Why can't I edit some particular pages?
Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them. If this is not the case, you may have been blocked or your IP address caught up in a range block.
Where can I experiment with editing Wikipedia?
Use the main sandbox or create your own personal sandbox to experiment.
How do I create an article?
See how to create your first article, then use the Article Wizard to create one, and add references to the article as explained below.
How do I create citations?
  1. Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
  2. Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
  3. In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
  4. Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
  5. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like <ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>, copy the whole thing).
  6. In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
  7. If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:

@Eewilson: You're right, it actually doesn't seem too bad. I have been using visual editing to make my edits because source editing looked a bit intimidating as a new user.  :). I also finally got the chance to look at the link (thank you) and I had a few questions for clarification to make sure I am understanding it correctly. Once I add the short form footnote, do I also add the appropriate markup information in the references section? I also noticed that the references section is organized alphabetically, is this done automatically or would I have to add the markup information at the correct 'spot' alphabetically? THANK YOU!! Eucalyptusmint Hi again! So glad you are looking at this. I have a software engineering background so wiki markup looks normal to me :).
The {{Cite web}} template in the section headed References does need to be alphabetical (and with an asterisk in front of it so it will be a part of the bulleted list). Usually that's by author, then by date. If you don't have an author, use the title. With GoBotany (I think I remember that's what you are using for yours), you can use Native Plant Trust as the author with n.d. as the date. If you don't want to use an author (or there isn't one), then you will need to use the ref parameter as a part of the citation definition (which I have actually not used yet but am sure I will soon because I have some reference cleanup to do in some articles). The instructions tell you how to do that.
If you have an author and a date, the wiki backend parses it automatically into its own citation that looks like this Native Plant Trust n.d. and places it in the Citations section (which could be called anything, but I personally like "Citations") and is identified by the Reflist template in that section. That will be a wikilink which should then go to the full reference in the References section.
Your sfn call where you need the citation would be {{sfn|Native Plant Trust|n.d.}}.
If you haven't already done so, use your Sandbox subpage to play around with and test things before you put them in any articles. A better Brahma lead

Hey GoutComplex, thanks for reaching out. So the purpose of the lead is to summarize the article. It isn't a place where new information is introduced, that's usually done in the body of the article where it might best fit. Have you gotten a chance to read through the WP:LEAD policy? Also, upon closer look, there are a few things I'd have to disagree with regarding the information you'd like to include. The info that he's also been depicted as female is incorrect. That's an entirely different theology that's part of devi theology and not applicable here. Also the focus of this article is the Vedic god brahma and not the metaphysical concept brahman, so not sure why it's mentioned that way here [1], may need a more reliable source than khan academy. To be clear, I don't have a problem with adding local names of flora but it should be done so by providing references to reliable sources per Wikipedia policy. And you're absolutely right, just because I edit Wikipedia doesn't mean I know everything, nor is that my intention. I reverted your edits out of good faith because they didn't adhere to Wikipedia's core policies such as verifiability and no original research, but we can discuss this further on the article's talk page. Help with Wikipedia Policies

Hello,

You recently had an interaction with user_talk:Fostera12.

I did too, and I find hostile editing discouraging, and so I looked at his edits, and I noticed that he was banned for incivility and canvassing.[1] Since the expiration of his block, each and every of his edits on discussion pages[2] have been hostile and/or in all caps, and he was suspected of canvassing again at Venkateswara.[3]

I don't know how to raise this issue with the committee/forum/process that took disciplinary action the first time, so I'm posting here and on other pages because you look like a more senior/experienced editor. Do you mind doing whatever is supposed to be done to have a review of these actions?

Hello DenverCoder19 thanks for reaching out. Yes, I did interact with them briefly on the Venkateswara page. It's unfortunate to see that the editor continues to be disruptive despite warnings and blocks, clearly they're WP:NOTHERE. Here's one resource you can further look into that highlights the different ways to escalate as appropriate: WP:DDE. Additionally, you can always post at WP:ANB if you continue to have such interactions with them (and looks like that's where the issue has been raised in the past, several times). Have you reached out to some of the other editors that have interacted with them more frequently? Based on the diffs you linked they look like more senior editors than myself and can also be of help. Undoing revert

Thanks for editing the Shalimar Bagh, Srinagar. I have reverted your edits since proper and verifiable citations to open resources (as done across thousands of pages on Wikipedia) has been provided. While I am sure your edit was in good faith, it was unnecessary and deprived the page of information that would have added to the value of it. As a Wikipedia editor it is my belief that supplying more information to pages is why Wikipedia stands. Otherwise, it would just be another paywall-bound encyclopaedia. Most definitely, I also think that being able to constantly add info to the articles and make them better is one of the beauties of this encyclopedia. However, based on Wikipedia policies, it's important to ensure that the content that's being added is verifiable, accurate and supported by reliable sources. Hello Narayanan Iyengar, I removed the information because it's largely unsourced and not written in an encyclopedic manner (as I mentioned in my edit summary). Simply adding the portraits to the article isn't enough to say that the information is factual. Per WP:RS, wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources. And per WP:V content is determined by previously published information rather than editors' beliefs, opinions, or experiences. Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
