Speedy deletion nomination of Casbah (Algeria)

[edit]

Hello, AridCeption,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Hughesdarren, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged an article that you started, Casbah (Algeria), for deletion, because it is a very short article that doesn't provide readers with enough context to determine who or what the subject is.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Hughesdarren}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Population figures from different years

[edit]

AridCeption Hey I noticed you edited a lot of Japanese prefecture articles like Hiroshima Prefecture and added populations for cities and towns. It looks like you copied the numbers from each city/town's Wikipedia page, which is not a good idea because the numbers are often from different years, or might not even have a source. In general, a population table should specify the year/source, and it should be the same for all entries. I would also be careful with copying info from other Wiki articles.

If you want, I can find up-to-date sources for you to use to update the figures! Otherwise, could you please revert the edits where you copied from other articles, because I think it's doing more harm than good?

Cheers, Fredlesaltique (talk) 04:50, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I will remove the population section and leave the land area section. Is that okay? AridCeption (talk) 05:32, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you can supply the population numbers as of 2021? AridCeption (talk) 05:49, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AridCeption: Thanks! Yeah probably best to remove for now. I don't know which other articles you edited but you might want to check those too. If you want to update Hiroshima Prefecture, the annual data for 2020 is here: [1] under the section at the very bottom. (You could use the monthly stats at the top too). The Excel data (市区町別人口,世帯数及び人口動態(年報) (Excelファイル)(18KB)) should have all the cities and towns in there. I'm sorry but most prefectures don't have comprehensive data in English :( Cheers, Fredlesaltique (talk) 01:04, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Maybe you could provide data for the other 46 prefectures? AridCeption (talk) 01:50, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ahaha that's a lot of prefectures. Did you want to start with any in particular? I noticed you edited some Hokkaido articles.
I updated Kagawa, and I'll try to send you some when I can, but generally you want to look on the prefecture's homepage. Usually there's a statistics (統計) department, and they almost always publish estimates multiple times a year.
Oh and for areas, this is the best source: [2]. They just released updated info for January 1, 2021 (PDF link here). Cheers, Fredlesaltique (talk) 06:10, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Okay! We can start with the Kyushu region and Hokkaido region and continue on. AridCeption (talk) 07:53, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sources for area and population figures for Chinese subdivisions?

[edit]

Please provide reliable sources for the figures you're adding; otherwise your edits are likely to be reverted, especially when you're changing figures that already cite a source. Cobblet (talk) 02:52, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't provide a source, we don't know whether you've simply made up the figure. Does the Chinese Wikipedia provide a source? If it does, cite the same source here. If it does not, do not use the figure, because somebody might also have made it up over there. Cobblet (talk) 03:42, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
While I appreciate that you're being bold, it is poor form to ignore another editor's concerns about your edits. Doing so makes it more difficult for the community to assume that you're acting in good faith. Please consider acting in accordance with WP:BRD. Cobblet (talk) 03:54, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The list on counties of China was not organised, and some data on some counties were lacking, such as maps, area or population.

While I appreciate the desire to improve the English Wikipedia by filling in missing basic statistics, if you blindly copy figures from unreliable sources without checking them against reliable sources, you are not improving Wikipedia at all. For example, take another look at zh:海晏县. Notice that the article text gives the area as 4853.08 km2, and provides a source which appears to be at least somewhat reliable. You didn't copy that figure. Instead you copied the figure from the infobox which gives 4,443.1 km2 without providing a source. How do you know this value is more accurate than the first one? If you don't take your figures from reliable sources (and cite them so that everyone else can verify your work), you might easily end up merely copying errors from unreliable sources (like the Chinese Wikipedia) to the English Wikipedia, which only makes Wikipedia worse. Cobblet (talk) 04:51, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry. AridCeption (talk) 05:59, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

is there a place where i can get data for the area and populations like censuses?

General: For district-level statistics on any subject, the best source is usually the statistical yearbook (统计年鉴) published annually by each province-level statistical bureau. Here's Ningxia's for example, which gives 3523.09 km2 (see under 1-1) for Hongsibu District: you had given 2,756.22 km2 without providing a source.

Population: The statistical yearbooks provide 2010 census population data, and while the 2020 census results are currently being published, they will not appear in the statistical yearbooks until next year. I haven't looked into whether complete district-level 2020 census results are available somewhere else – I think the National Bureau of Statistics only holds provicial-level data, although I could be wrong. City Population has been slowly updating district-level 2020 census results province by province over the last few months. It also has complete 2010 data.

The statistical yearbooks will also often provide population estimates in non-census years as well, although you must read the notes carefully to see whether the estimates are based on the hukou system (户籍人口), a less accurate representation of the district population (since many people work far away from their hukou location), or if they are estimates of the permanent resident population (常住人口), which IIRC is based on vital and migration statistics and is a better reflection of how many people actually live in the district. If you only report one figure, report the most recently available census figure (whether 2010 or 2020) rather than any of the estimates, as the former are more authoritative and you also avoid having to worry about the basis for the estimate.

Area: This can get tricky if for some reason you cannot rely on the statistical yearbook. For example, the website of the Qinghai Bureau of Statistics seems to be down and data from recent yearbooks (e.g., 2019) have not been archived and do not seem to be publicly available anywhere else. City Population gives area data (search the district pinyin name), which it says are based on "mainly 2018 boundaries", but it's not clear what primary source they're getting their data from. Boundary changes are not that common, but the 全国行政区划信息查询平台, which is the most authoritative place to check for this sort of thing, also seems to be down. Somebody on the Chinese Wikipedia seems to be keeping track of changes since 1987: I have not used them myself, but those lists might be reliable.

The reason why the primary source matters is that there's more than one, which is the reason why you find widely divergent numbers in different sources. 海晏县 turns out to be a good example: the district website gives both 4853 and 4443.1 km2. 行政区划网 gives 4853 km2 but also notes that the 行政区划简册 (not available online, AFAIK) gives 4348 km2. City Population gives 4853 km2. When available, the statistical yearbook is your best bet. When it's not, I would turn to City Population (mainly because I've used the site for 10+ years and have come to trust it for population data), but would not rely on it for area data without checking other sources like I've done here. Whatever sources you end up using, cite them.

I'm sure this is a way more detailed response than you were looking for. But researching Chinese statistics is rarely a simple task. And all this is why you must cite the source you use for anything you do on Wikipedia, but especially for Chinese data. Cobblet (talk) 03:37, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Would you mind providing the websites for the other provinces? AridCeption (talk) 09:07, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

At the bottom of the home page for the National Bureau of Statistics, there are links to each provincial-level statistical bureau. You should be able to find the yearbooks from there. Cobblet (talk) 13:41, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
