Welcome, DennisJOBrien@yahoo.com

Welcome to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia you (yes, you!) can edit! Here are some beginning links:

Also, I give you some tips:

  1. Feel free to edit any page. If you make a mistake in your first steps in Wikipedia, don't care: there's always someone that will fix it.
  2. Experiment in the sandbox. There you can test your editing skills without disrupting any article!
  3. Use ~~~~ (four tildes) for signing your comments with your nickname (set it on Special:Preferences) and timestamp on talk pages. If you don't want to add the timestamp, simply use ~~~ (three tildes).
  4. If you don't know where to begin, take a look on the most recent changes or a random page.

With some time here, you'll learn all Wikipedia processes and get yourself an experimented Wikipedians.

Yours! Neigel von Teighen

The Barnstar on Fire
For your great Fire related edits, I award you this Barnstar! — xaosflux Talk/CVU 19:21, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have attempted a rewrite of the paragraph as to not sound too over-the-top (Wikipedia articles must have a neutral tone when describing things). The reason for the neutral tone is because some topics covered in Wikipedia are controversial (try reading the article on George W. Bush where supporters and detractors (it seems more of the latter) are attempting to push their views on the article).

Please take a look at the following rewrite and tell me what you think of it (the notation of "citations needed" indicate the need for footnotes. Though one might know these passages as facts, someone who doesn't know about Pan Am would take these sentences as someone else's attempt at boosterism (e.g. advertising)).

At its height during the early 1970s, Pan Am was known as the "World's Most Experienced Airline."[citation needed] It was highly regarded for its state-of-the-art aircraft and the destinations it served. The airline was also respected for the experience and professionalism of its crews and cabin staff as well as for its onboard service.[citation needed] Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis preferred to fly First Class on Pan Am even though her Greek husband owned Olympic Airlines.

PentawingTalk 01:16, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since you have added the passage in the first place, I suggest you reinsert it with the suggested corrections (toning down the language, footnotes). I agree that Pan Am was once a very respected airline. However, one cannot assume that someone else will know this fact (talk to someone in their 20s or younger today about Pan Am and its full personalized service in all classes, and they might think you're crazy with today's domestic airline service), and with the open nature of Wikipedia unsourced "facts" must be looked at with greater scrutiny.
I should note that the reason for my "pickiness" with additions to this article is that it is a "featured article" (the best of the best that Wikipedia has to offer. There is much talk about the 1000th such article recently. In fact, Pan Am was even on the front page late last year). Nevertheless, without proper maintenance such articles can degenerate into a mess and lose their featured status, which is something I wish to avoid. PentawingTalk 03:00, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Ceiling and Rotunda of Grant's Tomb, New York, NY, as seen from lower crypt level.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ceiling and Rotunda of Grant's Tomb, New York, NY, as seen from lower crypt level.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 11:05, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello, it is definitely called the CARPENDER Center at Harvard. I know because I have visited it and remember well the unusual spelling. You can be sure of it. Message from DennisJOBrien@yahoo.com at 1:35 PM EST on Dec. 19, 2006.

Replaceable fair use Image:HickoryCluster-m.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:HickoryCluster-m.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 16:08, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Ceiling and Rotunda of Grant's Tomb, New York, NY.jpg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Ceiling and Rotunda of Grant's Tomb, New York, NY.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:25, 30 March 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:25, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for File:Ceiling and Rotunda of Grant's Tomb, New York, NY.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ceiling and Rotunda of Grant's Tomb, New York, NY.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
