Eh?

[edit]

I tried to do what Ed told me, but the only thing that shows up is User:The Runescape Junkie/StatusTemplate (on the page itself), or whatever's supposed to show up. I put "in" in the status part, but it wouldn't work. Help? Cheers! The RSJ - SPEAK 21:31, 12 September 2006 (UTC) (By the way, here's where it is).

AMA

[edit]

I'm ready for cases :) Computerjoe's talk 15:22, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

I took it on myself to put this on hold for now and to close this. The first is a premature request, I copied the discussion that was growing on the AMARQ page to the Talk:Keane page - I think we need to be real firm that the request page is not allowed to be a place to have an argument... I'll be happy to advocate that discussion if it comes, I left a pep talk on the talk page, and a note at the requester's talk page. The second one is a user wanting advocacy for what seems on the face of it to actually be that user's linkspam, I sent an email explaining the policies involved and I don't think they will press it. I'd be happy to act as their advocate if they do decide they want to insist on their link, as I've already done all the research. Just wanted to mention this to someone else so it doesn't seem I'm overstepping some boundary, Thanks for helping out with the AMA stuff! User:Pedant 18:17, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello, my name is Dan and I've been trying to make readable some articles of P!nk's singles: Stupid Girls, Who Knew and U + Ur Hand but there's 1 user who is editing claiming to be "the" editor and making them hard to read in some computers and for some people because he/she simply "likes" that style. Also the I'm Not Dead article, begins to use tables for the tracklist when that's not in the wikiproject. Take a look at the HISTORY pages of each article and see what are his/her excuses, I've even added chart runs and he keeps deleting those and telling me that I cut information. Compare versions and tell me what you think please. Thanks in advance.DanV 20:05, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

I am going to need an advocate

[edit]

I think I might need an advocate soon. I'm not sure how we do that... any advice? My situation is an editor making wholesale bad changes to an article that I and 3 collaborators worked for the last month on. The 'other' editor has refused discusssion, has made comments that read as if he knows best, ignored other editor's comments, and requests for discussion, and now has created an RfC, in part citing WP:OWN, while at the same time editing the policy at WP:OWN, apparently with the intent of making our dispute 'clearly fit' the policy. It's going to be kinda grim, as there is about 20-30 feet of text to read to really understand what's happening. Any advice on this would be welcome, I prefer to read it here on your page though, if you don't mind. User:Pedant 17:47, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Ok I will help you as best I can. Lets start with the article and work our way through there. I will also check the policy and make reverts if the changes are to drastic. Æon Insanity Now!EA! 17:49, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. That was quick. Are you still in the Navy? I was a bubblehead on boomers in the mid 70's, and I just noticed your Navy stuff.
The Article in question is Hippies. I want to make it clear that I'd like to de-escalate this as much as possible, and that having an advocate might be seen as escalation.
User:Viriditas has made some drastic changes, I'm not sure what he's angling at, but he seems to me to be bent on changing hippies from a sociopolitical to a purely social movement. He's moved a reference to Eisenhower's farewell address to a spot where it has no real significance, well, I'll let you research it and do the advocate thing. If you look at the article before Viriditas and compare it to the present article, that might be a good start. Feel free to tell me bluntly if you think I'm wrong and he's right, I really just need a neutral editor to look over the discussion. I archived one extensive interchange between another editor and me, when he objected to changes I made, and over the course of a week or two we came up with what we all agreed was a good lead-in to the article. We were going to go through it from top to bottom to make it a featurable article, but now we are not going to make any headway until we can get Viriditas to work collaboratively instead of barging in and ripping down the drapes. User:Pedant 18:18, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
If you would like to keep this off of your talk page as well, it could go hereUser:Pedant

Yes I'm still in the Navy and a quick read through (I will read the rest tonight) I would suggest Mediation if he is willing. I have reverted the the OWN policy back to what it was originaly. So hopefully there will be no more issues on that end. Æon Insanity Now!EA! 19:10, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Sockpuppetry

[edit]

Hello. I was wondering if you left me a message on my discussion page or if someone else did using your name and link because the typing on my discussion page looks nothing like yours. Just wanted to know because I'm being accused of being "abusive" and a "sockpuppet" and I am neither. Recently one of my summaries of a TV episode was completely deleted and I asked the user not to delete my work. I feel that this person is trying to get back as me by acting as though he/she is you. Especially since the user is accused of being the sockpuppet that he/she accuses ME of being. Thanks for your time. I appreciate whatever you have to say in this matter. Hi Aeon1006! You've signed up to be a judge for the Esperanza User Page Award! You'll have three user pages to examine. The user pages you get coincide with your signup number. So if you signed up to be a judge in spot 1 than you will get nominations 1-3. Pick your favorite one, and list it in the finalist section. After all 5 judges have chosen a finalist it's time to award them 1-10 points in the four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

Please remember to include Subpages in your judging criteria. See the Scores section on this page for additional information on your job as a judge.

Keep in mind that your scores are confidential! Email Celestianpower with your scores and final picks. As soon as all the scores have been tallied, a winner will be announced! Thanks.

Hello Yet Again Pt. 4

[edit]

Ok, I found out it was ok to deleted Anon./unsigned comments because the user tried to turn me in for 3RR on my own talk page. Anyhow, this user has a sockpuppet (I believe). Two different people with completely different IPs "vandalized" both my user page (he inserted the sockpuppet and banned codes) and then proceeded to post ridiculous comments on my talk page. When I did an IP search they both turned out to be from the same city, state, and have the same ISP. This is one of his user IDs and this is his other user ID. I have no idea why he keeps messing with me... Anyway, maybe you have a case. Maybe you don't. Thanks once more for everything. Sweet Pinkette 14:34, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Hippie

[edit]

Thanks for keeping an eye on the page. I appreciate the warning, but would also like it if you could talk with Mombas as well. He has in no uncertain terms demanded that I leave. For the sake of civility, I feel that his behavior must also be addressed. Thanks again. —Viriditas | Talk 00:36, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Just a heads-up to let you know that the attacks haven't stopped, and there's been at least two or three since Pedant was warned. I don't want to see him blocked, so if you can get through to him, I would appreciate it. At this point, I think most admins would block him, but I can appreciate his sense of humor, which does tend to lighten up a dreary talk page, so for that I thank him. If you can convince him to be civil, it might prevent an otherwise unfortunate forthcoming block. —Viriditas | Talk 06:07, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Well That Sucks

[edit]

I looked at the vandalism page and a high amount of abusers use their IPs. Wouldn't it be better if they had to register? It's also amazing how users keep abusing their priveledges and they get get a "final warning" like 15 times. Anyway, I don't know how Admins deal with it. One guy posted nonesense on my talk page 7 times and I was about to pull my hair out. ^__^ Sweet Pinkette 02:23, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

WP:ESP/UPA - Time to judge!

[edit]

Hello, Aeon1006. This is a quick message to remind you that all 5 finalists for the Esperanza User Page Award have been chosen. You now need to judge those 5 pages, awarding each one 1-10 points for attractiveness, usefulness, interesting-ness, general niceness and quality of subpages. Refer to the Scores section at the project page if you are unsure of how to score.

Once you have scored the 5 pages, email Celestianpower using the specified format. As soon as all the scores have been tallied, a winner will be announced. Thanks.

Moving userboxes per Wikipedia:Userbox migration

[edit]

I noticed that with {{User No Napoleon}} and at least with {{User:UBX/User paranoia2}} (which has by now already been deleted) you haven't really "moved" the pages. So the complete history of the templates is lost. I recommend you read the first part of Wikipedia:Userbox migration to learn how to move and redirect the userbox templates, if you haven't yet. Any templates that I find, I will tag for history merging, see Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves. You can of course help me with that because you know best what templates you have copied. --Bisco 02:47, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

I have tagged now all the userboxes on your humor ubx page where I found the original template. The work is in progress (by admins), the ubx will be (probably) temporarly deleted for the history merge. When it's finished you can see it in the edit history. --Bisco 05:33, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

format question

[edit]

Since I was exceedingly helpful in the design of the EA page (not) I wonder if you could offer me some advice? On my talk page the background is supposed to be papayawhip, and was until two or three days ago (or was it yesterday?). On my user page my vandalism edits box is supposed to have the background colour #660000. Although no changes whatsoever have been done to them (not to the code, at any rate) both tables have a white background now. I noticed on someone else's talk page that the tables I'd written also have white backgrounds.

Do you have any idea why this would be happening? The only connection between the tables is the fact that I made them, and they all started having white backgrounds at the same time. Two are HTML tables and the ones on the other user's talk page are Wiki tables. Thanks in advance...— Editor at Large(speak) 00:04, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

I noticed that it's the same on Riana's page; the section with her userbox write-up has a white background when before it was the same colour as everywhere else. It seems to be a sudden problem, where tables that were fine before are white for some reason. I thought maybe it was a bug of some sort. — Editor at Large(speak) 00:38, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Aeon & Wikiwoohoo,

[edit]

Alrighty guys, here's a rediculously crazy situation: On top of the 10 cases piling up, new people joining the organization, and other crazy stuff hitting the fan... my wife and I are expecting our new daughter to arrive any day now. :-)

As a result, I'm going to be out of full swing for a couple of weeks and I need you guys to do your best to keep the AMA afloat. The Wikiholic that I am, I know that I won't be away completely, but my appearences will be unpredictable at best. I trust you guys, as you've proven that you know how to keep cool during crunchtime, and if at any time things get too unruly to handle, send me an email and I'll see if I can drop by to help out. :-)

Wish me luck! אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 15:29, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi

[edit]

Sorry if this isn't the space for telling my case since you asked me on my talk page. Thanks for your time. I will be as short as possible. In, brief I'd wish to retire the offensive mentions on the user pages for The Mekon and Mr. Scare to Keane and Tom Chaplin. I don't care if they say the don't like the band but at least show some respect since they are people and I think is a personal attack to tell people "disabled mental" (said to people liking Keane). I think Wikipedia shouldn't let this comments to appear since is a public domain resource but I don't know if there's some policy for this cases. I hope it can be solved and thanks again--Fluence 02:02, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you a lot. If nothing can be done about Keane, I will take the only way out, ignoring it, but really thank you :)--Fluence 23:35, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Desiging Esperanza's pages

[edit]

Hey Aeon,

Since you worked so awesomely on the front page redesign for Esperanza, we wanted to ask you if you had any ideas in mind for consider having a single Esperanza-related look for all of Esperanza's pages? (Based off the proposed program Massive Page Redesign. It would be nice to have something that looked the same on all pages, and certainly something a little green, but not nearly as decorated as the front page. If you have any ideas, that would be great; you could draft something up, and then it could get shown to all of Esperanza. The idea of making all the pages look the same is a good one, but we'll want to make sure that it's something that all of Esperanza wants. I hope I made some sense, let me know if you have any questions! -- Natalya 21:03, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

to Bot or not to Bot

[edit]

I've done a little RC Patrolling recently, and it's tedious as hell doing reverts and edit summaries manually. Do you use a Bot of some sort? Would you reccomend one? At this point I have several pages on my watchlist that keep getting vandalized and I need to streamline the clean-up process. Thanks :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 20:14, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Aeon, I'll look into Vandal Proof. I ended up getting one of the pages Sprotected, and I'm considering it for a couple of others. For some reason, Helen Keller is getting vandalized on a daily basis; don't people have anything better to do? --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 17:44, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
BTW - I just requested (and received) Sprotect for Helen Keller. There may be backlogs in other areas, but the folks at Protection Requests are really on the ball! --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 20:40, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Userbox help

[edit]

Hi there. Doc Tropics suggested I ask you for some help with userboxes on my userpage. Basically I don't understand how the layout is affected. It looks OK now on my page, but if I swap the order of some of them, the layout gets blown up. I'm not sure which ones are behaving a certain way, or why. Or if there's something in the userbox code that I'm not aware of. Thanks in advance. Alcarillo 23:30, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind me sending this your way, but you are the PageMaster :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 05:32, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Great, just what you need...another project, LOL! It seems that Alcarillo has made some progress, so it's not urgent, but I'll bet you could still help with some of the finer points. Trial-and-error is a slow way to learn, especially when helpful folks like you are willing to assist. Good luck with your forum :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 20:07, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Just wanted to add that I at least know how to modify the designs to the boxes. What I don't get is why some display a certain way on the page, for instance, if I change the order of some of the userboxes. You can see what I mean here. Alcarillo 20:20, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Eureka! I figured it out. This userbox had these </td></tr> table tags in it. THAT was the troublemaker all along... Thanks for the help. Alcarillo 22:11, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Alan.ca AMA

[edit]

Hi, I would prefer to discuss the issue on your talk page. Presently I am having a dispute with user:CJCurrie. My first dispute with CJCurrie was when he reverted an edit I had made to the Russ Powers article. Subsequently, he chose not to participate in mediation and vowed to permit my edit pending him finding a source. The source never materialized, but he left the article alone. Now, this month, I was editing an unsourced article for Judy Marsales when he and I ran into another conflict. I had moved a list of awards from the main space to the talk page pending verification. Additionally, I added a statement with reference to a newspaper article about how Judy had voted against the public opinion in her riding. user:CJCurrie reverted my edits and returned the unsourced awards while removing my sourced vote information. At first he chose not to respond to me whatsoever on his talk page, but continued to revert my changes. At once he realized I had filed an informal mediation request and found support in another user he had frustrated in a similiar fashion he agreed to wait for the resolution of the mediation and created an edit version that was missing both his unsourced awards and my sourced vote details. Subsequently another user attempted to find a compromise edit of my sourced statement, but CJCurrie reverted this as well. Alan.ca 02:22, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I see I will contact cJCurrie and ask why he removed the sourced material. Also I will host the conversion here on my talk page for simplicty. Æon Insanity Now!EA! 02:25, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Damn....ok I can't be the Advocate in this one per AMA and MEDCAB Guidelines. I will continue to handle it until a new Advocate is found. Æon Insanity Now!EA! 02:31, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok the Case is now pending a new advocate. I will copy this to the new advoate when he contacts me. Æon Insanity Now!EA! 02:37, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok Seadog is taking over the case. I'm sorry to bail on you like this but it would be better fo both parties to have someone new handle this then have a piror medator do it. I will be watching the case as it is Seadogs first (not to worry he is capable).

  • Please see my comment below, I am comfortable with your advocacy despite your previous limited involvement in the MEDCAB case. Alan.ca 02:13, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

More Alan.ca

[edit]

Please forward this to the appropriate party:

Alan.ca's description of this situation is not entirely accurate.
The Russ Powers controversy involves a statement that I had previously made about David Sweet's nomination for the Conservative Party of Canada in 2004. Although not sourced (at the time), the statement in question was an accurate reflection of Canadian media consensus: that David Sweet's right-wing, fundamentalist Christian views could cause him electoral difficulties in his urbane riding. I could have found a reliable source for the assertion, but decided that it wasn't worth my time to contest the matter. This "controversy" is now dormant, and not particularly relevant to the issue at hand.
The situation with Judy Marsales is as follows: Some time ago, I wrote a short article on this Ontario politician (whose political orientation is more accurately described as "centrist" than "left-wing"). The fact that I did not provide sources is not particularly remarkable, given the period in which the article was written: most Wikipedia articles from this time were not sourced in any organized fashion. (The standards are different today, of course, and I've recently returned to many of these articles to provide proper cites.) The list of awards was taken from Marsales's official biography, and could be sourced with relative ease -- I've chosen not to contest Alan on this point because they aren't essential to the article, and were only included to provide the reader with general background information.
The material which Alan wants to add to the article is of very dubious importance, concerning the manner in which Marsales (a government backbencher) chose to vote on second reading of an opposition member's private bill. The article indicates that some members of her riding opposed her decision (as opposed to "her constituents did not publically support it"). From what I can tell, there were no follow up articles in the newspaper. There is no indication that this is a matter of any of real importance, and I the only reason I can conceive for its inclusion is to portray Marsales in a negative light. The fact that the material is sourced is, quite frankly, irrelevant.
Concerning Alan's suggestions as to my POV, I can say without fear of contradiction that he doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't particularly like Marsales, and I would not have voted for her if I had lived in her riding. I also did not violate the 3RR, and I don't believe that removing tendentious text is an way "unproductive". CJCurrie 00:28, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

I appologize for not repling sooner, I was with family during the christmas holiday and was away from a comupter. Alan, CJCurrie possions is that you are Edittin gin a tenous manner. Request for advocacy

[edit]

Dear Aeon,

I found your name on the list of advocates, and I was wondering if you be so kind as to provide me with some assistance on the wikientry I am currently working on. The entry has been put up for deletion, correctly or incorrectly, but it has been frustrating because I am new to wikipedia conventions, and am more than willing to make changes to the entry as I hope the edit history shows, but it seems as if there is a user who is determined to delete the page, without offering constructive criticism. The entry in question is Bryan Reynolds, and there is now an Afd discussion here as well. Any assistance, even suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. Again, I am more than willing to make appropriate changes (and hope that I have been continuing to do so in good faith), but it would be disapointing to have the entry deleted without a chance to make it a valuable entry for the wikipedia community. Sincerely, Gregorthebug 19:09, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi,

The word I used was "tendentious", not "tenuous". CJCurrie 01:32, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Good afternoon (GMT time); at the case page for User:Alan.ca's AMA case, you left the following comment:

"...I have to take myself off I was the Mederator for this two in a prior dispute. Conflict of Interest. This is now pending Advocate Seadog..."
:::::--Æon Insanity Now!EA! 02:34, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I volunteered to take over the case and, meeting no resistance, proceeded to begin dealing with the dispute. However, upon visiting User:CJCurrie's talk page I came across a comment that seemed to me like you were actively dealing with the case.

Therefore, I am posting this message to request information on your official status - are you dealing with the alan.ca case at this moment in time?

Have a nice day.
Cheers and regards,

Hi, welcome back. While the December AMA meeting has closed now, the topic about deputy elections is still open and I wanted to let you know that I will ask that you remain a deputy co-ordinator. Aeon, are you still representing me in the Judy Marsales matter? Alan.ca 01:41, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Marsales

[edit]

Hi Aeon, thank-you for your message on my page. For future reference, you might encourage someone who finds something I do problematic or obscure to get in touch with me, since I don't think there is any need for advocacy here. I did, I admit, do a "drive-by" sourcing for Judy Marsales, a Member of the Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Hamilton, Ontario. This sourcing can be seen more or less in this diff. I also left my opinion on the talk page about whether or not the article should include a reference to Marsales vote against a private member's bill about property taxes on the basis of on article. (You can see the description of the proposal in the last line of Tim Hudak.) In our system, private members' bills have no chance of passing, especially on matters of taxation. Voting for or against it is hardly news-worthy, much less wikipedia-worthy, and as far as I can see the bill only merits a single-line in its proposer's biography and reaction to it is found in no other MPP's article. It's clearly doesn't belong, and you should ask Alan to go find some other similar reference to a private member's votes in any other Canadian politicians' biographies. I think if he finds one in another such article, he'll see how out-of-place they seem. But most of all, I think you should encourage Alan not to resort to your advocacy until he's attempted a good one-on-one exchange with another editor. Bucketsofg 16:17, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

GO Navy!

[edit]

Hello, I was working on changing out all the US Navy enlisted rate devices and shoulder patches to a new higher res version that I created and made it down to the PO2 collar device and saw once I had updated all the articles that it linked to that it was attached to your userpage as well. Anyway since I have been making a ton of rate and rating insignia for the List of United States Navy ratings & United States Navy enlisted rate insignia pages I figured making an Aerographer's Mate Second Class shoulder patch wouldn't take but a sec. So here you go if you want to use it great if not, doesn't matter. Have a good day.--WilsBadKarma (Talk/Contribs) 11:49, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I'm one of the new members of AMA. I've looked through the backlog of new cases and I'm trying to weigh in on a couple to help out. However, one of the cases I've looked into looks VERY complicated and I'm not sure how to proceed with it. There is a lot of mutual bad stuff going on between the disputers and it's already involved in a level of dispute resolution under Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Emir Arven. I've left a message with the user raising the case, but I haven't gotten a response. Basically, I'm concerned about being an advocate for someone that appears to be engaging in a lot of the same activities as the user he is accusing. Anyway, just looking for some guidance or a pointer in the right direction. Thanks! -Cquan 19:08, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Emir Arven's case

[edit]

Hello. Tell me, should I post my long arguments there, or just point the people involved to Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Emir Arven.

Could/should Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Emir Arven be of any relevance to the process?

Regards, --PaxEquilibrium 10:02, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

I thought about posting Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Emir_Arven#Evidence_from_PaxEquilibrium to Your talk page. Would've it been wrong? (as I understood You encouraged me to post evidence?).

Also, the main point of this whole thing is this: Ivan Kricancic filed a request to Ban Emir Arven. The administrators agreed that an RfC had first to be conducted, and if the conclusion recommends ban, only then to endorse it. So far I haven't seen any developments at any of the appeals filed; is the whole case dumped? --PaxEquilibrium 22:07, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: AMA

[edit]

Nicholas I have to agree with you, we have lost sight......I have the feeling in a week or two AMA is going to fall on its sword. Is there anything that you recomend that be elimated, fixed or changed to prevent this? Æon Insanity Now! Give Back Our Membership! 21:54, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Dear Aeon: Thank you for your message. I do believe it is possible to fix the AMA in its present state, and my views on how to do so are as follows:
  • Drop the formalistic structure immediately. The AMA does itself no favours by appearing "opaque" to the rest of Wikipedia, and - I believe - wastes a huge amount of time on activities that accomplish nothing towards the goal of delivering advocate services; what this means is the AMA ends up existing merely for its own sake, rather than its stated purpose on Wikipedia. The whole business of pseudo-legal ideas, elections, vast lists of minutiae as formal "meetings", formal authority, bizarre constellations of "teams" with strange acronyms, etc. needs to be killed off rapidly. As I noted on the AMA talk page, these issues were in part the reason that Esperanza met the fate it did, and need to be got rid of not only so the system is more efficient, but also so the perception of the AMA by the rest of the Wikipedia community is no longer one of a secret clique that serves no purpose other than to provide a club for its members. Transparency is essential in any dispute resolution initative.
  • Cease being an adversary of the ArbCom. A number of arbitrators have expressed an extreme dislike of the AMA based on past dealings with advocates in arbitration cases, and indeed Raul commented on the MfD to that effect. The AMA has carried on a consistent policy of thumbing its collective noses at the arbitrators, an extremely unwise course of action that is liable to lead to the arbitrators eventually losing patience and seeing that the initiative is indeed deleted and salted for good. Often, this combative attitude towards the ArbCom has been in the name of justice and "due process" - two terms liable to raise the ire of any Wikipedian, and even more so an arbitrator - and, although I am not specifically defending the ArbCom, I have worked with many of the arbitrators for a number of years here on Wikipedia, and I consider they would not show a dislike of the AMA unless they have a good reason to do so.
  • Actually look at what is happening in the advocate cases. Further to my remarks above about the AMA getting wrapped up in its own organisational folderol, it seems the AMA is spending more time on its own internal squabbling and setting of formalisms than actually checking to see if its advocates are doing their job properly. A concerted effort needs to be made for people to check the quality of work being done, whether the advocate is actually working on the case or has instead "dropped the ball", check that the advocate is being sensible and is not "wiki-lawyering", etc. This must not be implemented as a formalism; instead, all AMA members should, from time to time, have a good look at the cases, and watch for this - the Coordinators should be ensuring this is happening, but appear not to be doing so at the present. It takes only one bad advocate to create a bad name for the organisation as a whole. This is not, however, to be taken in support of restrictive advocate selection - it's just people have to keep their eyes open and maintain common sense about what is acceptable.
  • Define clearly what an advocate should actually be doing and make sure, further to the above, they are sticking to it. It must be made clear to advocates that they are there to represent and advise the user, but not there to act as lawyers, nor to defend the indefensible. Although I can see logic in the idea that everyone has a right to representation, the idea that even the patently guilty should be defended is one carried over from law, and not one that belongs here on Wikipedia. In this case, the arbitrators are perfectly justified in being irritated at AMA advocates officiously trying to gum up the works of arbitration when defending users who obviously need punitive action to be brought against them for the good of the community. In short, the AMA absolutely must work with the community's interest in mind as well, not just that of its clients.
  • Simplify the request process. Although the new-version request page is not intrinsically difficult to follow, the overall appearance of it is one of unnecessary complexity, and I found from my work at the MedCab that getting users to jump through convoluted hoops in order to request assistance will achieve nothing other than a ream of paperwork and endless administrative work. It needs to be succinct and actually glean from users what is needed to carry out the case in a concise manner.
  • Permit "ordinary people" to implement changes in the AMA - the suffering of the submission of proposals before anything is changed, and officious attitudes held by its coordinators on the subject, is utterly pointless. I would implement the {{sofixit}} idea instead, in that people just fix whatever is broken. This reduces the task I have described above of rehabilitating the AMA down to something possible, rather than something that would inevitably fail due to the insufferable stream of proposals that would be needed. Indeed, this is an issue that annoys me personally as I am extremely tempted to jump in and fix these things - but I know if I was to do so, I would not be well-received, due to this rigid structure of authority and pseudo-democracy.

I hope this outlines a potential strategy on what needs to be done. Should there be any way I can help with this, please do let me know. Yours, --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) 03:24, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I wonder why he didn't do the same to my userpage. אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA)Give Back Our Membership! 03:50, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
