Pedro Muñoz (Chilean footballer)

Happy New Years and hope you had a great holiday break!

Also, any chance you can merge Pedro Muñoz (Chilean footballer) into Pedro Emiliano Muñoz, with the title "Pedro Muñoz (Chilean footballer)". They are duplicate pages that have been around for years now. Cheers!--Ortizesp (talk) 03:38, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

No, their histories are parallel. You just need to redirect one to the other. GiantSnowman 18:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Date format changes

Hi, I'm confused by your recent edit to William Bronston which changed the date format in the references only. Consistency is only required in the body of the article and I don't believe it's helpful to change the date format for the references away from YYYY-MM-DD without any real reason. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 19:14, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Which dates remain unchanged in the body? I cannot see anything. The script should change everything. GiantSnowman 19:18, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
That's my confusion. As far as I'm aware, there's no requirement or need for the date format in the references to be aligned with that in the body. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 19:19, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
It's standard per MOS:DATEFORMAT, certainly a lot more easily readable than YYYY-MM-DD. GiantSnowman 19:25, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I do not see that anywhere in the text there, in fact it states that the YYYY-MM-DD date format is perfectly acceptable in the references section. Is there a specific quote or section you could point me towards that says otherwise? Otherwise this undiscussed change only serves to be disruptive. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 19:47, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Under the 'Formats' section, it details the YYYY-MM-DD format as to be used "Only in limited situations where brevity is helpful", and states "By default, Wikipedia does not abbreviate dates. Use a consistent citation style within any one article." Only very, very limited articles use YYYY-MM-DD, why should this? Accusations of disruption are entirely bad faith and unfounded. GiantSnowman 21:56, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
To be very clear, I'm not accusing you of being disruptive, I'm describing the undiscussed change as disruptive. The section specifically states that situations where brevity is helpful include tables, infoboxes, [and] references so that's a moot point. No part of the guidelines discourages the use of YYYY-MM-DD dates in the reference section and I disagree with your assertion that YYYY-MM-DD is somehow more difficult to read.
In addition, WP:CITEVAR states that Where Wikipedia does not mandate a specific [date] style, editors should not attempt to convert Wikipedia to their own preferred style, nor should they edit articles for the sole purpose of converting them to their preferred style, or removing examples of, or references to, styles which they dislike. and that ...it is normal practice to defer to the style used by the first major contributor or adopted by the consensus of editors already working on the page, unless a change in consensus has been achieved. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 22:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
You have not answered my question about why this is needed. GiantSnowman 11:54, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

ARCA resolved by motion

Hi GiantSnowman,

The ARCA you filed has been resolved by motion as follows:

Remedy 1.2 of the GiantSnowman case ("GiantSnowman admonished and placed under review") is amended to read as follows:

1.2) GiantSnowman is admonished for overuse of the rollback and blocking functions, and reminded to "lead by example" and "strive to model appropriate standards of courtesy"; to "respond promptly and civilly to queries about their Wikipedia-related conduct and administrative actions and to justify them when needed"; to not use admin tools in "cases in which they have been involved" including "conflicts with an editor" and "disputes on topics"; to "treat newcomers with kindness and patience"; and to apply these principles in all interactions with all editors.

With the exception of obvious vandalism or obvious violations of the policy on biographies of living persons:

  • GiantSnowman is prohibited from reverting another editor's contribution without providing an explanation in the edit summary. Default edit summaries provided by MediaWiki or user scripts are not sufficient for the purpose of this restriction. For the avoidance of doubt, use of MediaWiki rollback with an edit summary via a user script such as this one, or via massRollback.js, is permitted.
  • GiantSnowman is prohibited from blocking an editor who has not been recently warned for the conduct in question. For the purposes of this restriction, "recently" is assumed to be within 7 days.

Violations may be reported by any editor to the Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard. GiantSnowman may appeal these restrictions directly to the Arbitration Committee at any time.

For the Arbitration Committee, firefly ( t · c ) 19:10, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you. GiantSnowman 19:14, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Youth career

Hello GiantSnowman. On Ethan Mbappé-- I won't change your revert, because it's true that Ethan Mbappé hasn't yet played a match for the youth team in 2024. But when he does, his youth career must be reopened. I understand you may disagree, but for me, the youth career continues until he has played his final youth game. That's how it should be. Just like we don't close the "reserve" career before a player plays his final reserve game. A player can be both a youth player and senior player at the same time, just like a player can be both a reserve and senior player at the same time. Hell, a player could be all three at the same time.
So for now, it's fine. But when (most likely) he goes back to starting and playing with the U19s, I will go back and open his youth career. Paul Vaurie (talk) 19:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Your way is too confusing. When do you make the cut off? GiantSnowman 21:48, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
When the player no longer plays for the youth team and only plays for the senior/reserve team. In cases where you can't find sources about the player's youth career, I understand why you should cut off at the senior debut, but for such a prominent club like PSG, I can find literally every line-up for the under-19s and under-17s if I look hard enough. Also, in France, youth football is only up to age 19, and the cut off-date is the year of birth+19 years. For example, Ethan Mbappé will no longer be able to play youth football at the start of the 2025–26 season, because 2006+19=2025. So that usually also helps for cutting off certain players that make their senior debut at age 18-19 in their final season of youth football eligibility.
I understand why cutting it off at the senior debut date might be easier, but if we're looking for accuracy, we shouldn't just close the youth career when the player is still playing youth football. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:54, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Examples: Xavi Simons - he played in the UEFA Youth League for PSG in February 2022, but made his senior debut in February 2021. Kays Ruiz-Atil - he went back to play for the under-19s after having played six months on the senior team. I usually leave invisible comments so people know why the youth career and senior career overlap. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:57, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
But players play with youth teams into their 30s - usually for fitness or discipline reasons! GiantSnowman 18:44, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Well, training and being a part of a team is different, right? Players older than the age limit cannot play youth football in France, at least. Paul Vaurie (talk) 21:06, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Overage players can play in certain competitions, not just train. What about if he doesn't play for the youth team for 2 years? GiantSnowman 21:56, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I guess it would be country-by-country, then. I can only speak for France, and in France, youth football is age-restricted. We also don't have under-23 leagues. I'm not sure about what you mean by the 2 year thing. Paul Vaurie (talk) 02:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
If he doesn't play for the youth team again until 2026, are you going to have an infobox like (for example):
{{Infobox football biography
|youthyears1 = 2017–2023
|youthclubs1 = Paris Saint-Germain
|youthyears2 = 2026–
|youthclubs2 = Paris Saint-Germain
|years1 = 2023–2026
|clubs1 = Paris Saint-Germain
|caps1 = 15
|goals1 = 0
}} GiantSnowman 18:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Giantsnowman, you've just demonstrated not only your lack of ability to listen, but also your lack of knowledge about French football. Ethan Mbappé will not be allowed to play with youth teams after 30 June 2025. Per WP:CIR I kindly advise you to understand your own abilities and competencies, and avoid editing in this area. SniperLight47 sockpuppeting

Just a heads up, User:SniperLight47 is now sockpuppeting as User:SniperLight46. Anwegmann (talk) 00:20, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

I can't block socks - please can you report at WP:SPI? GiantSnowman 19:23, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

And do keep in mind the insults they have been directing towards others in their talkpage! The one in Indonesian reads roughly "Thanks for the suggestions and guidelines, i hope they are useful and that i am able to edit according to policies and specific instructions", but the one directed to you on 10 January (in "English") is dead serious.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on List of association football players who died during their careers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of association footballers who died during their careers. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Jasin Assehnoun

Hey, I was wondering about the edit you reverted in Jasin Assehnoun article. He is half Finnish and half Moroccan, considered to be Finnish and Moroccan 50/50 "equally", so why those categories don't apply? Syvä-äksy (talk) 19:02, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Just because he is a footballer who holds Moroccan citizenship (through descent) does not mean that he is a 'Moroccan footballer'. GiantSnowman 19:03, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi. I’ve no intention of reverting you (I have far too much respect for your experience) but can you explain why you consider that Soccerway is a better source than Soccerbase. I find Soccerway very difficult to interpret, with far too many (unexplained) symbols. I’d be interested in your explanation. Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 19:08, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Soccerbase is only really useful, in my experience, for English & Scottish league players - although I agree Soccerway is overly complicated! GiantSnowman 19:09, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
Ok - that’s fine Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 19:13, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Vulgar vandalism

Already logged off and now am going to bed, but before i do so this: I see you have already warned this "user" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:UltramanZeroAwokkkk#February_2023), have a look at what they did at Natxo Insa; following a (supposedly) bad performance for Malaysia, this "person" went on a rampage of despicable insults towards the player.

Vandalism was so much and of so much "quality" the patrollers forgot to fix vandalism in the subject's full name, i took care of that even though i know i'll be accused of vandalism in edit summary notes in spite of doing the exact opposite :(

Attentively, enjoy the rest of your evening 2001:8A0:765C:E100:EC25:510:13AD:99E8 (talk) 23:13, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Amos Nondi

@GiantSnowman:, You protected Amos Nondi from page creation 7 years ago but his career has progressed a lot since then and I created Draft:Amos Nondi (2), woudl you be able to unprotect Amos Nondi from creation and/or move my draft to mainspace? Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 09:47, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Done - in future, please do not create 'rival' drafts to existing drafts, instead edit and improve the existing draft. GiantSnowman 17:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

What you left on my talk page,

@GiantSnowman, as per Wikipedia:Do not bite the newcomers, to avoid being a "biter" to newcomers, rather than deleting in the form of reverting an incorrect edit from someone inexperienced, you should attempt to rectify any errors. In my opinion you didn't follow this guideline when you reverted my edit on Connor Parsons and then rather bluntly threatened me with a ban on my talk page and I don't feel this is fair. I understand you're infinitely more experienced on matters such as these so correct me (nicely this time..?) if I have made any errors in my reasoning but due to my edits being mostly spelling corrections on low-traction pages, I am - to any significant contributions on the site - a newcomer and thus should likely be treated as described on the guideline previously linked. Please get back to me on this :)

SPAG checker (talk) 22:59, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

You have been left numerous messages about your conduct, which has continued with the same issues arising, and so the warning messages have escalated per WP:WARN. GiantSnowman 23:01, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
So WP:WARN is clearly specified to override Wikipedia:Do not bite the newcomers? Plus, out of context it sounds bad and yet these are trivial errors by a newcomer and thus I'd personally appreciate I wasn't threatened with retrospective punishment as you did. Your reply has hardly been satisfactory considering you haven't addressed why you ignored the guideline I linked? If you explained another one of Wikipedia's mounds of obscure guidelines in that such and such rule does not apply in such and such situation, I accept that but as far as I can see you still haven't followed WP:Do not bite the newcomers. I respect you as an admin but I still don't think this is fair and I do feel a little warded off by all of this which is what the guideline I linked was specifically meant to reduce the occurence of... Oh, and you still haven't clarified why you reverted the edit rather than correcting it, another possible non-abidence of WP:Do not bite the newcomers...
SPAG checker (talk) 23:23, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
(by talk reader) I'm disappointed that you've taken this approach, SPAG. The messages left on your user talk pages are boilerplate agreed by the editing community in our user warning templates. If those boilerplate messages angered you then I'm afraid you won't make it here on Wikipedia. Wikipedia encounters a lot of ne'er-do-wells and our user warning templates are one-size-fits-all so they have to address the bad faith vandals just the same as the shrinking violet crybullies. I think had you approached with humility you would take those messages onboard, rather than foolishly try to reproach GiantSnowman, who is far kinder than I am. So you see, sticking to boilerplate is meant to protect you, the new user, from personally written messages like this. With that appreciation please see that your bad behavior triggers warnings and if you don't want warnings (or worse) just stop making problematic edits. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:02, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
To be fair, the warnings were because of forgetting to add a source (and separated by several months), it wasn't really a behavior issue that began this. ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 00:30, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
@Chaotic Enby: Yes, I didn't bother looking at the edits in question as it seems laughable a new editor thinks an admin should just clean up the mess left behind rather than revert and issue a warning. What drew my attention was the attempted tone policing on this talk page (SPAG accusing GiantSnowman of biting newcomers). Chris Troutman (talk) 00:42, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Again, there might be a misunderstanding going on. It doesn't look like the user was asking the admin to clean up any mess, but just questioning why a level-3 escalating warning was given despite only one warning having been given months before. The issue is not really that an admin reverted and warned, but that the warning chosen was unnecessarily threatening. ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 00:48, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I don't think we misunderstand. SPAG added content without a source and got a level 2 warning. 65 days later it was the same problem and got a level 3 warning. I don't agree that GiantSnowman unreasonably escalated the situation or was unkind. If this was an IP we could argue this wasn't necessarily the same editor. This is a registered user, it was the same problem of not adding a citation, and it was a boilerplate warning. And this un-accomplished Wikipedian with less than three hundred edits complains that they've been bitten? Ludricrous. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:56, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I'd say calling someone "unaccomplished" and bringing up edit count isn't the best way to go at it, especially since WP:BITE is specifically about how to behave with newer editors. It's "don't bite the newbies", not "don't bite the accomplished Wikipedians". ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 01:17, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I spend far too much of my time cleaning ups after 'newbies' (their account is over 2 years old, they have over 200 edits) who cannot comply with the basic requirements of editing. GiantSnowman 12:50, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I understand how it can get pretty tiring in the long run. Good luck! ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 12:53, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
As far as I can see, forgetting to add a source is a trivial matter. It is not "bad behaviour", honestly it's outrageous you would even suggest that, and it is not necessarily a "problematic edit", especially given these are two warnings - from the same moderator - from trivial isolated incidents months apart, and *especially* given I am considered in most regards a newcomer as you yourself admitted. You, just like GiantSnowman himself, haven't addressed him not following the guidelines of WP:Do not bite the newcomers in that he reverted my edit rather than correcting it, and in terms of non-"boilerplate" responses, doubling down on his impoliteness towards me. Maybe I'm far from perfect in my handling of this situation but I feel you have been even less so.
SPAG checker (talk) 00:39, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
No, it's not trivial, editors are regularly and routinely blocked for it. WP:RS and WP:V and WP:BLP all apply as you have already been told. GiantSnowman 12:52, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

Notice

The article Charles Wood (footballer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

There is already a disambig for Charles Wood, there seem to be no pages linking to "Charles Wood (footballer)", and the page to which this currently directs - Charlie Wood (footballer) - seems to be for someone to whom literally nobody ever refers as Charles Wood, so there is no risk of wrongful searching. If this is not a disambig category I do not see why there needs to be a redirect to a footballer who has never played in the top 120 clubs in England, especially as other Charles Woods are far more prominent.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Am proposing a deletion of Charles Wood (footballer) - it seems to be a redirect of no use, and redirects to the less prominent Charles Wood (footballer).

Sockpuppetry

Please see this (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carlos_Fortes_(footballer,_born_1994)&diff=prev&oldid=1202798598). Transfer added without a source, i reverted citing precisely that reason, was immediately reverted, AGAIN with no source! I profit from the occasion to comment that i see you have already warned this user.

Speaking of "user", due to their main interest (Indonesian football, following a quick glance at the history of contributions) i'm almost 100% sure this is a sock of User:Dwinug.

P.S. I have already reverted again in Mr. Fortes, would not be the least surprised if the other person had done the same to me. Attentively RevampedEditor (talk) 16:25, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Regarding your reversion of my insertion of bad grammar at WP:BLP

That's fine. I know the subjunctive mood is archaic, pretentious and terrible.

My bad edit can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons&diff=prev&oldid=1203307604 123957a (talk) 17:23, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Your change to the grammar makes no sense. GiantSnowman 17:26, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Or, should I say more accurately, less sense than the stable version. GiantSnowman 17:27, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
I thought it meant the same thing... whatever. I will NEVER edit policy pages again if that's what is required from me to be a good editor! 123957a (talk) 17:33, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
We're not saying that. People are encouraged to WP:BEBOLD and make changes that might need changing - the issue was your the restoration, which was the disruptive element, not the original edit! GiantSnowman 17:35, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I know not to edit war... I was just trying to accomplish something big and get attention. 123957a (talk) 17:39, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
By that, I mean making a big improvement, not edit warring! 123957a (talk) 17:40, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
but a minor change to grammar is not a "big improvement". GiantSnowman 18:19, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman If you must gain consensus on the talk page before any edit goes through, they should just full-protect the page instead of semi-protecting it, to reduce disruption and save editors' time. 123957a (talk) 18:22, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Again, that is not what I said. Respectfully, the more you post here, the more I have concerns about your competence and understanding. GiantSnowman 18:23, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: User:Valjean told me I need to get consensus on the talk page first. 123957a (talk) 18:30, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
No, I didn't say that. You are really wasting our time. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 20:04, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
I am not Valjean. GiantSnowman 18:34, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: I know you and Valjean were saying the same thing: both condemned my behavior because it was out of line with WP:BRD. 123957a (talk) 18:42, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
And now we're condemning your behaviour because you are being disruptive and potentially trolling, referring to your 'bad edit' and repeatedly saying that it is " archaic, pretentious and terrible". Stop posting here and find something else to do. GiantSnowman 21:03, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman,
Valjean called it 'bad grammar' and I've heard people criticize the subjunctive as outdated/archaic.
I don't care whether it's used or not, and I'll stop wasting everyone's time on this. Let's move on. 123957a (talk) 21:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, I made a mistake in my above comment. I actually meant to say "GiantSnowman told me I need to get consensus on the talk page first.", see this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons&diff=prev&oldid=1203324223 123957a (talk) 14:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
That is not what I said. I said you should get consensus given your initial edit was reverted. GiantSnowman 19:15, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Script changing dates in citations

Hello, GinatSnowman. I noticed you were using a script to standardize dates in the Month day, Year format, which is great. However, you have left your script with the option turned on to also do that within citations. May I suggest turning it off? MOS:NUM subentry MOS:DATE specifically calls out citations as having different rules. That references WP:CITESTYLE, which specifically allows the other formats, but recommends consistency within an article.

The article where I noticed your efforts already was already consistent in date citations, using YYYY-MM-DD style, which is also the style that the automatic citation maker uses. The latter is probably going to make that format de facto standard over time, and using the script to make the changes is likely to lead to inconsistencies (as other edtors add automated citations). In any event, please consider turning off the citation change option in the script, and continuing to use it in article text. Dovid (talk) 20:39, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

It is not my script, and in any event I see no benefit to having the references in a different format to the rest of the article. GiantSnowman 21:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Jimmy Husband

Hi. Not sure why you have removed info on Jimmy Husband sourced and ref'd from the obit on the Everton FC website - reason wasn't given in your edit summary. Could you clarify for me? Ta. 09:29, 13 March 2024 (UTC) Cripesohblimey (talk) 09:29, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Because the level of detail is not needed, and some content is unsourced. GiantSnowman 20:05, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
I would contend that being part of a team that finishes second in Division Two is worth noting. It is in the obituary - perhaps I didn't specifically add a cite tag at the end of the sentence. Cripesohblimey (talk) 10:34, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
Feel free to re-add if properly sourced. GiantSnowman 09:16, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

Stafford County F.C.

Hello, I noticed you had a query about The Combination and notability, in particular with FA Cup entries, and it was pointed out Stafford County never entered; I've done a short page about them (they don't really need any more, frankly) and it seems to have been a deliberate decision NOT to enter the competition, being a sort of Stoke-based Corinthian. Although curiously they joined The Combination, seemingly apropos of nothing. Maybe they couldn't get fixtures any other way. But it does support the clubs in that particular emanation of The Combination as being "notable" as every other club had a tilt at the Cup. In Vitrio (talk) 23:01, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Interesting, thanks! GiantSnowman 20:01, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

I didn't mess with the infobox aside from updating it in visual editor mode. I didn't touch the spacing and I don't know why it does that. I guess infobox shouldn't be updated in visual editor mode.

You reverted a constructive change because you didn't like whitespace changes which were caused by Wikipedia's visual editor and obviously weren't intentionally made. That's disruptive and WP:POINTy. Robby.is.on (talk) 00:16, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
No, it wasn't - the pure revert was so Froglife got a notification (it worked!) and then I immediately restored the constructive element. GiantSnowman 08:30, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

FIFA Arab Cup naming

I just thought about it, can you explain why are main title of La Liga or Ligue 1 articles not presented with their partner, EA Sports and Uber Eats while this applies for Arab Cup and FIFA ? Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 01:35, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

We do not use sponsored names. GiantSnowman 08:24, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
FIFA is also a sponsor since it is a foreign entity to the UAFA. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 13:32, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
No, it is not. GiantSnowman 13:36, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Are not FIFA and UAFA independant of each other ? Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 13:40, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
No, claiming that FIFA'a involvement makes them a 'sponsor'. If that is the limit of your argument, then no wonder consensus is against you. GiantSnowman 13:40, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Consensus is against me because Hashim-afc has 15000 edits. To my mind that's defined as a sponsor because FIFA is not a creator of this competition and it's not affiliated to founders. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 13:46, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
That is not the reason why consensus is against you. GiantSnowman 14:55, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
There is no other reason, on all editions there is one partnership with FIFA, this is not relevant to rename Arab Cup to FIFA Arab Cup. It's like renaming Ligue 1 to Ligue 1 Uber Eats. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 15:09, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
No, it's not the same at all, as I and others at the article talk page have explained. GiantSnowman 15:10, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Okay, was 1963 Arab Cup (first édition of FIFA Arab Cup) in partnership with FIFA ? Do you see the nonsense ? Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 15:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
We use the current name of the competition for the main article, and the contemporary name for individual tournament articles. This has already been explained to you (using the AFCON example) - why don't you understand that? GiantSnowman 15:24, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
The comparison is irrelevant because the competition and the association which organizes it, have been affiliated with FIFA therefore recognized de facto since the beginning. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 15:35, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Please ask yourself why nobody agrees with you. This conversation is over, thanks. GiantSnowman 15:38, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Death of Martin Herbster

Does this prove the death of Martin Herbster (sorry it's in German) : https://bnn.de/karlsruhe/karlsruher-norden/graben-neudorf/herausragende-persoenlichkeit-graben-neudorf-trauert-um-seinen-ringer-helden-martin-herbster Badische Neue Nachrichten are usually a reliable source.

Another link: https://nbrv.de/index.php?view=article&id=129:martin-herbster-ist-verstorben&catid=10:news I see this a less reliable source though. Bdschi (talk) 16:51, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

@Bdschi: BNN is absolutely fine. Most of the article is paywalled and I cannot access it – does it mention the exact date of death? The article is from 8 March and in your change which GiantSnowman reverted you gave 2 March as the date of death. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 17:23, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
Agree with Robby - BNN is fine to verify that he has died, the issue is that you did not include it in your edit (along with a number of other articles about people you claim recently died). GiantSnowman 18:03, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@Bdschi: I saw you updated the article using the BNN article. I checked the article, it does not mention a specific date, only states "Nun ist Herbster nach schwerer Krankheit im Alter von 62 Jahren verstorben" ("Herbster has now passed away after a serious illness at the age of 62"), so I've removed the exact date for now. Robby.is.on (talk) 19:28, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

Hey GS, do these edits look familiar to you? I'm a bit suspicious of their newness, so to speak, but I'm also interested in moving Draft:Suriname Major League 2024 out of draft space--it's a pretty big thing for a small country. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:13, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi GS. I realise that non-constructive editing can be really frustrating for veteran editors. But in my experience, for achieving the desired result – better editing – educating other editors is more effective than shaming them ([2], [3]). Robby.is.on (talk) 18:56, 12 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I was checking the page history of Viktor Gyökeres just now and seen this edit. I then checked User talk:2A0B:6204:1B05:CD00:222D:9ACD:90C1:7923 and seen you've twinkled a warning, which I am confident that has gone to the wrong page. Not entirely sure if the anonymous person who reverted a previous edit back to the original version has noticed this. But at least the article is always what it should be. Released players

Hi, just as a further to your earlier edit, I am aware that professional football contracts finish on 30th June. However, these are not professional contracts, as Wealdstone are only a semi-professional club. The official statement put out by the club states that these players have been released, as opposed to saying "leaving at the end of contract" or similar: https://www.wealdstone-fc.com/post/retained-list-2024

I think that with this statement, it is fair to assume that the players have left the club, rather than that they are imminently leaving. As such, I have re-edited Corie Andrews to reflect this. Please let me know if there are any issues surrounding this Wld85 (talk) 15:51, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

That is fine, but you need to make that clear in your edit summary to avoid further confusion. GiantSnowman 16:53, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello, GiantSnowman (or can I call you "Snow"?),

Category redirects are created differently than article redirects. Most editors aren't aware of this because they have no reason to ever create one. But since you did, I thought I'd just point out the difference you can see in the code/template used when you look at the code on the page.

I hope you are having an awesome weekend. See you in the AFD trenches. Liz Read! Talk! 22:57, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Logan Levkoff

Ive been watching old episodes of Married at First Sight and came here to read up about the couples and doctors. I was suprised to see the Logan Levkoff doesn't have her own article here. I researched her and prepared the content and references for it. I started the process to make it when I saw that many tried and failed at creating Logan Levkoff between 2007-2013. 11 years later, I believe she more than satisfies WP:GNG and I'd like to make the page. You protected the page in February 2013 from being created which is why I'm here. I kindly request that you unprotect it so I can have a crack at making it. Thank you. MaskedSinger (talk) 15:53, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

I suggest you make it in draft space, given that it was repeatedly deleted as non-notable. GiantSnowman 17:46, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
ok cool. thank you! MaskedSinger (talk) 19:08, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
This is done Draft:Logan Levkoff. Please take a look. Would love to know your thoughts. I didn't add categories or do the inbox. Wanted to first see if this passes muster. MaskedSinger (talk) 11:28, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
I'm not convinced to be honest, but feels free to submit via WP:AFC for a neutral review? GiantSnowman 17:41, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Why wouldn't you be neutral? This was basically from scratch. I have no idea how it commpares to what what but given the refernces, I can't imagine notability is an issue. In any event, how does one go from a draft to WP:AFC? MaskedSinger (talk) 19:48, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Because I deleted and SALTed a previous version. See WP:AFCREVIEW as to how to have your draft reviewed. GiantSnowman 20:23, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Ok. I did that. As for the salting, I don't think that disqualifies you here. I imagine there are many cases here when articles were created and deleted because it was too soon and then they went on to become household names. Not that she's one, but 11 years later is a lot of water under the bridge. MaskedSinger (talk) 05:37, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Georgetown Ibayani FC players indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 02:50, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

Youth honours (something that is deemed irrelevant no, at least in clubs?) continue to be added to this player's page, and now also something called "Debrecen İmprovement Organization"Award" (what the hell?!). BOTH continue to be added without a source, and i feel (given the GLARING similarity in editorial style) that both accounts shown in edit summaries (Alxannnn and Elnurrrrr) are the same person. See this "charmer" in Simon Kjær for instance (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Simon_Kj%C3%A6r&diff=prev&oldid=1224259601)...

I had to revert them manually, would very much like to have the rollback feature back, but it's just not happening. Attentively, enjoy your break! RevampedEditor (talk) 11:40, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

The lack of sourcing is significantly more concerning than the 'merit' of the award. Some youth awards can be notable and therefore worth including in player articles. GiantSnowman 15:31, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Runner-up in a league with a final match (like MLS)

Hello GS. Just wondering -- what's your opinion on including honours of being runner-up in a league competition that has a final match? Examples include MLS Cup, Division 1 Féminine and Championnat National U19. I'm asking because I'm debating whether including honours like the one in Ethan Mbappé#Honours is relevant or not. Thanks for your input! Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:55, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

I'm inclined to say that a runner-up in a league (whether that's 'normal' or 'final match') is notable. The slight difference here is that the U19 competition is youth so not always notable. However, as it appears to be the highest U19 youth level, I say include it. GiantSnowman 14:14, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
Great! I'm personally indifferent about it but since you lean towards this I will make sure to keep including it in articles like Ethan Mbappé. BTW about him, did you hear he's going to Lille? Paul Vaurie (talk) 17:41, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
No, I didn't - feel free to update the article if it's confirmed and there's a reliable source confirming it. GiantSnowman 17:42, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

Brian Kaltak "vandalism"

What are you talking about? He did win the Championship?

All you've changed is removing this line: "Kaltak was part of the Mariners' Championship, Premiership and AFC Cup winning 2023-24 season."

What are actually on about? What have I vandalised? He literally was, and it's referenced. Beyond ridiculous. Go fix it back yourself. Matt jobe watson (talk) 09:13, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

You removed valid sources. At best your edit was incompetent. GiantSnowman 18:15, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Go fix it up then champ. His page is now inaccurate because you removed details of him winning the 2023-24 championship. Matt jobe watson (talk) 13:07, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
I should not need to clean up after you, repeatedly. GiantSnowman 17:14, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

I don't mean to be a pedant on this section you've removed from British Asians in association football, but based on the fact that Masood was an immigrant from Pakistan in 1956, he would have been a British colonial subject. You can read more about it here: British_subject#1949_to_1982. So frankly, the fact that he was in Britain and played for Bradford for that season, shows that he was a 'British Asian' in as far as you could be at that time. So I'd argue that he shouldn't be excluded form the article, but maybe needs a line to justify that he was a British subject. Mountaincirquetalk 13:52, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Not sure this meets WP:BASIC. All independent in-depth coverage is WP:MILL election coverage. Simply being a candidate doesn't guarantee notability (WP:NPOL). Articles similar to this this usually don't survive AfD.

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Clearfrienda, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I've proposed an article that you started, Tommy Frenck, for deletion because it meets one or more of our deletion criteria, and I don't think that it is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to contest the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

If you object to the article's deletion, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the issues raised in the deletion notice. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Clearfrienda}}. And remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. Thanks!

Disruption

I see you have already had the "pleasure" of "talking" with this user (here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:LightingMan01). With no success of course, the minute/second messages arrive at their talkpage they remove them without an inch of a reply.

Much more serious this: yes, i know clubs should be piped but i prefer them (in wording, not in box or intro) unpiped, that's an aesthetical approach more than anything wouldn't you agree? Look at what this user did to an anon edit by me at Sergio Postigo (again, it's also not vandalism when i edit anonymously even having an account), they reinstated the piped clubs (OK, a correct action per WP guidelines) but REMOVED my storyline additions, REFERENCE included (see this https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sergio_Postigo&diff=next&oldid=1229228832), then wrote "reverting vandalism" in their summary!! Highly disruptive and false in my book; i do profit from the chance to notify you that, whenever this person edits a page and pipes the clubs, which is the ONLY thing they do here, pipe clubs, i never unpipe them back - as i just did in Mr. Postigo, i only reinstated my sourced wording.

Attentively, enjoy the rest of your weekend RevampedEditor (talk) 15:39, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

Please stop changing date formats contrary to MOS:RETAIN

RETAIN does not apply when the initial date format is simply wrong. Lasker was German and they use DMY, so MDY is wring. Steinitz is less clear and I'm content to remain MDY for him. GiantSnowman 07:35, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

You are wrong. German date formats are irrelevant in the English Wikipedia. Germans do not write "24 December 1868" because "December" is not a German word. This only applies to national varieties of English, and Germany does not have a national variety of English. Quale (talk) 07:39, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
List of date formats by country says otherwise. GiantSnowman 18:03, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Billy Forbes

You don't seem to know the difference between vandalism and a mistake. But there was no mistake in my edit, and your threats don't impress me, so forget about them. Unofficial matches also count, in case you didn't know, so 22+10=32, and 8+11=19. Fix it yourself and stop vandalizing. You're no smarter than me, believe me. Proof of your mistake: https://www.national-football-teams.com/player/24995/Billy_Forbes.html Wolfgang (talk) 18:41, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

No, unofficial matches do NOT count. GiantSnowman 18:48, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
No? So show your balls and fix it: Robert Lewandowski. https://www.national-football-teams.com/player/27416/Robert_Lewandowski.html Correct from 152 to 149 and from 83 to 76. Let's go! Come on! And necessarily here and here and here. But if you won't do it - stay away from me and my edits! Because you wrong, and you know about it. Wolfgang (talk) 19:11, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
What do you mean, 'fix it'? I just reverted your incorrect edit. GiantSnowman 19:26, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Lewandowski has it too incorrect data. Why don't you improve there? :) You are only brave for a little known football players. Wolfgang (talk) 19:46, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. GiantSnowman 20:02, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, but I consider my arguments as final, which make you pathetic. I showed you how wrong you are. Wolfgang (talk) 20:20, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

If Forbes has 22 games and 10 goals, why is there a mistake here? 32 apps and 19 goals? Vandalism too? You're a ridiculous. Wolfgang (talk) 18:47, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

WP:WIKIPEDIAISNOTARELIABLESOURCE. GiantSnowman 19:27, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
You have to be a "genius" to use Wikipedia against Wikipedia... But why are you correcting my edits and not some other mistakes? I give you examples where unofficial matches and goals are recognized and you do nothing about it. Wolfgang (talk) 19:48, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I cannot correct every single mistake on every single page. Now you know it's incorrect, why don't YOU do something about it? GiantSnowman 20:02, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I will not do that because I know, that unnoficial matches also count. And you are inconsistent and officious. Wolfgang (talk) 20:18, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
What do you think 'unofficial' means? GiantSnowman 20:18, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
For example matches with members who are not in FIFA, albo matches that were not recognized by FIFA. That's why Lewandowski has 152 apps, not 149 (with that GiantSnowman is agree), and that's why Billy Forbes has 32 apps, not 22 (with that GiantSnowman is not agree - no one knows why, maybe he likes to be malicious). Wolfgang (talk) 20:26, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
If you continue to add incorrect information to BLPs, you will be blocked. GiantSnowman 20:31, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I've shown you how wrong you are, and you have no arguments for it. Remember, Wikipedia is not your private site. You are not the boss of this place. Wolfgang (talk) 20:49, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
You've shown me nothing other than your inability to be a civil and productive editor. GiantSnowman 16:23, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
I am never civil to malicious trolls. And my productivity is much higher than what you do here. I remind you - Robert Lewandowski according to NFT - let's go! If you don't do this, you are not credible. Wolfgang (talk) 17:15, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

George Nevett

Many thanks for getting in touch. I am very sorry that you felt the need to do anything. I searched the drafts and nothing came up. I do not know how to search all individual sandboxes if you know of a way to do that I would be grateful. With regards the footballer in question he made his debut for Rochdale in the English Football League whilst they were in League Two. Independent of that, there were more than enough sources available to satisfy WP:GNG, that is significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. However, you seem to have deleted all of them now from the draft available. Not to worry, doesn’t matter in the bigger picture of things. Best wishes. G Hildreth gazzard (talk) 18:59, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

They are in the history, I deleted nothing deliberately, they will just be in an old version following the merges. GiantSnowman 19:27, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

This is getting out of hand, really. Last time i checked, we are not supposed to insert PLAYOFF stats in the infobox, because that's what the chart below is for (also with the cup apps and other stuff).

User:Gregor kai begs to differ, and even tough i have explained it to them in edit summaries, they do not seem to care. Attentively 193.137.135.5 (talk) 14:28, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for correction. Now correct Robert Lewandowski according to NFT https://www.national-football-teams.com/player/27416/Robert_Lewandowski.html. But you won't do it, because you don't have the courage for that, because that would be vandalism. That's why you are inconsistent. Wolfgang (talk) 17:09, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

Sébastien Pocognoli

You recently removed the statistic section of this page that another user added without valid reason for removal - this is practically vandalism of the page considering the source they cited does support the changes they made. MisterXBelgium (talk) 22:46, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

No, Soccerway does NOT confirm Pocognoli's stats, just the results of the club generally. GiantSnowman 17:56, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Revert

Hi GiantSnowman, I noticed you reverted my edit to Georg Kareski under MOS:ETHNICITY. However, MOS:ETHNICITY states "Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless relevant to the subject's notability." I would argue that his Jewishness is pretty clearly relevant to his notability. The only thing he really did was defend the antisemitic Nuremberg Laws, as I'm sure many nazis did, but that would not make any of them notable, it's the fact that he was Jewish that made his defense so surprising to people and therefore notable. Relinus (talk) 18:17, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Feel fee to change to "was a German banker and Jewish Revisionist Zionist" or similar - but not "German Jewish"... GiantSnowman 18:22, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Can I ask why? "German Jewish" is a real thing, and a phrase used by German Jews. Relinus (talk) 18:39, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Because MOS:ETHNICTY applies, as I said. GiantSnowman 18:41, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Greek football clubs in European competitions

Can you help with Greek football clubs in European competitions? There was an active disagreement with an IP user, asked for 3O, opened discussion on FOOTY, endless dispute in Talk page, three users have the same pov (Me, BEN917, Nevechear) and IP user (my guess, former Kyopa) keeps reverting and I don't think he's ever gonna stop. Abudabanas (talk) 08:49, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

See that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Greek_football_clubs_in_European_competitions#Discussion_result As for the other user accusing me, I am not related nor do I know him and you can check that out. Like this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Abudabanas/Archive — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:586:813D:2A91:75F0:CFBD:C49A:99CB (talk) 09:47, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Warned rightfully for violating the 3R rule and edit warring. Stopped editing and I am trying to find a solution through Talk page, inviting other users to share their pov, posting a discussion on Footy and adding a request for 3O. Don't think that IP user acted accordingly as can be seen from today's edit history and Talk: Greek football clubs in European competitions#Summary tables of results for each European cup separately. Abudabanas (talk) 10:47, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
I have reverted and blocked the IP(s), and added the page to my watchlist. GiantSnowman 10:49, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

Concerned about a somewhat prolific editor

Hi. I was browsing this article and I thought it was strange that all the sections started with lists of pages for further reading which are, to put it as fairly as I can, not unambiguously related or useful for someone trying to understand the article's content (even making allowances for the fact that, in my experience, psychoanalytic theory is prone to being rather abstruse, sometimes deliberately). It's also strange that the sections start with a punchy quotation. I did that kind of thing when I was writing papers in university, which (correct me if I'm wrong but) is entirely not how Wikipedia articles should read.

In fact the whole thing was so un-Wikipedia-like to read that I actually, for the first time I can remember, went into the history in an attempt to figure out if this was organic growth or if some limited number of editors was responsible. I think I found one. Many of their top-edited pages share similar problems. I don't know what to do about this, since the topics aren't exactly of world-shaking significance, nor is it aggressively contentious behavior, so it doesn't feel right to post to Admin Noticeboard/Incidents, but I'm concerned nonetheless. Your username was on the list of recently active admins and your userpage makes me think you might also care about these topics being well-represented. Though I guess we'll have to get someone very interested in football to make the actual edits? (I kid.)

Either way, here we are. Thanks in advance for reading. 2001:1C02:2C02:C900:B873:E5E8:7E8E:AECF (talk) 17:12, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Page Deletion: Devin Boyce

Hello, while editing one of Forward Madison FC's pages, I noticed the deletion of the page of Devin Boyce. I feel that this is in error, as Boyce (in my opinion) is indeed a notable player - he been a professional soccer player since 2021, has over 100 career professional appearances, and was on the All-USL League One second team in 2021.

Here are some links that I feel are significant for his notability:

If Boyce's page needs additional work, please let me know and I'd be happy to work on it. Yoshiegg25 03:09, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Riku Sjöroos

Hello, I have a question about his stats. It's true he played in two Finnish League Cup games with Haka earlier this year. He was never under contract with the club but was only in a roster as a test player. It is mentioned here https://fchaka.fi/uutiset/fc-hakan-liigacup-alkaa-lauantaina-oulussa/.

Even though it's "an official tournament", Finnish League Cup exists basically to get some competitive-ish games during a long pre-season. But the clubs consider those games as friendlies and try different line-ups. It is also permitted in the Finnish League Cup rules to use test players in the games (three test players, seven substitutions, per https://www.hjk.fi/artikkelit/miehet/liigacup-kayntiin-perjantaina-klo-14-mukana-kiinnostava-testipelaaja/ for example). So he never belonged in Haka on a contract.

Should Haka be included in his infobox and/or in career stats section? Thanks 16:01, 17 August 2024 (UTC) Syvä-äksy (talk) 16:01, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Yes - the contractual position is irrelevant here, the fact is he played in a competitive official match(es). In Scottish football trial lists can play in the league. GiantSnowman 16:43, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Peter Atherton

Hi GiantSnowman. Just replying about Peter Atherton as you removed my edit again. I would say it is a notable event in Peter Atherton's career. As a defensive medifield who rarely scored, his long-distance goal against Aston Villa is a notable exception, and one that readers may be interested in knowing about and watching themselves. I guess my question to you is why is it not notable? Would you prefer it if I added in more context around Atherton's goalscoring record, which was modest, include a reference to this as an exception? I'm just trying to find out why this is not something that belongs in a Wikipedia entry? Thanks, Chegchenko (talk) 14:12, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

Do reliable sources say it was a notable event? GiantSnowman 15:15, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
The Independent (28th Nov 1994) titled their report of the match 'Atherton's lesson for Little' and described the goal as 'a freakishly spectacular 40-yard equaliser'. (MIKE ROWBOTTOM. (November 28, 1994, Monday). Football: Atherton's lesson for Little. The Independent (London). https://advance.lexis.com/api/document?collection=news&id=urn:contentItem:3S7T-BFF0-008G-C04P-00000-00&context=1519360.)
The Guardian (28th Nov 1994) described it as a 'superb 35-yard drive' (David Lacey. (November 28, 1994). SOCCER: EDGY DRAW IS LITTLE REWARD; Premiership: Aston Villa 1, Sheffield Wednesday 1. The Guardian (London). https://advance.lexis.com/api/document?collection=news&id=urn:contentItem:3TDH-0150-006X-B3TV-00000-00&context=1519360.)
The Mirror (28th Nov 1994) described it as 'Peter Atherton's spectacular 57th-minute equaliser...Mark Bosnich's poor kick found Atherton 30 yards out, and the £800,000 right back released a dipping volley which clipped the bar as it sailed over the flailing keeper' (via AVCF History: https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/4347).
If I add these references to the edit, would this make it count as 'notable'? Thanks, Chegchenko (talk) 17:28, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
These are all superlatives in match reports - nothing unusual there! We normally only include key goals/games - debuts, hat-tricks, in finals, pat of a shock result etc. GiantSnowman 19:55, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks. This seems quite a bland definition of what is 'notable' in a career, particularly one such as Atherton's, in which 45-yard screamers were quite rare. It seems like something that people would like to know about, if they were reading his page. (I also note that David Beckham's goal vs Wimbledon in 1996 is included in his entry.) However, as this was Peter Atherton's first Premier League goal, I have updated the passage to reflect this. Thanks for your help and feedback. -- Chegchenko (talk) 07:46, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

The club played in the FA cup yesterday as per my most recent update just before th page was deleted this 100% hits the WP:GNG requirement: England: Clubs that play or have played at step 6 of the National League System (level 10 of the English football league system), or in the FA Cup, FA Trophy, FA Amateur Cup or FA Vase generally meet WP:GNG criteria. Joey Antonioli edit

Hello,

Those two clubs have an academy that they run jointly, here is the Dutch language article. There is no matching article in English wiki, so I wasn't sure how to properly link it, considered not linking at all, but then those are not some obscure clubs, so I linked them twice separately, that's also confusing, I understand. Maybe do {{interlanguage link}}, like FC Twente / Heracles Academy [nl] ?

Peer review

Hi, I was referred to you as an experienced football editor. I therefore ask you to please review some of my contribs (especially the longer ones). I'm curious what mistakes I make (especially language-wise, as I'm a non-native English speaker and other rules-wise) just to become better in the future. I am not exactly a new user (because I have some experience in pl wiki), but I guess it's not enough to be absolutely sure about myself here :) Regards, Karol739 (talk) 19:41, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Nothing wrong with your language per se, but some improvements include this and this, to make it sound a bit better and more natural. GiantSnowman 20:47, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi, in Tomasz Loska I've used that form, because "with a option to a further year" is a direct translation from Polish (from the sources). I did not want to cause any autorship rights inconveniences. Karol739 (talk) 13:01, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
We should not be directly copying text (translated or otherwise) unless used as a quote. GiantSnowman 17:07, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Answering my question

Don’t know if you’re deliberately ignoring my question, or if you genuinely don’t get any notification when I reply to you on my talk page, but I’m posting it here in a final attempt to get you to answer my question.

My original question regarding your claim that there were no sources when editing the Jakob Dunsby article:

Hi again. This is now the third time you have had a problem with my sourcing (maybe you’ve had more problems, but at least these are the ones you have let me know about). Let me be the first one to admit that I’m definitely not without my mistakes, and that I try to make as few as possible. Again though, I struggle to see what the problem is. At least with the specific edit you are mentioning.
His middle name is mentioned in both the sources that's already in the article that are used to present who he is and where he plays, so it makes sense that I would include his full name, as it wasn’t there already. I don’t really know what else you want. I feel like if you had used the minute you used to write this message to check this instead, we would have been without this discussion. Maybe there is something I’m missing, and if that’s the case, I would love for you to enlighten me.
I’m hoping you’ll answer this time, as it is a question directed directly at you, but based on my previous attempts to engage in a conversation with you, I’m not holding my breath. Eggman02 (talk) 21:53, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
What question, where? If you want to include a full name, that is welcome, but only if cited to a source. GiantSnowman 20:11, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

2014 AC Nagano Parceiro season Deletion discussion.

Hi hi 👋

You said to let you know as I found sources, I’ve found a site which is an independent data visualisation site for every team, season, and game of the Japanese professional leagues, including J3 from 2014 season on.

https://www.football-lab.jp/naga/match?year=2014

Seems to me to be a significant, reliable, independent secondary source which handles all the data stuff internally and has editorial policies in place… and was wondering if you considered this sufficient. You have to click around the site a bit to see different tabs, and unfortunately (at least for me on my iPad) google auto-translate translates the data, but not the tabs that help you get around the site, but I also linked to the first match’s individual data visualisation on the article, if you want to check what individual game citations will look like.

Also not sure from the timing whether you saw the section / sources I added re the season’s stadium revamp.

thanks a lot, hope you’re having a great weekend,

michael Absurdum4242 (talk) 12:59, 21 September 2024 (UTC)

That is pure data - where is the WP:SIGCOV? GiantSnowman 17:27, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi there, thanks for your reply.
as far as I can tell, it meets all the criteria for significance - “
Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material.”
The match and season pages address the topic directly, do not require original research to understand, and is not a trivial mention - they are the main topic of the source material.
Also, while the pages are statistic based, they are not taken from anywhere else, the company collects and processes the data from direct observation of the games - there isn’t anyone else out there producing say data for the number of times a player enters the 30meter line, or dribbling stats for this game vs the season average. They then further process the basic data to produce a visual timeline of the match broken down into 15 minute phases, synthesising possession, shots on goal, and goals scored into a single graphic. Finally, the company produces what I *think* is a proprietary statistic (I can’t find it anywhere in google, except pointing to this company’s pages) - CBP, “Chance Building Point”, in a transformative use of the underlying data, built using all the other statistics.
All this seems to me to be clear evidence that the company producing the site are undertaking independent research, with a clear authorial and editorial intent. Given that, I can’t see how this doesn’t count as significant?
I feel like if some random cub reporter had watched the game and written even a fraction of this out in words - ie “AC Nagano Parceiro played Fukushima United FC in their first match of the season on March 9, 2014 at Ajinomoto Field, Nishigaoka. Attendance was 4,312. Nagano Parceiro won the match 1-0, with Forward Shunta Takahashi scoring in the 17th minute of the first half. While Fukushima United had higher possession throughout the match, they only had five shots on goal compared to 12 for Nagano Parceiro” - then we wouldn’t be having this conversation, because THAT would definitely be significant coverage, but because it’s presented in numbers rather than words it’s somehow easier to overlook?
Anyway, sorry to take your time again.
have a great day, Michael. Absurdum4242 (talk) 04:32, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
Club reports are not enough - it needs to be independent third-party sources. GiantSnowman 10:47, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
Umm, this IS an independent third party source though? As per their company about page (via google translate)
“ "Football LAB" provides not only J.League match results and basic stats (number of shots, number of passes, etc.), but also "one step further data" such as play data such as passes and tackles in the match, and "Football LAB's original player evaluation index score "Chance Building Points (CBP)" derived from statistical analysis based on a huge amount of data of over 1 million.
Through "Football LAB", we hope that supporters of each J.League club, soccer fans, and many people involved in soccer will use this site to learn more about soccer and enjoy it more.
"Football LAB" is a "laboratory" as the name of the site suggests. We aim to provide valuable data, and we plan to review the content from time to time so that we can contribute even a little to the strengthening, spread, and development of Japanese soccer from the perspective of data.
"Football LAB" uses data from "J STATS: J STATS" *1, the official J.League stats, but the number of shots and the number of last passes are numbers obtained independently by Data Stadium.”
They are an external data visualisation organisation outside of both the central J-league organisation and and of the individual teams. Absurdum4242 (talk) 12:58, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
This is their (Data Stadium, the company that produces “Football Lab”) company ownership etc details, if that helps
https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/156167-92#overview Absurdum4242 (talk) 13:04, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
The fact you have said "we aim to provide" (my emphasis) shows you have a WP:COI here. GiantSnowman 13:29, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
In fact, no… as I wrote, that is a google translate of their company “about” page, which I quoted to show they are an independent third party. I am nothing at all to do with them, being a NZ based souvenir shop owner without even that much interest in soccer 😹
I am absolutely not accusing you of arguing in bad faith, but suggesting WP:COI honestly sounds like a reach? If you’re determined that the sources I sent through aren’t kosher then I’m not really sure what else I can do to convince you, so I’ll not bother you here, and just make a note that I’ve added those sources, and that they’re independent on the main deletion discussion thread.
you have a lovely evening. Absurdum4242 (talk) 14:09, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
You have not sent any SIGCOV which would make me re-consider my !vote. GiantSnowman 14:24, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

Repoy to Your Message

Kumusta/Hello,

Thanks for your message but actually, I disagree. I am sorry, but I have to disagree with you. You see, I’m not being disruptive or non-constructive in any way, shape or form. I simply add a goal to the goal count because Armstrong score last week against the San Jose Earthquakes. Here’s the proof: [10].
He did score a goal, and that is why I added it. If you believe he did not score this goal, you are more than welcome to contact the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, the MLS, or Google Sports records or all three to say why you believe there was no goal by him. You are even more welcome to take them to court and dispute this goal, although even with best lawyer in the world you will not win the case since Armstrong clearly scored it, as seen like here. My father is very professional lawyer in the Philippines but he is retired, even if not he would not be able win this case for you because the facts are there and you are in the wrong. I believe in God the Almighty Father and He know that the facts are there and the goal was indeed scored. He sees all things from heaven above.
So, please carefully consider yourself before sending any messages of the sort. I just wanted to help add new information, and you are directly accusing me of non-constructioness and misinformation and indirectly accusing of heresy, vandalism and identity theft. I do not mean to be impolite, but my only intentions was to add the goal and nothing else. Do not undo it next time.

Salamat/Thanks. 66.23.117.53 (talk) 03:16, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

Football database

Hi GiantSnowman, can you please tell me why football database is not a reliable source for stats? I cannot find any consensus in WP football that it is any more or less trust worthy than other sites. Especially within the constraints of just using it for UAE President's Cup stats on Kodjo Laba's article considering that Soccerway does not track this competition. Thanks. Rupert1904 (talk) 10:00, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi Rupert. WP:WPFLINKSNO has details on why FootballDatabase.eu is unreliable. Robby.is.on (talk) 10:07, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Robby. So how should we cite his and other player's statistics in the UAE President's Cup considering Soccerway and Soccerbase do not track this competition? That also goes for the Saudi First Division League, Durand Cup in India, the Malaysia Cup, and I'm sure plenty of other professional competitions too that for one reason or another aren't tracked by these more reliable sites. Rupert1904 (talk) 11:47, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
I don't know, I'm afraid. Maybe editors who edit UAE, India, Malaysia football articles frequently have an idea? Robby.is.on (talk) 12:11, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
We should only source stats from reliable sources. If reliable sources don't track it, then we don't need to display them. GiantSnowman 19:32, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
Don't agree with that whatsoever. These are still professional leagues and competitions and the stats in these competitions are therefore noteworthy. It just shows that there is a bias on soccerway and other sites to European competitions. Rupert1904 (talk) 10:28, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
WP:Verifiability is non-negotiable. That said, I'm sure there are reliable sources out there that are hard to find for us because they are in Arabic or other non-Latin script languages. Robby.is.on (talk) 11:54, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
Agree with Robby - we can't source something to a non-RS just because "it's notable". GiantSnowman 18:42, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
