Thank you for today's Banksia telmatiaea, described: "f ever an article was ready to go to FAC, this is. We have plumbed the depths of obscure sources until convinced we have referenced everything that has ever been written about this plant. We've scaled cyclone fences in search of photographs. We've harassed the world authority on Banksia to verify doubtful photos for us. We've polished and polished and polished." Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

External academic review and publication of Wikipedia pages

[edit]

Hi, This is a note to ask: would you be interested in submitting any articles for external, academic peer review to improve their accuracy and generate a citable publication?

The WikiJournal of Science (www.wikijsci.org) and WikiJournal of Humanities (www.wikijhum.org) aim to couple the rigour of academic peer review with the extreme reach of the encyclopedia. For existing Wikipedia articles, it's a great way to get additional feedback from external experts. Peer-reviewed articles are dual-published both as standard academic PDFs, as well as having changes integrated back into Wikipedia. This improves the scientific accuracy of the encyclopedia, and rewards authors with citable, indexed publications. It also provides much greater reach than is normally achieved through traditional scholarly publishing.

The WP:WikiJournal article nominations page should allow simple submission of existing Wikipedia pages for external review. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 03:12, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Synaphea spinulosa Taxonomic history (Mabberley's account)

[edit]

David Mabberley (Botanical Revelations,2019, p7) tells a far more likely story:

"The surviving specimen said to be from such 'herborisings' is held in the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques in Geneva, Switzerland, and represents one of the the two species notable for being the first plants restricted to Australia to be named according to the Linnaean binomial convention in the 'sexual system' of the Swedish doctor and naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-78), a classification of plants base on the numbers of sexual parts (stamens and pistils) in the flowers.... They were named and illustrated in the Flora Indica (1768) of Nikolaas Burman (1733-93), a Dutch doctor and botanist, at least one of them coming from surgeon-botanist Christiaan Kleijnhoff (d. 1777), who established the first botanic garden in the tropics, in what is now called Jakarta, Indonesia. It is not known whether they were young plants from Kleijnhoff's garden (though neither is obvious from the names in his 'Descriptio plantarum'). However, if they had been raised from seeds collected on the voyage, this would perhaps help explain the absence of flowers, though Vlamingh was too late for the flowers of both species in any case. Indeed, as they have no flowers, the scraps were at first taken to be from ferns. The first is a wattle, Acacia truncata (Leguminosae), ..... The second, his 'Polypodium spinulosum', of which a specimen survives in Geneva, is a Synaphea (Proteaceae). Although these are technical 'firsts', no-one at the time knew where they had come from, and they therefore had no contemporary effect in revealing the flora of Australia to Europeans".

Thus, Mabberley believes that the specimens were grown in Jakarta from seed collected by Vlamingh and then later, with little idea of provenance, specimens sent to Burman... Thus what continued to exist from Vlamingh's men's herborising on the Swan, has very little to do with the careful pressing of specimens collected on site to be carried on a voyage, but rather more to do with a relatively swift collection of seed. So the statement "it is difficult to credit that far more abundant and showy plants would have been passed over in favour of the unremarkable S. spinulosum", would seem to be not to be the case.

Additionally, APNI gives the Burman reference as: Burman, N.L. (1768), Flora Indica: cui accedit series zoophytorum indicorum, nec non Prodromus Florae Capensis: 233, t. 67, fig. 1 in which Burman describes the type as "ex Java" (from Java).

I think there is a need to rewrite the last two sentences in the second paragraph of this section, to accommodate Mabberley's account, and am hoping you might be of the same view. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:50, 3 April 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Margaret, thanks for an interesting read. I'm not very active here at the moment. A tag has been placed on William Perrin (convict) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Administrative permissions and inactivity reminder

[edit]

Information iconThis is a reminder that established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. You are receiving this annual reminder since you have averaged less than 50 edits per year over the last 5 years.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to reengage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to be engaged with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:24, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Banksia brownii scheduled for TFA

[edit]

This is to let you know that the Banksia brownii article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 12, 2023. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page blurb, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 12, 2023, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. If you wish to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/April 2023.

I suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:44, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Coilostylis indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 07:27, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This bot is broken. At the time this message was posted, I'd made 114 edits in the past 60 months. A little over-eager to strip people of their admin rights, eh? Hesperian 10:47, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for Archiving Your Talk Page

[edit]

Hello Hesperian,

I hope this message finds you well. I've noticed that your Talk page has grown quite extensive, which is a testament to your active engagement on Wikipedia. However, I'd like to suggest considering archiving some of the older discussions.

Archiving can lead to several benefits, including:

  • Better Organization: It makes it easier for you and others to navigate through current discussions without scrolling through a long history of past conversations.
  • More Conducive Conversations: With a cleaner Talk page, it becomes simpler for other editors to engage in ongoing discussions and for you to manage responses.
  • Improved User Experience: For users on older computers or slower networks, a shorter page can significantly enhance loading times and overall accessibility.

If you're unsure about how to archive your Talk page, you can find detailed instructions here. I'm also happy to assist if you need any help.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. Your contributions to Wikipedia are greatly valued, and I believe that archiving could make your Talk page even more effective as a tool for collaboration.

Best regards, skarz (talk) 17:01, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Positive memories

[edit]

I recall positive encounters with you in the past when we were both much more active on Wikipedia. I wish you well in whatever you are doing now. Scott Davis Talk 23:43, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh hi Scott! A blast from the past. Someone who was around when I first joined -- OMG -- nearly twenty years ago. Yeah, I'm going really well, thanks. Way too busy for Wikipedia at the moment, but I still love the place and will be back one day. And you? Hesperian 00:39, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very positive memories as well - back one day - hopefully not too long, sorely missed... JarrahTree 09:51, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Weren't you this younger guy? (At least relative to Casliber or me). How did 20 years pass? I'm at WikiConference North America right now, seeing people in person for the first time in five years. And I'm baffled by all the grey hair that has appeared from nowhere. Guettarda (talk) 20:14, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm keeping busy doing similar kinds of things - WikiTree is getting more of my time at present. I spent a lot of effort on places in South Australia in Wikipedia. Wikitree and gradually increasing interest in a few organisations that focus more on the colonial people who lived there. --Scott Davis Talk 14:49, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah...good ol' real life. I returned to dungeonmastering in Dungeons and Dragons a few years ago, which really chews up my desktop hours :) But I try to keep my toe in Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:17, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
