Mrmiscellanious Banned Me After Voting @ Wikinews.

[edit]

Hi, I'm not sure where else to contact you since I'm now banned from making edits at Wikinews.

Mrmiscellanious banned me from wikinews in retribution for exercising my right to vote against a potential admin he supported here. As my history of edits will show, I made no other edits or comments on Wikinews since that vote at all. I just voted, then was banned by Mrmiscellanious shortly thereafter.

If there was already clear consensus of a dire problem with me existing on Wikinews, why did Mrmiscellanious wait until after I made that vote (he didn't agree with) to ban me? I signed up some time ago and Mrmiscellanious (and others) observed me in the Water Cooler back in early February, but no ban was made against me (by Mrmiscellanious or anyone else) until I made that vote.

The timing of this ban is about power and control, not truly enforcing policy, consensus and making Wikinews a better place. I also fear that this form of intimidation could adversely affect other Wikinews contributers and influence their votes when they see what happens to those who vote in ways that Mrmiscellanious doesn't like. If contributers perceive their votes may exact revenge upon themselves, I'm sure less contributers will vote and make their voices heard. That seems to be the opposite effect of what a Wiki is supposed to be all about.

Anyway, I'm sorry to waste your time with this and take away from more important things like contributions, etc. but I'm hoping you can fix this so I can make positive contributions to Wikinews when time allows.

I have no intention to talk (argue, etc.) with Mrmiscellanious about this once I'm able to edit and vote again (or even if I'm not). I'll will just drop it and moo-ve on. If he attacks or bans me for revenge again, I'll just contact you and hopefully you can get him to chill out and focus on important issues at Wikinews.

As can be observed here & elsewhere throughout Wikinews, Mrmiscellanious is embroiled in enough conflict with others right now -- and I have no desire to distract him from all those other conflicts in order to confront him with the issue of banning me. He seems to have enough conflict with others on his plate. I'll just be glad to move on, vote and contribute positively to more important, positive Wikinews tasks. Thank you for your time. Amgine has now blocked me from editing my talk page

[edit]

Amgine moved in quickly and has now blocked me from editing my talk page on wikinews.

Be sure to check out the last few edits in the History. He was not letting me say I thought the Chinese govt. was fascist because it might offend some Chinese contributers. I changed the "bastard" part and he still wouldn't accept my edit and banned me.

Is is really against Wiki policy to say that you think the Chinese government is fascist on your own talk page? If so, things are getting very out of control at Wikinews. Check the last few edits and you'll see what I'm talking about. This is crazy. Cowicide 07:14, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're not allowed to put things in your user-space that offends people. Wikipedia has similiar policies. Bawolff 20:32, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Among other things, MrM says he doesn't agree with Homosexuality on his page... that will very well offend people. Shall we ban him if he doesn't remove the "offensive" text? For me to say that I think the Chinese govt. is fascist... that is my political opinion. I removed the "bastards" reference... therefore, it was only my political opinion beyond that point. Can you HONESTLY say that political opinion is NOT allowed on talk pages? If that's the case, you and Amgine had better start cleaning house and you both can start with MrM's talk page with his opinions that very clearly offend people somewhere.

I'm going to put the statement that I think the Chinese govt. is fascist on my talk page on Wikinews. Come after me if you TRULY think that political speech on individual talk pages are against the rules. Then please come after MrM for his opinion page thereafter.

Seeing as thats a protected page, I wonder how you'll go about doing that. Bawolff 02:36, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I find it sad that you two don't see the irony in removing my opinion on the Chinese govt. and its fascist censorship. Cowicide 02:13, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its not that it may offend somebody somewhere, its that somebody complained. If you complained that mrm's opinions offend you than I could get him to kill thoose if you cared so much (and provided a good argument as to why you care). You can state the chinese thing in a way thats not offensive as well. (al la. I don't like the way the PRC is censoring the internet) and some people on wikinews do have similiar things written on their talk page. Its a little tiny thing. You shouldn't be so concerned. (or if you care that much you'll probally have better luck with a fork). Bawolff 02:36, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just tired of the hypocrisy from Amgine and MrM. It's ruining Wikinews, period. If those 2 guys disappeared from Wikinews, quality contributions/participation would skyrocket. I don't understand the fear some of you seem to have of them, Amgine should lose his admin status and MrM should be "permabanned" instead of this too little, too late one month (now only 2 week) ban he just got for his outrageous behavior with Karen (A behavior Amgine has also exhibited with other contributers). You know very well this is NOT the first time MrM has used his admin power for revenge, ego and agenda instead of for the greater good of Wikinews. You also know very well it won't be the last time until MrM is completely banned. It's incredible that MrM still has admin status at this point. He has massively damaged the project and thwarted participation. MrM makes the environment at Wikinews absolutely nasty. For the sake of Wikinews, these guys need to go and/or lose admin privs. I'm just thankful MrM will be gone for a month so everyone can see how much the general civility & quality at Wikinews rises without him. Maybe then some more people will see the light and finally... finally... at least remove MrM's ridiculous admin status. Cowicide 18:56, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your disagreements with mrm, (and to a point, agree with most of them), but fail to see your problem with Amgine. Sure s/he may have done some bad things, But the good things that s/he has done outways them vastly in my opinion. Bawolff 20:19, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Amgine certainly does good things, but does NOT have the interpersonal skills and tact to be an admin. While I somewhat commend Amgine's recent reprimands of MrM.... it's too little, too late... overall, in the past, Amgine has been an enabler for MrM and that has absolutely ruined the spirit at Wikinews. Amgine's demeanor towards new contributers has also been nasty similar to (but not quite as venomous as) MrM.

They both have created a hostile environment with rampant hypocrisy for all to see. Wikinews would be better off with MrM gone entirely and Amgine focusing on projects instead of ego-trip power struggles. Contributership has been very low. If Amgine backed off (which is unlikely because of ego) and MrM disappeared, we both know contributership would blossom as the general good spirit increased. If you still fail to see my problem with Amgine... go take a look at Amgine's demeanor with contributers and compare it with your own. Would YOU want to be treated like that? You exhibit some of the best qualities in an admin, while I think Amgine exhibits some of the worst. And, MrM is just poison to the project, period.

Like I said, Amgine should focus on projects and leave interpersonal administration up to people that have much higher aptitude for such things. Mark my words, the Wikinews contributership and quality would improve drastically if that happened. I'd like to see more balanced views (from the middle, right & left) on wikinews from MORE contributers from all walks of life... the current environment Amgine helps to create does NOT let that happen... it just repels far too many newbies who don't want to deal with a terse, insulting tone in their spare time. They just put up their arms and split. Cowicide 21:52, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thats certainly intreasting. Well I disagree with most of that, its intreasting to know what people think. I have never found Amgine to be rude or anything to any contributor, New or otherwise. I don't wish to comment on too much else as, I've already made alot of people mad at me, and wish to tread lightly.(people finnally stoped blocking eachother, but their certainly a little edgy) Bawolff 04:29, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I could send you examples of Amgine's behavior (with others), but if you need to "tread lightly" that's fine. Anyway, I think you are a great admin and wish you well. Hopefully, Wikinews will "self-heal" over time and become a less hostile place as MrM and some others become too beleaguered to be nasty to other people eventually. Take care. Cowicide 15:37, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, here's some ideas for articles on my userpage (Wikinews) on the latest from China and its censorship: http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User:Cowicide It would be great if Wikinews covered this stuff more like the rest of the Western world is starting to. Wikinews IS part of the Western world, right? ;) Thanks again for lending an ear. Cowicide 16:11, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They removed it AND edited the History data... - here instead:

You know, I've heard that there might be some admins at Wikinews that may have some govt. affiliations. I didn't really think it was true before, but I'm very seriously beginning to wonder at this point... Cowicide 16:53, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bawolff,
Thank you very much for informing me of the user Goober-peas. I would prefer it if s/he did actually remove his statement. I don't know why s/he seems to hate me; I have never heard of the user before. I am actually slightly worried about him/her beacuse I have actually been receiving e-mails about my password being reset. Thank you once again for alerting me about this. Crisis on Bae Yong Joon

[edit]

Of late, there has been a spam of newly registered users and annoyomous users trying to remove certain data from the article. While most article cites general personal data on personalities in wikipedia on a neutral basis, these editors have been removing certain data without cause to suit their taste (see Wikipedia:NPOV). Such acts have been rampant since March 2006 (check the article's history), and such behaviour can be reflected as Wikipedia:Vandalism, and this article needs Semi-protection status against such crisis. I need your help in solving this problem. Thanks. Mr Tan 17:32, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeh, i didn't see the template on the Dungeons & Dragons page before i requested it to be merged. {{split-apart}}. If i had, wouldn't have suggested merge. I said because he was. He attacked my island, and stole the church, the st. francis monastery and the council house. He was a pirate with the royal consent, like many others british admirals. This is not a revenge or something like that, it is just the historic truth. I'm talking about San Miguel de La Palma, Canary Islands, Northwest Africa, Spanish Kingdom. Maybe I'm in a mistake, but I learned it at school. Very sorry if I have offende anyone and please excuse my horrible english grammar. Same here. Wouldn't GFDL suffice for you to copy the templates over to Wikinews? All contributions here are automatically licensed under GFDL. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:53, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou, This message is sufficent for permission. GFDL does not suffice as we (the wikinewsies) do not consider it really free for for news articles. Wikinews is not under the gfdl. Bawolff

Re: Location maps

[edit]

Hi, I would willingly put these maps under cc-by-sa-2.5, however the location maps that I have produced are derived from content on the OpenStreetMaps website. They licence under cc-by-sa-2.0--because of the share-alike clause, I'm not sure then whether I can release these maps under any other licence. Is 2.5 backwards compatible? —Jeremy (talk) 01:06, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't understand, what should I do to let you use these maps? Change the license? Don Alessandro 10:37, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As Jeremy said above, as some of my data was from OpenStreetMap, all derived works must be released under cc-by-sa (it says cc-by-sa-2.0, but I imagine simliar cc-by-sa ones would be fine). As far as I can tell, I could not release it under cc-by-2.5. Richard B 11:54, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK. note: I'm not 100% sure the copyright can apply to data like that, I'm just asking to be on the safe side. However I'd like to point out the cc-by-sa-2.0 is not compatible with the gfdl. Bawolff 21:53, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bawolff

[edit]
I'm not sure if this is the place to answer your query about hypersudoku, but the four extra
squares in hyper sudoku have to also have numbers 1-9 in them. As they overlap the squares
underneath this makes it a little trickier. The algorithm for working out the numbers is many
many times more complicated. As for the image, it is the work of Chris McCusker, that's me,

and I have no problem with it being distributed or reused. The site that runs the hypersudoku hypersudoku.com [1] makes no profit from people playing the game. It's all free, go and play a game if you like. Thanks, cmccus01.

Thanks for your response. In future, for stuff relating to wikinews, I would prefer if you used n:user talk:Bawolff (Just so i could keep track of everything better). The image should be okay with that information in mind, however the article sounds spammy, and probably needs to be written in a less promotional sounding manner. Also, (I'm assuming you're the one who wrote the article), since you own the site, there is a conflict of interest with you writing a news article on it for wikinews, so I don't think the article can be published unfortunatly. Yes - it was actually a press release snapshot photograph from an NIH function. It appears that NIH has deleted the source ohot from its site. The award was part of an otherwise very busy picture, but the shot was head-on so I could cut out all the extraneous people, etc. To cover some of the jagged lines from the edit, I added a drop shadow - which looks as if it has been badly cropped by some other Wiki editor. - Davodd 16:06, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

EB and Wikipedia

[edit]

When I was in Grade IV (1963), I had the first glimpse Edgar Allan Poe's pages in Encyclopedia Britannica, at my aunt's house, due to our class assignment. In 1973, I had used EB 2 times at the Loyola House of Studies Library. In 2006, it was the first time I opened Wikipedia researching on witches. Today, our Encyclopedia online has devastated EB, but the latter still sways - proudly displayed in almost all top libraries of this weird planet. I am fascinasted with witches[2] Six suspected witches lynched in Pokot. They were burned at stakes by the Inquisition during the Middle Ages.

Last night, I was watching EWTN, and I learned that anything that twinkles or had sparkled do possess the time of death. Many of us administrators, here, and tons of our users/editors had made this project with its sister projects, phenomenal. Soon, all of us will retire or be tired, as new sysops will bloom amid the fall of this project IN TIME. Nothing is permanent said the wise man from the West. Wikipedia and Mr. Jimbo Wales will fade in time, but we admins will leave traces or marks, footprints so to speak, in online history. I had viewed featured articles written by best Wiki-adm and I found that 70% of these powerful button-holders created one of the best biographies compared to EB's which were authored by professionals/eggs-perths. Deep thought reveals to me that the flaw is abuse: any administrator can push button any nemesis, detractor, tons of enemies, and even personal enemies of those friends who voted in his or her or a sysops LGBT's RFA. Blocking is a "quickie." When I earned my Ph.D. in psychiatry, I had written a beautiful thesis on cancer, stroke, nerve disorders vis-a-vis hatred, anger, vendetta and pure failure to accept LGBT as disease. Vandalism and sockpuppets abound here, amid patrol-lers, coz of those who were blocked due to godfather-button-chicanery things.
To illustrate this point: my cousin lived in LA as immigrant for 10 years. She never talked to Mexicans since they would have her deported to Mexico. She explained to me crab mentality - "When my neighbor had outage or fights with his boyfriend, the former brings the anger in the e-forum, blogs, office and in Wikipedia," said Pong. As administrator, you cannot fight alone, arguing against a blank wall when at your back an adm (either lesbian or gay, trans, or bi-sex, but not a witch) had already decided and even planned a blocking. I myself was asked by a friend admin to block his nemesis, but I refused politely. There is no way that Jimbo Wales can cure this disease, do it, since he is even plaged by the IP address posting issues spammed by EB. EB posters abound in Wikipedia to destroy Wikipedia since November 2008 amid blocks of Wikipedia in some countries like China. I am dropping to you my 2.1 cents. Best of Luck.[3]--58.69.139.52 (talk) 07:13, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Now that it is working...a bug: the popup box often isn't big enough to hold all the definitions, so the final line with the "more" link (and sometimes parts of the definitions as well) gets cut off.--ragesoss (talk) 22:11, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The script should be copying over the verified hooks in the recent nominations and those in the older nominations. The section it shouldn't copy from is the "Special occasions" section, since that is only a small section and doesn't need a special page to manage it. Hi, After a little research, I also got it correctly. But I did more edits than you suggested.

for eg. I replaced

Actually I like usability of that extension. But unfortunately we cannot use it because our language not defined in iso-8859-1 :(. Your suggestions are very useful and I'll use them surely. thanks--Praveen:talk 17:51, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DYKVerified?

[edit]

I noticed the article I created, Sufyan ibn `Uyaynah on your sub page User:Bawolff/DYKVerified#Articles created/expanded on February 1. It does not have a verified stamp on it whereas the other articles do, has this article actually been verified? Thanks in advance. Supertouch (talk) 12:54, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, people are actually using that :) - i thought it got lost in the depths of talk page archives. The page should probably be moved out of my userspace if people are actually using it. (but thats irrelevent to the issue at hand). I'm unsure why its copying it over there if there is no verified stamp on it, it shouldn't. (/me goes investigates). Bawolff (talk) 06:13, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like there was an extra space after the closing ==== in the headline which caused the script to think it was part of the proceeding headline. (script should now recognize such headers). The script also seemed to fail to identify the February 1 header as a section break. I don't know why, but it doesn't seem to affect anything. I'll investigate that more later. Anyways should all work now, thanks for the bug report. Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 07:03, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

UI enhancement proposal

[edit]

Hey Bawolff. I noticed you are familiar with Bugzilla and MediaWiki. Was wondering if you could see into the technical posibilities of this proposal, when you get the time? Best regards. Rehman 11:21, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was actually just reading that bug earlier today. There already exists an extension (as a result of bugzilla:13520 ) to do that, but it has not been reviewed by a senior developer (aka tim) for security/performance, and this would be the type of thing that would probably have performance implications if not done carefully. It also seems to be more of a user sets status rather then an auto-set status thing where the auto-set away status seems more desirable. There's also the whole, do the sysadmins think the concept is a Good Idea™, which seems to be an open question based on ^demon's comments on bugzilla. Helvetica typeface on Wikimedia

[edit]

Recently I'm fiddling with SVG fonts due to Jarry1250's SVG Check on WMF Labs not sharing the same complete library of typefaces with Wikimedia: Liberation Sans apparently falls back to Helvetica. But my question is: Isn't Helvetica a licensed typeface? Also this Helvetica appears to be not quite the same as the commercial version. In my file:St petersburg metro map sb ru.svg, some Cyrillic alphabets rendered by Wikimedia[4] like "ж" (zhe) has greater effective width, some like "я" (ya) just look entirely different when I open the SVG file natively in my iPhone 5 by Safari. I wonder if normal user could download the fonts installed on Wikimedia server for inspection. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 03:26, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sameboat. I don't know about the real servers (Although generally I think tool labs has all the fonts the real servers have, plus a couple), but on tool labs:
tools.sequencer@tools-login:~/public_html/mwEmbedStandAlone$ fc-match 'Helvetica'
n019003l.pfb: "Nimbus Sans L" "Regular"
tools.sequencer@tools-login:~/public_html/mwEmbedStandAlone$ fc-match 'Liberation Sans'
n019003l.pfb: "Nimbus Sans L" "Regular"

So both those font names end up going to Nimbus Sans L. All fonts on Wikimedia servers are open source, and from the ubuntu repositories. So in principle you can download all of them, but if you're not using linux some might be hard to install. If you're using ubuntu (or probably any other debian derivitive) you can install them using the command apt-get install <font-package>, where font-package is the things on the list at https://git.wikimedia.org/blob/operations%2Fpuppet.git/production/modules%2fmediawiki%2fmanifests%2fmultimedia.pp . All fonts on that list can also be downloaded manually, but may require some googline (e.g. first one on that list can be downloaded from https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/trusty/fonts-arabeyes/trusty/files ). Bawolff (talk) 04:03, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. And I'm using Windows XP/7. I'm not starting the doubt that if Helvetica is actually installed on Wikimedia server. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 04:46, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK, the real Helvetica is not open source, so it's not going to be used on Wikimedia servers. Nimbus Sans L, is used instead because its fairly close. Bawolff (talk) 07:28, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't we just remove (or hide) Helvetica from the meta:SVG fonts list by now? -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk) 07:33, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. I imagine much of that list is incorrect. Bawolff (talk) 07:44, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure if you are the person to ask, but in this version of the packed mode gallery, the gallery caption recenters when you change the browser window width. however, in this version it doesn't. the difference is with the first one, I didn't use the gallery tag's built-in caption feature, but in the second one, I did. Peter coxhead reported the problem to me after I converted some of the galleries to use the gallery tag with mode=packed. Frietjes (talk) 18:42, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

* <nicole_> I am not very familiar with IRC unfortunately. I am [[user:Nicole Sharp]] on Wikimedia. I left you a number of messages but have not heard back. You erroneously put a block on my WikiNews account. If you can please fix this, it would be much appreciated.

* <pizero|afk> Erroneous? As I recall, we asked you not to do something you came back a while later and were doing it again, and I blocked you to prevent you doing it. And I believe you have the ability to write on your talk page, so that's where it should be discussed.
* <nicole_> The block is clearly erroneous, as I have replied to your posts on both Wikipedia and WikiNews. If you still have a dispute, the issue needs to be referred to an impartial administrator so the block can be removed.
* <nicole_> I have tried to be both polite and patient on this as long as I can. Blocking is not an effective measure to prevent users from making constructive edits to Wikimedia projects. Anyone can make edits from any IP address or a new account. I'd rather edit under my own account though if I can.
* <nicole_> I would like to think that your block was erroneous and misguided, and not a malicious effort to vandalize my Wikimedia account by preventing me from constructively contributing to WikiNews and maintain my own userpage there.
* <nicole_> Either way though, the block needs to be fixed.
* <pizero|afk> You weren't making constructive edits. You were making edits that caused a problem. This was explained to you, and instead of finding a way to be more constructive, you went away for a while and then came back and make a confusing mess again. So I blocked you to prevent you continuing to confuse things. You have continued to demonstrate an aggressively nasty attitude toward requests to...
* <pizero|afk> ...not cause problems. I also note there has never been any sign whatever that you ever wanted to contribute to Wikinews, so that claim appears to be completely spurious.
<nicole_> You blocked my account without allowing me to make any edits outside of my userpagespace. If you cannot fix the problem, then the issue has to be referred to other administrators. I have already explained multiple times the issue you were confused on both on your Wikipedia talkpage and on my WikiNews talkpage, as you requested.
* <pizero|afk> I wasn't confused, and am not confused. You seem to have never understood that you were causing a problem.
* <nicole_> There are no problems with a wikiuser updating and maintaining their own userpage. In fact, that is a very useful and helpful practice.
* <nicole_> Stopping a user from updating their own userpage is erroneous and misguided at best, and malicious and vandalistic at worst.
* <pizero|afk> You changed *other* users' pages. You changed those pages in a way that would be inappropriate even if you proved they were alternate accounts of yours (which you didn't). And you changed your own user talk page so as to hide administratively significant evidence, which is not acceptable. And now, instead of trying to be constructive you're spending your time and effort accusing adminstrators o
* <pizero|afk> f mistakes or misconduct for a simple, non-judgemental preventative block against misbehavior on your part that you were warned about prior to the block. Moreover, you're continuing the pattern of obfuscation by making this conversation private.
* <nicole_> I have never and never would alter another users' userpage. Nor have I ever attempted to "hide" or "obfuscate" any edits or changes to Wikimedia, as you can clearly see from both my Wikimedia userpages and my talkpages. I only contacting you here on IRC because you refused to reply to any of my posts on Wikimedia. Since it seems we cannot come to a resolution, I will go ahead and copy/paste our conversation here (so far) to Wikimedia for archiving so that other admins can review the facts and make the decision to correct your block if you are unwilling to do so.
* <pizero|afk> I did not refuse to respond on your talk pages. Since you just reminded me, I've been trying to write a short note on your en.wn talk page, but haven't had time to do so since you've been monopolizing my time with this private conversation.
* <nicole_> It would be more helpful to reply on Wikipedia, since your block does not allow me to reply to anything you post on WikiNews.
* <pizero|afk> That's blatantly false (as are a number of thing things you've said here). The appropriate place for discussion is your en.wn user talk page; nothing prevents you from replying.
* <nicole_> I have been unable to make any edits other than creating new posts.
* <nicole_> I copied and pasted our IRC conversation above to a new WikiNews admin on Wikipedia. I posted to your Wikipedia talkpage with the wikilink.
* <nicole_> I should add also that I find your actions most particularly frustrating since even if you were not in error blocking me, all I need to do to edit my WikiNews userpage is log out and edit anonymously. There are plenty of both public and private IP addresses that I can edit from. However, I would much prefer to resolve this properly by having my account unblocked so that my edits are under my usernam
* <nicole_> e.
* <nicole_> *frustrating and nonsensical
* <pizero|afk> So, you're continuing to obfuscate the situation by spreading it all hither-and-yon across the wiki-sphere. One of my weaknesses, as you may indeed have figured out by now, is that I hate to think ill of people, so I'm sometimes slow to conclude that somebody is deliberately causing problems. But that's seeming more and more likely in your case. If you'd put a fraction of the effort into...
* <pizero|afk> ...working with us that you've put into complaining, the situation would have been resolved ages ago. Enough of this, you've managed to monopolize an entire hour of my time tonight, that's more than enough.

resummation

[edit]
  • There a number of different posts on a number of different wikipages (since I am blocked by @Pi zero: from posting directly to WikiNews), so I thought it would be helpful to quickly resummarize here what happened and Pizero's reaction. I have been a contributor to Wikimedia for many years, and over the years, have had different usernames, as documented at "user:Nicole_Sharp#old_Wikimedia_accounts" and at " http://nicoleruizsharp.altervista.org/w/wikipages ." On each Wikimedia project, for each of my old usernames, I have placed redirect links to my current userpage "user:Nicole Sharp," and on each Wikimedia project, have also placed an archive link on each talkpage to "user talk:Nicole Sharp/archive" with the archives of the talkpages from my old accounts. Every single Wikimedia project except for WikiNews though. As soon as I began placing the redirect links to update my old userpages on WikiNews, user @Pi zero: blocked my account without so much as a discussion with me (see "wikinews:user talk:Nicole Sharp#block"). I have been unable to make any edits or correct my old userpages on WikiNews since. I can go in at any time anonymously or with a new account, but I would much rather just have Pizero's erroneous block fixed so that my edits are under the correct username. I would also like to add that WikiNews has the lowest amount of webtraffic for any Wikimedia domain, and needs helpful educated editors who can contribute to the project. Blocking users from simply maintaining their own userpages is a very harmful and anti-Wikimedian way to alienate contributors from the project. The fact that Pizero ignored my posts for so long, and still refuses to correct the block, to me seems to be bordering on malicious and vandalistic instead of just simply erroneous and misguided. Nicole Sharp (talk) 02:32, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • I havent been an active admin at wikinews for years and i dont really want to be drawn into whatever dispute this is. Its clear that pi zero didnt "accidentally" block you (which seems to be your original claim) and it appears he has been discussing the matter with you (contrary to the original claim that he refused to talk to you). If you think the block was inapropriate, please find an active wikinews admin to request a second opinion from. Bawolff (talk) 16:29, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • Are there any active admins on WikiNews other than @Pi zero:? You are the third I have contacted, and the first to even post a reply. The admin list is already quite short to have such nonparticipation in the project. The admin list needs to be updated so that users know who is active or not active to help with administrative problems on WikiNews. I have gone ahead and reposted to a fourth admin at "user talk:Blood Red Sandman#WikiNews admin needed," but I again have no way of knowing if they are active or not. If you know an admin or admins who are active, please forward this problem to them for me, so that my account can get unblocked, thanks! @Pi zero: has refused to undo their actions, and another admin is needed to unblock my account. Nicole Sharp (talk) 17:26, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • I just finished the "metawikimedia:harassment consultation 2015." According to the survey, the actions of admin @Pi zero: do meet the Wikimedia Foundation's definition of content vandalism hasarassment for blocking me from constructively editing and updating my own userpage (and my old userpages) on WikiNews. My experiences on Wikimedia have always been positive, other than this single incident of harassment on WikiNews by @Pi zero:. If the WikiNews admins cannot correct the actions of @Pi zero:, the survey recommends that I contact MetaWiki and open a request there. Nicole Sharp (talk) 18:44, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How to Install MediaWiki on a Linux Desktop ?

[edit]

I saw that you do this. I want to run a wiki on my computer with MediaWiki syntax, not on a separate server. All search results are sparse and incomplete recipes. Can you provide a recipe?

see my research: User:T3g5JZ50GLq/MediaWiki Linux Desktop
T3g5JZ50GLq (talk) 01:59, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi User:T3g5JZ50GLq - I think you're overthinking things. Installing MediaWiki on linux is pretty easy. If you're using debian/ubuntu, you can do sudu apt install mediawiki. Otherwise, just install (with apt or whatever your package manager is) php, apache, php-mysql, mysqld, then download and extract the MediaWiki tarball into the web directory (often /var/www/html ), and follow the instructions. If you get stuck at a specific step, ask at the #mediawiki irc channel. Bawolff (talk) 04:09, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey User:Bawolff, I want to do an as-lightweight-as-possible server stack installation, and I believe the repository mediawiki is not as current as the tarball, so I want to install a lightweight server stack, then extract the MediaWiki tarball into the web directory. I do not know if just installing lighttpd mariadb-server php-fpm (or FastCGI) is sufficient, or how much RAM, Hard Disk, and CPU resources such an installation would use, as this would be on a January 2016 1.6 GHz Celeron with 4GB RAM, but with other tools in use, I would only be able to allow 750MB at the most for MW+LLMP. So what are the resource requirements that you have encountered in your deployment on your laptop?
T3g5JZ50GLq (talk) 09:26, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably fine as long as you're not serving a lot of people. If using php-apcu (A good idea. It will improve performance significantly) you can adjust acpu.shm_size to adjust how much ram is used by cache. If you want really lightweight, you can use sqlite instead of mysql (sqlite will have worse performance if multiple people are visiting the site at the same time, but is probably fine if its just you and will reduce resource usage as you don't have to have a mysql server running all the time). The debian package will be older than the most recent mw, it is usually the LTS release. Bawolff (talk) 10:29, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bawolff, I plan on using it only for myself. In this case?:
A install: lighttpd,
M install one of: mysql sqlite mariadb-server,
P install one of: php-fpm php-apcu FastCGI
?

@T3g5JZ50GLq: You also need to install php-sqlite and php-mysql. The mysql package is probably the commandline access to mysql - which can be useful for debugging, but you probably want to go with mysql-server if you plan to go with mysql as your database. I'm assuming debian/ubuntu package names here, other distros might use different naming convention. My best advice here would be for you to try it and see what happens. The best way to learn is through experimenting. If you make a mistake, you can always start over - just try to install and see what happens. Bawolff (talk) 04:29, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

I really appreciate your assistance tonight with that little weird MediaWiki issue. I don't know why I feel like I'm the one who keeps finding these weird things, but...well... In any case, my colleagues and I will work next week to try and get all those non-attached accounts sorted, and you're subscribed to the phab task. I realize this edit probably didn't ping you, so I'll let you know here that I mentioned you at WT:ACN. Thank you for your efforts. – bradv🍁 22:24, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet

[edit]

Re: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38189878; The_Good_Place: "Ohhhhhh, THIS is the bad place!".

I mean, the title just called for that response. ;-)

More seriously though, I do still believe wikipedia is a pretty good spot as far as internet goes, but why do I feel that that's still such a low bar? No resting on one's laurels I guess! :-/ --Kim Bruning (talk) 22:04, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
