I'm gonna need a bitta help...

[edit]

Well, im a bit of a noob and i wanna start working on an article explaining the culture of Kaszubs in Canada (Kashubians is the article of the polish Kaszubs...). I'm going to study up a bit more before I am ready, but since you're in the Ottawa Area, and you're part Pomeranian, i'd like your help when i am ready... -User:Zblewski

Thank you for participating in the WikiProject on Electoral districts in Canada. As you know there will be an election soon. So this may be the best time for the Canadian Wikipedia community to band together and write these articles on current federal electoral districts. Based on your comments, and the comments of others, I have put together a prototype layout at the above link. The prototype is not a final proposal. It is just a place to start from, where we can discuss and experiment. Please review it, comment but keep an open mind, and help form a concensus. --maclean25 01:06, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I see that you reverted my edits to Template:Kylie, and I thought I'd caution you about your misuse of the administrators' rollback feature. Per Wikipedia:Revert, "Rollbacks should be used with caution and restraint. Reverting a good-faith edit may send the message that "I think your edit was no better than vandalism and doesn't deserve even the courtesy of an explanatory edit summary." It is a slap in the face to a good-faith editor; do not abuse it. If you insist on using the rollback feature for non-vandalism edits, be sure to explain on the talk page of the user whose edit(s) you reverted." Also, anybody who was browsing Special:Recentchanges at the time or looking at the edit history for the template may get the wrong impression that my edits were vandalism, when they were not. I compressed the template because I feel that it is large and unwieldy, and this had been a problem with Template:Mariah Carey2 (see this TFD debate) and others. So I compressed it to include a link to Minogue's discography article. If you still do not agree with this, please reply at Template talk:Kylie. Thanks. Hello,

This has nothing to do with Canadian politics, but I'm wondering if you could look over the discussion on Talk:Gregory Lauder-Frost.

I have reason to believe that a small number of people have been attempting to use Wikipedia for narrow partisan ends, writing glowing articles on figures from Britain's far-right. This is potentially a matter of some importance for Wikipedia's credibility.

Hi, I've replaced the image Image:Calgaryflag.jpg, uploaded by you, with Image:Flag of Calgary, Alberta.svg because SVG is a more suitable format for images with no photographic content. The original image has been listed for deletion—hope this is OK. –Mysid 07:17, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

List of countries by number of active troops

[edit]

You are vandal. If you don't speek russian, I am speak and in the site of russian Ministry of Defense write: 1.01.04-1.286.00active troops , 1.01.05-1.140.00 active troops;Roitr 14:30, 9 December 2005

Your source in my opinion not consistent and in it have not absolutely exact information. I only wish to help to you and to give the correct information which precisely I know. Site of russian Ministry of Defense for me is more authoritative, than a World Almanac. Yours article calling "List of countries by number of active troops", but not "List of countries by number of active troops by World Almanac". It is good to use by World Almanac, when there is not other exact data, but if we have more authoritative resources we should use them. If you will change the page again, I shall be compelled to create another page and call it "List of countries by currently number of active troops". And please it is not necessary to frighten me of blocking. Roitr 19:35, 9 December 2005

Why you revert all the modifications that I DO... I pass 5 hours to work on the article of the borougs of MONTREAl and I discurved taht they have a lot of problem... For a lot of borough, they are TWO pages... It is anormal... If I want a information for a borough, you have to search on 2 pages.... it's crazy. So I erase one page and I past all the second page on the one page. All what I delete on a page is on the other page because I past it. It's more simple to have one page for one subject... So, please talk me before you do revert beacuse It's a lot of work that I do. Sincerely, Orthodoxe 19:39, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I understand. But, Iwill sujest you to inform the person that you revert for the motivation of the revert. Now, Why you revert Montréal-Nord because the official name is in French and not in english.

Polling charts

[edit]

Do you have any plans to do an SES polling chart similar to those you've done for several of the other pollsters for the 06 election? I would do one but it would probably look better for them all to have the same look and feel so I will defer to you if you are planning to do one. - Jord 13:56, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Stats

[edit]

Hello, I was trying to think of a way quick way to convey NHL statistics quickly, without doing it in paragraph form which does not look very good. I think I created a quick way to do this, check out the Steve Thomas (hockey). Let me know what you think. Croat Canuck 05:54, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and I completely agree with you that it must get expanded. What I'm saying is I will go through bio articles that do not have any stats at all and put in that quick box. I'm not saying it should be permanent by any stretch of the imagination, just temporary until another user finds time to complete the stats section. Its more meant for stubs. Hi. Looking at the history for this image, it is not clear to me what its copyright status is. Did you take this photograph and release it into the Public Domain? Another user seems to be claiming that you did. Sorry to bother you, and thanks ahead of time for clearing up the confusion. Jkelly 22:45, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that Image:Danielalfredsson.jpg has no source. Please see Wikipedia:Fair use for more information about what is needed for copyright-infringing images. Jkelly 23:08, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In regards to your response, I strongly suggest that you review Wikipedia:Fair use. In order to use an image we need information on its source, who owns the copyright and a detailed fair use rationale. Simply saying "promo" is not enough information. If you're aware of other images that you or others have uploaded that are copyright-infringing without meeting Fair use standards, you can help out by tagging them with all of the necessary information, or further help out at Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use. Thanks. Jkelly 01:51, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry that you feel that I need to be nicer, but I am puzzled by your surety that simply saying "promotional" (tag or no tag) is enough. Please trust me in that if you read Wikipedia:Fair use and Wikipedia:Publicity photos you will see that it isn't. Jkelly 01:59, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Swedish-Canadians

[edit]

I'm puzzled by that as well, but this IP has been putting them up Swedish players on other players as Swedish-Canadians, such as Peter Forsberg and Niklas Sundstrom. I have reverted the obvious ones, and I think I'll do the same with Alfredsson (and did it on Sundin, captain of the greatest team in the world, ha ha ha). Croat Canuck 01:52, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will give you that the Sens are the best team so far... but its the playoffs that matter; you'd better hope they don't face the Leafs in the playoffs. 5 straight anybody? Croat Canuck 01:59, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, you like Ottawa and I like Toronto...However I tell ya, those Kitchener Rangers are 10x better than those Kilrea-whipped Ottawa 67's. I'm sorry to yank your chain, I just love to make fun of other people's favourite teams (as long as their not the same as mine). Croat Canuck 03:52, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I concur, Kilrea is a good coach. So is DeBoer. Both better than Quinn in my opinion. Also the Senator's old goalie is much, much better than the Leaf's old goalie. So I'll give you that. Croat Canuck 04:09, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch! Low blow! Actually, the 1 game I went to wasn't even a Leafs game. It was a Buffalo vs. Philadelphia in one of the last games at the old Buffalo Aud. Probably the best game to go to also, 6-5, bench-clearing brawl, etc... It was great, but it was almost 10 years ago in March, 1996. I do think it is time to go to another game, but who can afford Leafs tickets? Or who can get them? Its much more efficient to watch them on TV. Sundin's better than Alfredsson. Croat Canuck 05:07, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I was like 8 or 9, tagging along with my older brother's hockey team who played an exhibition game at the Aud that afternoon. Sundin is so better than Alfredsson, look at the stats! He also has been around longer, been more consistent, and has never had a bad hairdo. I don't see Alfredsson being talked about for the Hall of Fame. Croat Canuck 05:59, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid this argument would need to be solved by an impartial third party according to Wikipedia rules. I am confident that every impartial user on WikiProject Ice Hockey will say that overall Sundin is a better player than Alfredsson. That's enough for me. Croat Canuck 06:04, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I got 4 words for you: linemates and ice time. I'm sure Alfredsson has been given every chance to play with the great players Ottawa has gotten in the present in past (Spezza and Heatley, c'mon). Sundin's had to play on the same line with the likes of Jonas Hoglund or Mikael Renberg. Never been given a chance to play on a line with skilled players. Also, Quinn for some reason loathes to play Sundin more than 20 minutes a game (ever since he got here!). Meanwhile Alfredsson gets 22, 23 minutes per game. You also reference trophies, what about clutch? Sundin has the record for most career overtime goals, and is always the Leafs best player in the playoffs. Yep, better than Alfredsson. Croat Canuck 06:19, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a miracle that Sundin has gotten 12 consecutive 70-plus point season with the crap around him. Imagine Sundin on a line with Marian Hossa or Dany Heatley, craziness. Internationally too, Sundin has done much more for Sweden in inter. play than Alfredsson can ever dream about. Croat Canuck 06:37, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Two more minutes a game: Give that to Sundin and we're talking about top-3 best players in the NHL. But Hey, I'm sure we can both agree that both of them are much better than Saku Koivu. I hope no Canadians fans read this or we'll have a three-way Scandanavian Captain Slamfest! Croat Canuck 06:43, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hey I love the fact that each Canadian team has a distinguishable face that has been there for a long time (Calgary-Jarome Iginla, Edmonton-Ryan Smyth), tis a golden age for the Canadian hockey teams. But that's besides the point. I wasn't dissing Koivu, but Sundin and Alfredsson ARE better players than him. But I would say that Naslund is below Sundin but above Alfredsson in goodness. After all, Naslund and Sundin have each scored 100+ points before, and Alfredsson has never gotten better than 80. Croat Canuck 07:17, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, because the Big Line has slowed down considerably due to the injuries to Havlat, and then Bochenski. Alfredsson's pace has slowed down a lot. He needs to get 114 points just to tie Sundin's career high... Oh well no matter, Kaberle and McCabe are better than Redden and Chara anyways. Croat Canuck 07:48, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I know Boch and Havl didn't play on Alfredsson's line, but now all the opposing defense has to do is focus on the big line and that in turn produces less points for Alfie. Also, I thought you said screw international play, so Redden's olympic nomination don't matter. Ummm.... who's leading the league in points by a defenseman by far? McCabe. Who's 4th in assists and ahead of Redden in points? Kaberle. Chara's just a big lug. Croat Canuck 08:12, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As it is, we will both probably have to archive just this "discussion" alone, it is has been long. Why don't we just agree that Sundin's better than Alfredsson, and Chadden is better than McKaberle, by the slightest of margins. Croat Canuck 08:18, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well it goes against the rest of the LeafNation, but I'll agree to that. We'll show you in the playoffs where it really matters, instead of the late-night user talk pages on Wikipedia. Croat Canuck 08:24, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your Welcome

[edit]

Your welcome. I found your list my just surfing on to it. Originally I was looking for the proper license / copyright to post for a user created / uploaded photo. I wanted to see which one you used for the Ottawa Civic Centre picture you uploaded. I was interested because I uploaded pictures of the Halifax Metro Centre, Harbour Station and Charlottetown Civic Centre. After doing that I surfed onto your user page and found your list. --FrankCostanza 14:43, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

St./Saint Andrews

[edit]

Hello -- happy new year. I have a bit of a question for you. I see that back in September you moved the St. Andrews, New Brunswick article to Saint Andrews, New Brunswick. I'm a little perplexed, because it looks to me like the article, and the Town's website, indicate that it is spelled "St. Andrews" not "Saint Andrews" (St. and Saint not necessarily being interchangeable). I'm assuming that I am missing something obvious here, so if you could point me in the direction of why the change was made, that would be great. Thanks. Skeezix1000 22:26, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's good enough for Statscan, it's good enough for me. Thanks! Skeezix1000 02:15, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DeBoer/Kilrea

[edit]

Ooh the Senators are struggling while the Leafs are on a winning streak of how long?... Nah I'm just kidding, wouldn't want to start that up again. But whatever you do, do not add the list of players that Kilrea has coached into the NHL onto his page like I did on the Peter DeBoer page, or Wikipedia would have a huge meltdown. Likewise do not post his coaching statistics or the same thing would happen as I mentioned in the last statement. This is just a warning for the well-being of Wikipedia. Croat Canuck 06:06, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oy, a threat? I'm not a very threatening person. Croat Canuck 06:32, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that was a good game, I felt bad for the Russian goalie because this is a second whack at Canada and he failed again and his team didn't do much in front of him. As McGuire said, he was having a breakdown. Boy, Pogge looks good, so does Rask... gee I don't know what NHL team they belong to. My favorite player from this year was probably Chipchura, with Downie and Staal as runner-ups. Previous favourites from previous tournaments of mine include Mike Richards, Derek Roy and Jordin Tootoo, boy did he hit everything. Croat Canuck 06:40, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you do that your page will be full of Leaf logos and pictures of Kylie Minogue covered up in a parka! Have you by chance happened to dabble in this heated argument on both the Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr Talk pages? They are just crazy its RGTraynor against two other users and they are just going at it, I've been trying to keep it civil as sort of mediator but boy, there is a bit of anger being passed around. Croat Canuck 06:55, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You surpise me sometimes Earl Andrew... I thought you would have said Laurie Boschman because, well, the Senators history don't date back that far. You should check out one of my new userboxes, it goes along with our agree to disagree agreement. Croat Canuck 07:14, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
DANG YOU EARL ANDREW! YOU BARELY BEAT ME ON TAKING THAT SIGNATURE OFF THE TUUKKA RASK ARTICLE!... oh sorry, no yelling... I think i Just woke someone up. Croat Canuck 07:28, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well I just think it was a little rude to cut in front of me there while we were having a semi-polite conversation. Croat Canuck 07:38, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What's really freaky is that they had another goalie and they didn't play him... You think Patrick Roy had it bad in Montreal? Geesh... Man, I am on fire with my userboxes today. Croat Canuck 08:01, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, Tugnutt was with the Nordiques when he stopped 70 of 73 shots in a 3-3 tie. Sam

LoPresti has the record I think with 80 saves in a game, and I think he won 3-2, this was back in the 40's... and that was all unsourced, straight from my brain. What a databank of hockey knowledge I have, hee hee hee. Croat Canuck 08:12, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alright I dug out my NHL Official Guide $ Record Book, and it was 83 shots the Boston Bruins got on March 4, 1941 against the Chicago Blackhawks, and Boston won 3-2. But it didn't say who the goalie was so I dug out my NHL Players Ultimate A-Z Guide by Andrew Podnieks (you want the ISBN too? lol) and comfirmed it was Sam LoPresti. This LoPresti guy also enlisted in the US Navy during WWII, and spent 42 days on a lifeboat before being saved. Hmm... interesting. Also I did confirm the Tugnutt thing, and that happened in March 21, 1991 also against the Boston Bruins. In fact Boston has 3 of the top 4 places for most shots in a game. Speaking of records, how the heck did you find the time to get so many edits? Probably from stealing edits from guys like me, eh? Croat Canuck 08:23, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I mean I think I'm cranking a devilish pace and then hiyo! Croat Canuck 08:26, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think Jimbo Wales should pay for you University with all the contributions you've made... A Wiki-Scholarship! Croat Canuck 08:32, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I actually made some userboxes on that topic of bandwidth theft and Jimmy Wales chasing me with henchmen... ay do your toilets flush clockwise in Ottawa, mate? Something in the water that causes you guys to go Wiki-Crazy? Croat Canuck 08:43, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Why does everybody assume I'm from Kitchener? Geesh, a city boy I ain't. Check the userboxes, they'll tell you (and a lot more unfortunately), although I am more proud that I grew up in Wellesley than the place I am living in now. That SimonP's userpage is kind of bland for a guy who is almost at 100,000 freaking edits, thats just insane. Oh well at least he's Canadian. Croat Canuck 08:48, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but enough of a difference that if they were in the correct location, they could be in separate hemispheres. I'm signing off, keep on trucking! Croat Canuck 08:54, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in 2006 Canadian Election Page

[edit]

Hi,

I saw your comments about the 2006 election figures having huge errors, could we tag it appropriately so no one takes that information for true in the future? I'm not sure what to tag it with nor do I know anything about the figures. Thanks Sinblox 22:28, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

== You are a vandal who has no respect for correct information. Your continual reverts of correct modifications are annoying and a disgrace to wikipedia. Like you, I am a Carleton student. I work for the government. I respect fact, and try to make wikipedia better. You are disrespectful, and are hell-bent on what you 'think' to be correct, offering no true basis for your reverts. This is highly disappointing to me. I suggest you keep a more open mind to what may be errors on your part. I respect everyone, and everyone's opinions. I do not respect those who continually shut out others, and trample on the truth... Intothedark

Election Template

[edit]

Hey, I saw that you created the CanElec6 and that is all good. However, is it really necessary? I have done quite a few of them, and residence doesn't seem that important when you just want the straight facts. Anyway, my real concern is that when you switch the template to CanTemp6, could you fix the box so that the bottom three boxes are colspan='4'? The reason is because it really messes up the way the information is presented. Cheers --Omnieiunium 06:50, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Laws on Homosexuality Map

[edit]

Hey, so it says you are the creator of Image:Laws on homosexuality.PNG in the copyright info box. It's a great map, but there's a small error in it. The maps shows South Africa as having same-sex marriage, which is not true. While there was a court ruling in South Africa requiring same-sex marriage to be legalized, it has yet to come in to force. If you weren't the one to make the change, no problem, but it would be great if someone could correct it. I would do it myself, but i don't have any image editing software. NoIdeaNick 01:52, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I think I'll do that. NoIdeaNick 02:24, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That Map is out of date. YOu can have same-sex marriages in United Kingdom, Venezuela and Denmark is't marked for same sex marriage as that country is the first one to legalize it! regards Allie

Any suggestion on what to do with User:Orthodoxe

[edit]

After losing some recent arguements on the Montreal West, Quebec page, trying to rename everything to Montréal-Ouest, Quebec, he has gone and moved the Dieu et mon droit page to God and my right to make some kind of perverse point. Looking at his recent contributions it also looks like he renamed the Martin Luther King III page to Martin Luther King, son! This is starting to be vandalism. I'm not as familiar with process here as you. Do you have any suggestions? Nfitz 00:13, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Although I hate it when people tag my stuff for deletion I am kinda tempted to in this case but wanted to run it by you first. You uploaded the image Image:Coppss.jpg as your own creation and release it into public domain. I just notice, though, that it is the same image as the one on her parlaiment bio. When I saw you user name I though it was entirely possible that you are in fact Andy Schott the creator of this work. If that is the case then im sorry to bother you (although I suggest that you add a little more info to its description to avoid this kinda mistake in the future). If you aren't Andy Schott then I took a couple of photos of her when she delivered an alumni speech at the University of Western Ontario a while ago which might do for her page. Please respond to this on my talk page. thanks Dowew 06:59, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is this going to be a big consensus building operation? Where should I discuss the greens greenynish?--Colle 05:09, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On another matter

[edit]

You're probably the right person to ask about this ...

Have you seen any formal clarification as to whether incumbents defeated in this week's election should be listed as MPs until 2005, or 2006? The parl.gc.ca site suggests the former, counter-intuitive though that may seem. CJCurrie 02:36, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But, for succession boxes, I'd suggest using 2006.

That was my initial inclination, but I changed my mind after reviewing the parl.gc.ca site. As a matter of precedent, incumbent MPs from 1979 who lost their seats in January 1980 are listed as MPs "to 1979".

The parliamentary site isn't always accurate, but I'm inclined to trust them on this one (barring information to the contrary).

In earlier times, it was acknowledged that there were no "Members of Parliament" between elections. I'm not certain there's ever been formal or legal clarification on the point for the modern political scene. CJCurrie 02:59, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huh?

[edit]

Hello! I am most curious (puzzled, actually): is there a specific reason why you resurrected this now obsolete template/redirect? I nixed it/nominated it for deletion precisely because it was inconsistent and redundant with the other provincial/territorial templates (e.g., {{ON}}). E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 06:27, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TY. That's very odd, because I took explicit care to persue the 'What links here' for the template and change them over before nominating it for oblivion ... at least I believe I did. If you don't object, I'm going to change it over to {{BC}}, which no longer applies to Boston College (egoists!).
Do you know if there are any others? If there's nothing else, I'll tag it again for oblivion. This is the sort of thing that's analogous to an unpaid bill: I need to get rid of it for sanity. :) Merci! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 06:34, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OC Turnout

I got the 2nd highest claim from the citizen [1] when I do a quick check at elections.ca of the 5 ridings with ottawa in their name, OC had the most votes cast with 66,950. Hey Earl, an editor has been changing the order of the results of an election in riding article from the current standard (ordered by the number of votes the candidates received) to alphabetical order. I think we should develop a consensus. Given your past interest in these articles, your comments would be welcome at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada/Election results. About page with Active number of troops

[edit]

I read your comments about that page.

I am also very frustrated.

I have been working on the Military of Pakistan, Pakistan Army and History of Pakistan Army page and each time I have to change info on those pages to coincide with changes on this page.

I think this page should be retitled and remade with proper sub-heading.

Here is a sample of what I have created.

Tell me what you think.

Also, we need to create sub-pages where each country is sorted by the size of each individual service. Such as countries with the largest armies, etc.

Rank Nation Army Navy Air Force Marines Paramilitary Forces Other TOTAL Armed Forces per
thousand citizens
3 United States United States 500,203 375,521 358,612 176,202 National Guard # 40,151 (US Coast Guard) 1,427,000 4.79
7 Pakistan Pakistan 620,000 27,000 65,000 0 288,000 0 1,000,000 6.23

Active troops list

[edit]

The article needs a complete rewrite. I pretty sure that Indian Armed Forces is the second largest after PRC but the article lists India as the largest army. Merc2k's version seems good but the figures need to be backed by verfiable sources. --Deepak|वार्ता 18:00, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2006 Winter Olympics

[edit]

Please stop taking out 9th and 10th place finishes. 10 is a better number than 8, and consistency really doesn't matter. If it's such a big deal, I edited the 2002 Olympics one so that it has Top 10. Besides, there are so many differences between the 2002, 2004 and 2006 pages that having top 10 rather than top 8 really shouldn't matter.

Since you care about consistency so much, why don't you spend a lot of time to make all 3 articles just like eachother? ~Scorpion0422

This image is from where? -- user:zanimum

I have a question about the PD copyright claim on Image:Censusdivisions.PNG. Another user User:Cadillac has use dit as a basis to produce a range of maps. In trying to figure out the copyright status of his maps, I found that your map doesn't clearly state the PD status of the map. Where was the original government map found and why did you think it was a free image. --Martyman-(talk) 03:18, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can not use a copyrighted work as a basis for a derivative work. My understanding is that copyright does not work that way. If it was in the public domain and you do enough changes you can claim copyright on it, but if it was copyrighted to begin with you shouldn't use it. On the other hand using a government map to trace the outlines into a new file which you then use to create a new map would be fine, if that is what you mean. I am going to choose to believe that that is what you have done. ;). --Martyman-(talk) 07:54, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature

[edit]

Hi!

I've noticed you through your contributions on curling related articles. Thanks for all your work on that subject.

I see you're using the logo of the NDP in your signature (Image:Ndpsmall.jpg). That image isn't licensed for use on Wikipedia, so we're just claiming Fair use and that really only extends to uses in articles which directly relate to its subject. Your use of it in your signature doesn't really fit with that purpose. It's also not really related to the project to wear your political affiliation on your sleeve like that. Would you consider changing it? Thanks!

kmccoy (talk) 04:16, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is an excellent choice for a new signature icon! Do you mind if, at some point, I have an automated editing thingy (i.e., a bot of some sort) replace the NDP image with the stone image in the signatures that you've already placed?

Reform

[edit]

Wikipedia began as an open effort to create an encyclopedia of the people, by the people, for the people. Sadly, its bureaucracy has put an end to those goals. To this end, we must promote a peaceful revolution to reform it. We must eliminate the undue influence of certain people and remake Wikipedia as a people's encyclopedia. We, the reformers, are led by TJWhite who endured only briefly before suffering an indefinite block. Visit his user page to see our ideology, roughly outlined. I for one do not condone his call to vandalism. Instead, by using the power of the people, we can reform wikipedia. Join us to recreate an encyclopedia where all are equal; an encyclopedia that does not strive to become Brittannica, but rather seeks to be a one of kind encyclopedia for all of the people of the world. Please pass this message in some form to as many people as you can. Secondly, petition for the unblock of TJWhite, the one who began our glorious movement. Finally, link to his page from your user page and express your sentiments for reform on your page. Thank You, fellow wikipedians. LaRevolution 15:36, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Curling tables

[edit]

I noticed that you have reverted my edit of the curling tables at 2006 Scott Tournament of Hearts, citing prior World Championship articles. However, existing Wikipedia conventions on data tables suggest that the edited table form which is used in Curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics is to be used. This form also reflects similar tables used in other sports. Please take this into consideration before making any further changes into the teams tables. kelvSYC 19:41, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to your response on my talk page: I am referring to table conventions in general. Your format lacks the semantic ease-of-use factor that we may need in the future - the usage of <br/> tags are not recommended, and tabular data are better suited in data tables. The colors are largely irrelevent and of no practical use. Furthermore, with my views, it looks ugly and takes up too much space (the entire table can be seen without scrolling with my table, while with yours I have to scroll). All in all, good web design guidelines state that layout tables are to be avoided. kelvSYC 20:58, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again, the problem is that the tables are not compact, and does not optimally express semantic value. Just to make another example, which one is better, this table:

Dominik Hasek Ray Emery
Paradubice, Czech Republic

Number 39, catches left
Acquired 2004
Salary: $1,520,000

Cayuga, Ontario

Number 1, catches left
Acquired 2001
Salary: $450,000

... or the one that is actually in Ottawa Senators? I'm partial to the latter.

Another problem is that it is not scalable. It is a considerable pain if we were to augment the above table with, say, the list of Sens forwards and defensemen. There is also the issue of the ability to linearize the table for those of us who access Wikipedia from a text device or through a hearing device. Using the above table, one would assume that Emery and not Hasek would be from the Czech Republic with a hearing device, for instance.

On the comment of the relevance of colors: colors are actually very distracting. In a lot of places we limit ourselves to only one or two colors: for example, 2005-06 NHL season has only a green to tell us which teams are in playoff position and which aren't. If you were to replace the row colors with the team colors, even if they were lightened, the result would still be unreadable and look cluttered.

kelvSYC 22:23, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I still vehemently disagree - the site you stated has horrible design in my books (nested tables... ugh). The issue comes down to content semantics and presentation semantics: the way you have it, you put presentation first when content is more important. The general view on good design is that one has to design with content in mind - presentation can be added later. By putting presentation first, you obfuscate the content. My design, however, is simple, elegant, and conformant to other data tables that are used throughout Wikipedia. kelvSYC 22:51, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem in the content design is that it is not apparent on the column associations. Team Canada lies in the same column as Manitoba and Nova Scotia, implying that the rinks have something to do with each other (so Jennifer Jones and Colleen Jones are both Team Canada, right?), which they do not. The rinks are in the same convience only for logical cohesion, which in terms of design is undesirable. With my layout, there is no ambiguity. kelvSYC 23:43, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you think the above is the worst argument, fine. Keep those opinions at the door. We're here for civilized discussion.

However, an audio reader can (and sometimes do) make these kinds of assertions. An audio reader can easily make the mistake of saying that the Harvey rink is both Team Canada and Manitoba, the Jones rink Canada, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia, and the Belisle rink under Canada, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Quebec, just because all are in the same column. Maybe it is the case that anyone can read it out and see which rink is associated with which team, but for those of us who use the internet without the luxury of visuals, life is often quite difficult.

Then there is also those of us who surf without tables. The way I have it, you can still tell easily who's playing what role on which team. With yours, we have "Team Canada", "Alberta", "British Columbia", "St. Vital Curling Club, Winnipeg...", "Saville Centre Curling Club, Edmonton", etc. It takes quite a bit to see that the Jones rink represents Team Canada, the King rink represents Alberta, etc. It's even harder to see that Gagnier is the third for NWT/Y who throws skip stones, or that Hollands is the lead for Quebec. Now, imagine that you put six teams in one row instead of three. We could probably tell that Andrea Kelly was a skip, but could we easily tell which rink she belonged to? Not as easily compared to the way I have it.

Couchiching Terriers of the OPJHL

Ok... I looked at a map... they are located on Rama Road on the edge of Lake Couchiching. Is there a town or village actually called Rama, Ontario? Because I set up that column specifically for the centre they play out of and have absolutely no clue... I played against them twice when I played for the Durham Huskies... but I have no clue where that arena was. DMighton 21:58, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rama, Ontario is a community just outside of Orillia, Ontario. It's the home of the Chippewas of Mnjikaning First Nation. Their arena is called the "MASK" or 'Mnjikaning Arena Sports Ki' (Ki is an Ojibway word, I think meaning 'land', but I'm not certain on that). It is located at 6145 Rama Road, Rama, Ontario (very close to Casino Rama actually). One of the best on-line sources of info about the arena is The Ramakings Lacrosse team website. In particular, check out the community page and the arena page. I believe the Couchiching Terriers play in the MASK. ColtsScore 13:27, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page playoff system

[edit]

Hey Earl, I've seen many of your edits (particularly since some of our interests overlap--Canada, politics (esp. NDP) and curling are just a few examples) and they've always been very good, especially those pretty maps. I noticed recently that there was no article on the page playoff system, so I wrote one to get it going. However, I don't know that much about curling history and I'm sure there are other things that you could add that would help improve it, possibly up to a DYK level. This would probably be great to do right now, considering the world championships that are going on. So if you want to have a look at it and/or can think of a good DYK line, feel free.

Also, I'm planning on being in Boston the first week of April, so I may wander up to Lowell for the Men's Worlds. I'll try to take some pictures, but if you had any suggestions (specific or general) of free curling (or other?) pictures Wikipedia might benefit from, I'll do my best. OK. I'll move it in a few minutes. I found it yesterday at Havre St. Pierre and moved it to the same but with Quecebc. Perhaps returning the page to Habsfannova's last version and then blocking it until TrulyTory can explain his objections might help. I've been trying to draw his views out, but with little success. Country subdivisions

[edit]

need your help, kind of urgent, someone wants to split the cats and articles of "subdivisons of XY" to "Administatrive divisions of some countries" and "Political divisions of some other countries".

could you maybe vote on Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_April_4#Category:Subdivisions_by_country_to_Category:Political_divisions_by_country (take care, there are actually three votes)

IMO the thing should be taken with more care and discussed on the project page

Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Subnational_entities/Naming#Umbrella_terms

first. It is really is mass rename, since it not only involves the cats and subcates but also lots of articles. As Lorenz pointed out the most important seems to be that we find clear definitions of what the terms mean. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 08:06, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clanwilliam,MB. vs. RM of same name

Hi! I noticed your recent edit on the above topic. I could be wrong but I don't believe that Clanwilliam is even in the Rural Municipality of the same name. In any case, they should/could potentially be two separate articles. Maybe not! Thanks! Stormbay 02:15, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation

[edit]

Hi Earl, I'm fixing disambiguation links that route to the disambiguation page "Medium", and one of the flagged entries is from one of your posts on your user page. It looks like the link is supposed to be to the TV show "Medium" so the link to that would be: Medium . If you would be so kind as to link it to an actual article or just delink it, I would appreciate it. I can take care of it for you, I would just need your permission. What is Up with that?

[edit]

Hey, what is up with you editing my first (and last) political article creation in Harold Albrecht (the one Wiki-notable person I know)? Did I do something wrong? Ha ha, just kidding, I just needed an excuse to gloat over the Leafs 5-1 victory over the Sens on Saturday night (I like to eccentruate the positives). Alfredsson better than Sundin? Ha! Not since the Olympics! Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 03:21, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'm actually not conservative, I'm all over the map with my political views so I couldn't say I am Conservative or Liberal. I myself actually don't like the party politics game, so its all good. And, ahem, Sundin has been on in the top 25 for the last 13 years, I don't think Alfredsson can brag about that, and even saying that Sundin had 79 points this year (and that's with the help of those Sens who knocked him out for those twelve games at the beginning of the season). If you give Sundin those 12 games back, plus the time it took him to get back into form following the injury, AND give him Heatley and Spezza as linemates, Sundin would smoke Alfredsson. By the way, earlier in the season you said Alfredsson would smoke Sundin's career high in points this year? Uh Alfredsson only finished with 103, so he's still 11 points short of Mats' high. Seeing your block on this user I am currently inclined to unblock. The only potential 3RR violation I can see occurred some 24 hours prior to the block being enforced. From the blocking policy "In all cases, blocks are preventative rather than punitive, and serve only to avoid damage to Wikipedia", clearly blocking someone 24 hours after an edit war has finished is not prevantative but punitive. Ottawa Raiders

[edit]

Hey Earl Andrew, I noticed that you created a page back in January for the Ottawa Raiders. I just created an infobox template (Template:NWHL team infobox, ripped off from the NHL infobox) that you might want to include on the page, if you're still keeping up with it. Although I guess the page requires more information before an infobox is necessary. Even the Brampton Thunder page I've put it on needs a little more work before the infobox will really look like it fits. I'm planning on creating pages for all the NWHL teams eventually--perhaps if you're interested, you could help.  OZLAWYER  talk  14:20, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I don't follow the NWHL very closely either--I've never been to a game. Like you and the Raiders, I created the Brampton Thunder page to contribute to knowledge of Brampton, which is an incredibly boring city, but is where I've lived all my life. I just thought about doing the NWHL team pages because, well, they needed to be done. It'll probably be awhile before I get to them, though. Thanks for your interest.  OZLAWYER  talk  12:00, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ridings

[edit]

Earl, just to let you know, I have been preparing election results tables offline for several months now, and am beginning the process of loading these tables into the articles. I have created tables to provide complete results for all federal ridings (current and defunct) up to and including the 2004 election. These tables are pretty basic: candidate name, party, # of votes -- they do not include %s, and the names are in the "LASTNAME, Firstname" format, rather than the more pleasant "Firstname Lastname" format. But they are a start. It will take me several weeks to load these. For obvious reasons, I started with New Brunswick, and will continue with Nova Scotia and then other provinces. Please keep an eye out for errors in my work, and feel free to improve on it. Regards, Ground Zero | t 12:06, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Townships of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo

[edit]

Earl Andrew, I was curious as to wether or not you would mind if I, Tom H., or you, would relocate the townships in Waterloo Region from their current short-named pages (ie. "Wellesley, Ontario") to their official-named pages (ie. "Township of Wellesley" or "Township of Wellesley, Ontario") because I realize that when I had done this before, you had reverted the page back to its previous condition. I would appreciate this very much for when people attempt to access a site on the town of Wellesley (the largest community in the Township of Wellesley) they must always go through the township site. This would also be the same for the comunity of Wilmot in the Township of Wilmot. So if these changes were made, people that were seeking information on the townships would be able to locate the township pages, and they would also be able to find the towns' pages better by simply being taken to "Wellesley, Ontario" (holding intelligence on the community and not the township). I'm familiar with your other work on Wikipedia and am quite impressed. Thank you for your care, concern, and passion in helping to bring knowledge to the masses. I hope you continue your excellent work. Sincerely, Tom. H.

Your signature

[edit]

Hello there, I was wondering if you would please modify your signature to conform to the guidelines laid out at Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. The general guidelines are that signatures shouldn't contain images, they shouldn't contain unnecessary internal links or any external links, and they shouldn't be unnecessarily long in Wiki source. The reasoning for this final bit is that overly long signatures tend to overwhelm the actual comments in edit mode, making it hard to track down and respond to specific comments. You can fix your signature by removing any images and external links, any unnecessary links (like links to Wikipedian organizations, articles, or subpages in userspace), and removing excessive color, font, and formatting code. Thank you. --Cyde↔Weys 21:22, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I created this page as a way to a) stop WikiWoo from adding all the municipalities in Ontario which are census subdivisions and not divisions to List of Ontario census divisions, since he doesn't listen to reason, and b) to try to put some sort of control over his edits which would otherwise have been to create several oddly-named articles containing his anti-regional government POV--I created the list to replace WikiWoo's Single and Double Tier Municipalities fo Ontario (sic). I am perfectly okay with the removal of the page, although I do think there probably should be List articles on Ontario's regional municipalities, counties, and districts. I know there's one on the separated municipalities already. Anyway, my main concern was to try to limit the damage WikiWoo has been causing. JzG and Btball have recently helped out a bit on this front, and Garywill and JChap2007 have been, like me, trying to keep his edits in check (sometimes with little success). Maple Ridge, Ontario

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Maple Ridge, Ontario, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Maple Ridge, Ontario. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.

I did this, as it seems odd to have a disambiguation page that has nothing to disambiguate. ONUnicorn 20:51, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NB regions

[edit]

Earl, I see you've split and changed some of the regions for the upcoming NB election. I think some of the changes you made sense, but FYI the way it was broken down was not done arbitrarily but it is the regions as defined by the electoral boundaries commission [7]. I think in this case it is better for us to stict to regions that are defined by the same people that drew up the ridings so I am going to revert your edits. - Jord 20:40, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding a better image to the article. I noticed though, that the image shows the signage for the intersection of an Ave. (av.) with another Ave. (av.). It might emphasize the bilingualism a bit more if there was, instead, an image showing the signage for the intersection of an Ave. (av.) with a Street (rue). I don't have a digital camera, so I can't download such an image, but if you have time ...

Newfoundland Islands

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you reverted User:AshleyMorton's edit on the List of Canadian islands by population page. I believe AshleyMorton had subtracted the population of a numer of small islands off the coast of Newfoundland, like Fogo Island, Twillingate, etc., not the population of Labrador. You might want to discuss this with him to make sure you are both talking about the same thing. Cheers. Luigizanasi 05:04, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for image information

[edit]

Do you have any furthur information on the creation or source of Image:Bmcpc.PNG? I clean up image description pages and its not clear to me why the image is public domain. Let me know, thanks! Kevin_b_er 21:16, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So are all the maps, that you have User:Earl_Andrew/maps that resemble IMage:Bmcpc.PNG in style created by you and released to PD? Also, if you remember, where'd the maps come from, as they could've been copyrighted. Kevin_b_er 22:12, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, just one more question. The base map (that is, the outlines of the regions presented in the maps), where are they from? I can add that when I go and update the tags for each of those maps so noone can question their freeness. Kevin_b_er 23:48, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Any luck? Just need to know the source of the colorless version of maps. From there I can retag them all properly with full information about their status. FYI, yes, this is annoying to have to do, and I read something you put on ANI around a year ago about confusing image policies. But if I can get where the map without the outlines came from, I can fully tag all these images perfectly. Thanks again :) --Kevin_b_er 05:35, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well crap. That makes them all noncommercial images. Was worried about that. Everything the canadian government publishes is not public domain, unlike the US federal government's work. I'll figure out what the heck to do later. May have to try to remake them all if I can find those maps in PD sources. Kevin_b_er 06:16, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Volpe protection

[edit]

Currently, the dispute is between CJCurrie and I and we have reached an impasse.

Even before you instituted protection, he has stated that he has "said everything" and is trying to bring closure to the debate, so he has not bothered to answer my last few posts. The problem is that he has no incentive to get back to the table if you keep the page protected...unless you alternate between my version and his.

Perhaps a true third party mediator, that both of us agree upon, is needed. GoldDragon 17:56, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you certain JWL is Jewish? I tried to look this up once, and didn't find anything -- I believe her background is Ukrainian. CJCurrie 19:52, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Her pro-Israel stance isn't unusual for the Manitoba NDP: Pat Martin and Gary Doer hold similar views (and perhaps Bill Blaikie -- I'm not certain). For a variety of reasons, NDPers in Winnipeg tend to be more pro-Israel than those in the rest of the country.

I can remember that she had a strong emotional investment in the disputed Ukrainian election two years ago. (Of course, people can be both Jewish and Ukrainian, so this doesn't automatically prove or disprove anything.) CJCurrie 20:14, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article seems to suggest that she isn't Jewish; I think the CJC would have mentioned it if she were. CJCurrie 20:24, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: Google hits, I don't think it's a good idea to assume a link between being Jewish and supporting Israel. Many of the most vocal critics of Israel within the NDP are themselves Jewish, after all. CJCurrie 20:48, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Derivative highway designations

[edit]

Here is how the Quebec Autoroutes are derivative:

RaccoonFoxTalkStalk 01:43, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that's what the definition is, since many of the roads are incorporated into multiplexes with Autoroutes, and they generally bypass the older roads... They are clearly noticable as derivative roads. Why not include them? :) RaccoonFoxTalkStalk 01:49, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Should i append (add to) the definition to include Quebec Autoroutes? Or even mention their relationship? It seems to still fit the definition, to me... i'd like to hear your input. RaccoonFoxTalkStalk 01:53, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So that means you're open for me to append it (the definition of highway designations) for closely-following routes? RaccoonFoxTalkStalk 01:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's an appropriate definition. It fits it, anyway. Example would be: Road 1 drives along the river. it is later bypassed by Road 101. It's a spur, and a derivative designation. RaccoonFoxTalkStalk 02:02, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CJCurrie 21:57, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. I did make one incorrect statement about chronological order (I missed "2005").

You are wrong about "no poll results being worthless". There is absolutely no perspective, proof of fairness or gauge of accuracy (MOE) to the stats provided in the 8/25 poll. For example, this "poll" could have been taken very informally by one biased reporter using only a very tiny group of his friends (all in the same race and socio-economic group) around the office. Who would know? Without the name of a respected polling firm attached to them to give them an "air of credibility", these stats are 100% worthless and should not be listed.

If you want to split up the "other" column to add Kilrea, be my guest. I had considered that myself.

It is important to know the full options available to those polled (for example, were the smaller candidates prompted as an option?). It affects all of the other percentages. Simplifying the symbols key at the bottom of the chart to make several things "—" results in things being too vague and, in a small but definite way, inaccurate. For example, a — under "other/non runners" could mean that we don't know the exact number or that the names were not prompted at all (which would certainly affect the percentages the other candidate's received).

Sorry, but I'm going to extra picky about any edits to this chart because; 1) I know something about polling, and 2) I was the one who created this chart and I took great effort to make it 100% accurate to each polls' question/responses.

I'll let you fix it up now if you want, but I'd suggest just using my original template and adding a Kilrea column and the one other Decima poll if you want. Wolfchild 06:05, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. I just read your bio ("I currently work for Ekos Research Associates as a telephone interviewer"). lol. You must know what I am talking about. Wolfchild 06:15, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've made some changes to incorporate a Kilrea column and the Decima poll. Check it out. It's a bit busy, but it's also 100% accurate to the polling data which is more important.

I agree the other poll looks about right, but it still lacks any proof of accuracy or credibility. Sadly, unqualified numbers being printed in a newspaper means nothing these days as many reporters don't do their job properly. For example, the Toronto Star recently wrote about "the only male candidate" in a specific race when, in fact, 4 of the 7 already registered candidates were male. For all we know, this reporter was misquoting another poll that is already represented in this graph. There's a number of polls in the graph anyway, so one more isn't really needed to get a clear-ish picture of the race.

You are right about Toronto polls in that a graph showing 38 candidates would be impractical. However, as far as I know, the stats don't even exist to make such a graph. I've never seen a polling firm "prompt poll" all of the individual candidates in Toronto like some of them do for the smaller Ottawa mayoralty race. Wolfchild 19:21, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I usually contribute to the Embrun, Ontario article, and the WikiProject: Wikiproject Prescott-Russell. Image tags

[edit]

Hi, I'm very concerned about your edits. You've tagged so many images that it will have a large impact on Wikipedia's coverage of Canadian politicians. Why can't we replace these images as we get pictures to replace them with? That will save a lot of trouble, considering how much work people have put in to uploading these photos. -- Earl Andrew - talk 23:00, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The point is that it's believed (and I agree) that the use of an unfree image in the article give editors less motivation to produce a free picture than the absence of images. So, these articles are much better off to have no photo than to have a fair use photo. --Abu Badali 23:06, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. As Wikipedians, we are told to be bold, and so for a bold encyclopedia, and for a complete encyclopedia, we should have all of our MPs at least with pictures. There have been people replacing the photos with ones they took, but it is a slow process, but in the mean time, photos should still be on their pages. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:42, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Using an unfree image is not to be bold, it's to be lazy. These images should not stay. Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #1 cleary says that such images are not acceptable. Jimbo himself has stated that in such cases, it's better to have no picture at all than to have a non-free one. --Abu Badali 10:02, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ndpsmall.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Problems with images

[edit]

First of all, let me say thank you for providing public domain images for Jane Scharf and Larry O'Brien (businessman). I wish more Wikipedians would do what you did and request free images from subjects like this. It sometimes works! Thank you.

But there's a problem with some of the other photos you keep re-uploading. As you know, these photos were deleted in-process: someone tagged them with {{replaceable fair use}}, and after 7 days they were deleted by a different admin. You might disagree with the process, but they were deleted in process. General criterion #4 in Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion says that such re-uploads may be speedily deleted by any admin. I know you're an admin too, and the last thing I want is a wheel war. The appropriate way to deal with the situation would be for you to go to Wikipedia:Deletion review.

I know we disagree on our fair-use guidelines. A non-free photo of a living person, used to show what a person looks like on Wikipedia, is not allowed. The fact that no free replacement exists at present is not a reason to keep the non-free image -- this is according to FUC#1, FUC counterexample #8, Jimbo Wales, and the Wikimedia foundation. This isn't just my opinion; this is Wikipedia policy. If you disagree with it, you can try to change that policy. But we're admins. We should be above violating policies because we don't like them.

Lastly, I deeply resent being called an "image nazi". It's hurtful and offensive. Please remember: no personal attacks.

All the best, – Quadell (talk) (random) 05:06, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the Eastern Ontario Portal, they state that Embrun has plans for an International Hockey School. The town did talk about it about 4 years ago or so, but no plans had been made, or anything like that. Where is their proof? Are they aloud to write that Embrun has plans, when they don't even know? I was wondering if you could look into that for me. Now you are my go-to guy.

I am requesting that Detroit Jr. Red Wings and Montreal Jr. Canadiens be moved to their respective non-abbreviated titles as Detroit Junior Red Wings and Montreal Junior Canadiens as per naming conventions. Would you be able to help? Thanks. Flibirigit 20:18, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks Earl Andrew :-) Flibirigit 19:48, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re:These guys deleting all your images

[edit]

I just want to say I think it's awful that these guys "Abu Badali" and "Quadell" think they can just go and quietly undo all your hard work. I'm not an admin and I don't really know about these things, but there must be some way to stop this from happening. Could we make a Request for Comment page on this issue? Then they might have to agree to a moratorium on deletions of your images while the discussion is ongoing. If I can be of any help in this please let me know, these two guys don't control Wikipedia. - Mcasey666 18:54, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New RFC

Mayoral endorsements

[edit]

In terms of public endorsements you're missing Diane Holmes, John Godfrey, Michael Cassidy, and Peggy Feltmate for Munter; and Maria McRae, Bob Monette and Clive Doucet for Chiarelli. For O'Brien I'm not certain O'Connor has come out publicly in support of him. He does have the support of a former Kanata mayor Merle Nicholds. - SimonP 00:47, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Earl Andrew

[edit]

Thank you for removing the prod tag I added to Trim Road (Ottawa). I apologise for forgetting that being able to asssrt the encyclopaedic value (or shortcomings) of an Ottawa-related article can only be done if you're from Ottawa. Accordingly, I have taken the article to AFD, to seek clarification on this groundbreaking idea. Regards, Proto::type 09:48, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you look over the controversy here? CJCurrie 05:08, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's strange, I never made those edits. It must be a glitch in the system. I dont copy stuff at all. -- Earl Andrew - talk 05:36, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it seems very odd. It was a long time ago too. Maybe there was some corruption in the history database. Anyway, it is reverted now. So unless the CPC-ML also want it purged from the edit history, there is nothing more to say. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 09:27, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, it seems to be material first added by an anon IP, then deleted, then restored under your name. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 10:23, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering why you reverted Darren Lee's changing of Lambton's county seat to Plympton-Wyoming. Since Wyoming no longer exists, I wonder how it can still be the county seat.  OzLawyer / talk  16:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also suggest the county seat for Haliburton, Ontario be changed from Minden to Minden Hills. The website for that township uses the terms interchangeably, with Minden being the commonly used name, Minden Hills being the proper name. I moved the article from Minden to Minden Hills. While I understand that for single-tier municipalities the place listed as the seat (if it even needs to be listed) has to be a local community since there are no other municipalities to name, in a county with several municipalities, a proper municipality should be listed. That the website of Lambton county says their offices are in Wyoming isn't evidence of the "officialness" of that place being the county seat (if there's even such a thing)—it is simply an internal designation of placement within Plympton-Wyoming.  OzLawyer / talk  16:48, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think the opposite—I think an actual municipality should be listed since it's a real "something" whereas community names (and mailing addresses) are highly mutable (there are no proper boundaries for such places). As an example of why this should be, note that the Region of Peel's headquarters are located in the "Bramalea" part of Brampton (and most people in that area use "Bramalea" as their postal address—although, granted, I don't think the region itself uses "Bramalea" in its postal address), but you wouldn't think of changing the seat to Bramalea, would you?  OzLawyer / talk  17:06, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Proper sourcing does present somewhat of a problem, but at the same time, they're not actually claiming that "Wyoming" is the "seat" of Lambton county. They state that the address of the "Administration Building" is in Wyoming. The whole idea of a "seat" seems to be original research itself!

Hello Earl. The office is pretty much shut down now, and I actually have your book of maps. We should get toghether sometime and discuss the results, and I can give you back your map book. - SimonP 19:14, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alta Vista ward was one of one of the few pleasant surprises on e-night. I'm unfortunetaly going to London for the by-election later this week, so you might need to wait until next week to get your book back. - SimonP 19:25, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be back Tuesday. - SimonP 19:38, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:HILL.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:HILL.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Sherool (talk) 13:04, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

Recently you reverted my edits explaining how a number of images were not replacable and told me to follow proper guidelines. I then progressed to opening up a discussion on a talk page of one of the articles to open up debate. The image was then DELETED within 24 hours. This is incredibly sneaky, and frustrating for people like me who are trying to play by these new rules. I would reccomend that next time this happens you do not revert unless the person refuses to discuss the matter, because images (and their talk pages) could get deleted in the time it takes for a discussion to occur. We are trying to make Wikipedia a better place, but if actions such as these continue to happen, a lot of good hard working Wikipedians may become too frustrated to continue, at the projects integrity will suffer. Now I will have to go through all the trouble of re-uploading the images, and then having to debate them once again when one of you warn me about re-uploading deleted images! -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:14, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not re-upload the images, or they will be speedy deleted per WP:CSD#G4. You should use Wikipedia:Deletion review for that. I don't know which images you're talking about and would be interested in the specifics. --Abu Badali 19:19, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just to let you know I've just tagged Image:Anettenorberg-sweden.jpg as replaceable. For what I can see, this is a picture of a group of living people. A free alternative could be created by repeating this image, or by asking this one to be freely licensed, or by making a collage of (to be produced?) free images of the individuals. --Abu Badali 19:22, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The images that were deleted were similar images. Here is why they are not replacable (including the one you just tagged as being so.) They are promotional images depicting the team for a past event. The event is in the past. We can no longer aquire images from a past event. Therefore they are not replacable. The image is being used for an article profiling this past event. We cannot replace the picture with a newer one, because it would not make sense to use a photo from 2006-07 for an event from 2005-06. We have already determined with Image:Bobrae-premier.jpg that photos of living persons from the past are not replacable. -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:27, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All pictures show past events. What we need to take into account is what part of information contained in the picture is essential information to the article. If I recall correctly, these where images of athletes, just showing their faces. This is not an "event" in my interpretation of the word. Anyway, this is the kind of discussion we should have had in the image's talk page (instead of removing the tag), and now, this is the discussion we should have in WP:Deletion review, so that others could participate. --Abu Badali 19:40, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had opened a discussion, but the image was deleted before anyone could put any input in. That's the problem with the method that is being used, and is something I would like to see addressed. But anyways, these images are of curling teams, and curling teams change over time. Think of it this way. If we had a picture of the 1995-96 Ottawa Senators, would you put it up for deletion saying it was replacable? Certainly not! You cannot replace an image of a team from a past season. Curling is much the same. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:05, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Considering that we should keep unfree images to a minimum (and I hope you agree with that), is it really necessary to have a picture showing the whole team (or congress) together? It's surely nice-to-have, but hardly essential information. --Abu Badali 20:09, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'd say it is essential to illustrate the people involved in an event. The images can also be used to show the evolution of a team over the time, and therefore can be used in the historical context. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:23, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, we could use (a collection of) different image to "illustrate the people involved in an event". As for "the evolution of a team over the time", I think we could not only do that we free image, but also with no image at all. --Abu Badali 20:31, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. How are we supposed to know what a team looked like if we don't have a picture of them? -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:40, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Considering we badly need to, with a collation of free images--Abu Badali 20:42, 27 November 2006 (UTC).[reply]
