion (two users agree to changes, one disagree/more discussion needed) due to lack of official recognition by organisations or parties to the Antarctic Treaty System:

  • Instating Bartram's flag as "alt" variant due to its representation as the main Antarctica flag emoji in several operating systems.

Done – Bartram's flag is included as an alt variant pending consensus. Let me know if it should be removed. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 06:59, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's way too early to change to the True South flag. The sourcing for it on the Flag of Antarctica page is poor (currently including Facebook links and the True South flag's own website, etc). Bartram's flag is still by far the closest thing there is to an ""official"" flag of Antarctica. I'm not even sure if the True South flag is used enough to deserve to be an alt variant, much less the main version displayed to all readers. The Bartram one should be reinstated. There was far too little discussion at Talk:Flag of Antarctica about this to say there was a consensus for this.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 08:01, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There is an RFC about this flag template at Talk:Flag of Antarctica#RFC on main flag used in the country data template. Please participate in the discussion there if interested. Adumbrativus (talk) 06:55, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Update: The RFC has been closed, with the result being "Consensus was the added third option to not use any flag icon on the template. The main reasoning for no icon is that there is no official flag for Antartica." The True South flag can be moved to being a variant under that name, while File:Blank flag.svg is inserted in the main field as a placeholder. Bartram variant name can be changed to "Bartram" or "emoji". HapHaxion (talk / contribs) 14:28, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is there by chance a way to automatically replace or modify instances of this template in mainspace per the "avoid using flag icon templates for Antarctica entirely" consensus? I'm glad that the flag template was blanked per the discussion, but I think it'd also look better to replace instances of  Antarctica with a simple Antarctica link wherever possible. Unless there's a way to have this template be borderless by default, that could work too.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 19:48, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Vanilla Wizard: it appears that an empty |border= parameter erases the border. Let us know if there are more concerns. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 18:27, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That looks perfect, thank you!  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 20:46, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
