George Ridges

[edit]

Hello,

I am a great great (I think that's correct) Grandson of George Ridges and I see you made an edit to a page for him a year ago.

I stumbled upon this page recently and am astounded there is a page about him! So thank you for creating and/or updating it. I am currently researching our family history and this is just amazing to find.

I don't understand how to make edits on Wikipedia but wondered if you could possibly upload a photo of George to the page for me?

Thank you 86.180.21.113 (talk) 16:42, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Roy Bennett

[edit]

I was working on a Cryptoquote and found it was a quote from Roy T. Bennett. So I looked him up and came across Roy Bennett Former Member of the National Assembly of Zimbabwe

Main Results Description DescriptionRoy Leslie Bennett was a Zimbabwean politician and member of the British South Africa Police. He was also a member of the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe for the seat of Chimanimani, where he was affectionately known as Pachedu. Wikipedia

That book reference is wrong. Roy (L.) Bennett, the Zimbabwean politician, did NOT author this book. It was Roy T. Bennett. I do not know how to make changes on Wikipedia and thought you could. Thank you. 2602:306:3A52:A8F0:21CE:13CB:229E:EACB (talk) 15:15, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Clément Piché

[edit]

Clément Piché has been erroneously credited with an appearance in an NHL game for the Montreal Canadiens across multiple sites (including the Montreal Canadiens themselves). The historians at the Hockey Hall of Fame have addressed this in January 2021 where they found Le Canada, a Montreal daily newspaper that existed from April 1903 to November 1954, published the following: “A daily newspaper from yesterday announced that Piché had been sent on the ice in the game of two nights ago. That was an error, as Piché suffers from the flu and will not even be able to play Saturday night in Ottawa [the article was published on Friday]. The doctor recommended that he not go out this week and he will not be able to resume training before Sunday.” This article should be updated with the information. I have the pdf of the 2021 article but am not familiar enough on how to do the links and all. Xmcd (talk) 20:41, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a photo

[edit]

Hello, I uploaded a photo of myself some time ago to the page about me - Richard Evans (Designer) - but it keeps getting deleted because you tell me I haven't stated the copyright. I have, countless times and am going round and round in circles trying to add the photo which Wikipedia keeps deleting. Help me please! I upload the photo again and again and you tell me it's the same file even though I've changed its name etc. I'm trying to co-operate with Wikipedia but you're not making it easy! User:WikiOriginal-9 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I would like to nominate Red Director to be Editor of the Week. The veteran editor has been editing since 2006 and is one of the most prolific Wikipedians of all time. He has amassed over 1 million edits (#16 all time) in the nearly two decades since he registered his account, adding an untold number of references and making pages conform to style guidelines. I suspect you could go to any modern American football biography and you would be able to find Red Director somewhere in the edit history. Good luck trying to find a bare url on an NFL article. With Red Director around, they are as rare as gold as he is constantly chipping away at things and making the encyclopedia better at a pace and quality that few can match. Question

[edit]

I'm almost done with User:Tavix/List of NFL players but there are still some players missing. Do you have a good way of figuring out who is missing? I am not including 2024 players in the totals. I'll update those at the end of the season. For example, User:Tavix/List of NFL players (S) has 2588 out of 2589 players from PFR. It would be nice if I could figure out who is missing somehow without going through the whole list player by player again. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 02:06, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not the most perfect way, but I am a little tired and have to work tomorrow. I did a quick parse.
These are the URLs that appear on the "S" page on PFR that do not appear on Tavix's page. However, some are 2024 rookies. Hope this helps.
Red Director (talk) 02:54, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice, do you mind telling me how you did that? I'm gonna run it on the other letters too. Thanks a bunch. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 12:18, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome. It is a bit of a difficult process if you are not used to Microsoft Excel, but I will go into detail. I used a Chrome Extension called Link Klipper or Linkclump (cannot remember off the top of my head) to pull the URLs off of PFR in order. It generates an Excel spreadsheet off of your choice. When you do that, you have to clear out all of the secondary links that do not have the needed URLs. For Tavix's page, I get rid of the headers in the source editor and paste everything into Excel on another column. You have to use the TEXTBEFORE or TEXTAFTER function in Excel to get rid of the clutter from PFR and the Wiki on excel to just get the URLs. Paste from the clipboard when finished to get the formulas out and static text into Excel. Paste the information from Column 2 into the bottom of Column 1 and do the Excel feature to highlight duplicate cells. That turns the duplicate cells red by default. Sort the column by color to make the white cells, which are unique, at the top or bottom to parse out. It is a bit of a process but it seems to work. Best wishes. Red Director (talk) 13:19, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know of a way to fill out all the bare refs at User:Tavix/List of NFL players? I tried that Refill thing a little bit but it didn't come out quite right. Maybe I didn't do it right. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 12:49, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let me set a time together and I can go through all the letters with the previous method. It may be the weekend. Is that okay? Red Director (talk) 14:18, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Previous method? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 14:39, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Refill does add the player profile titles. That's the only thing that really needs added. The rest of the formatting can be done with "find and replace" since they are all the same. The only problem is that Refill is kinda slow for me on these huge pages. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 15:04, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I meant the method that I outlined above. If you are good with it, I can run that this weekend or a night this week. It will just take a while. Red Director (talk) 15:12, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you are saying in regard to the reFill tool. I just tried it as well and it is slow for me. I sadly do not think there is a faster way. Red Director (talk) 15:23, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How does the method above help with reference formatting? Just curious. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:00, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That above was just for parsing through data to find what sites on PFR were not on Tavix's page. Red Director (talk) 16:01, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I thought you said you were going to use it for reference formatting? The lists are done. I just need to format the bare urls. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:04, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good on that. I do not know a quicker way to fix the bare URLs so far. That does not mean the correct way does not exist. I will play around and see what I can find. Red Director (talk) 16:06, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm gonna try reFill again now but it's slow on the bigger pages. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:08, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I finished a small one: User:Tavix/List of NFL players (Y–Z). Hopefully, the big ones don't crash my computer. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:14, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I knocked out all of the small pages but I keep getting errors during the middle of the big pages, which stops the whole process. reFill only went partway through B and F before I received an error. I went ahead and saved what I had anyway but then when I used reFill on the lists the second time, it messed up the ones it already did :( ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:10, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, this is my last message about this. I have decided to just do it section-by-section by pasting stuff over to my sandbox and running reFill over there, instead of trying to do the whole page at once. Thanks. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:06, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all! I have an idea where I can make refs through Excel using the PFR site data, but it would have to cross-checked to Tavix's page. There is no quick way to do this I fear, but I will keep thinking. Red Director (talk) 19:12, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry about it anymore. I'm doing it pretty quick by doing section-by-section. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:14, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Team lists

[edit]

At PFR, scroll down to "Frivolities" and click on Players who played for multiple teams. If you enter the same team twice, it generates an all-time roster. For example, here is the list of Arizona Cardinals players. Click "All Players" at that link to see the list (2104 players). (Someone at PFR told me how to do this after I emailed them about all-time rosters.) There is also a "share & export" button for Excel and stuff.

So basically, I am wondering if there is a way to generate the team all-time rosters on-wiki based off of linking the PFR URLs up to the URLs at our master list (List of NFL players). NOT asking you to do anything, just brainstorming. I would like to accomplish this with as little manual input as possible. Doing this manually would take forever, lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:05, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm putting all the players in a master list right now. Then I'm going to put the article wikilinks in their own column in Excel. Then I will do your method above for the rest. Wish me luck. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:23, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! I will look into the above later. Whatever we are trying to do is for the greater good so no worries about picking my brain. Red Director (talk) 18:29, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It won't let me save it. It said the page was too long. I didn't even know that was possible, lol. I'll have to try and save it offline. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:32, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah maybe at some point there is a maximum byte limit stored in the code. 256, 65536, 4294967296 etc.Red Director (talk) 18:37, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It actually did say what it was but I don't remember. It was 2600 kb or mb or something. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:59, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I created an NFL player "master list" txt file, and then pasted it into the first column of an Excel worksheet. I then "split" the column into two separate columns at the < symbol (from <ref>). I then used find and replace to delete all the extraneous text from the second column so now I just have Column A of already disambiguated article names and Column B of bare urls. I then saved my master Excel spreadsheet so I will not have to do the steps before this every time. Everything that follows below, I will have to do every time but it doesn't take that long.

Steps to generate an NFL all-time roster after you have already created the master Excel spreadsheet:

  • 1. Open master Excel spreadsheet.
  • 2. Use LinkClipper here to extract links to a txt file.
  • 3. Open txt file and remove all non-relevant text.
  • 4. Paste the txt file URLs under Column B in Excel.
  • 5. Conditional Formatting --> Highlight Cells Rules --> Duplicate Values
  • 6. Sort by color and remove white rows.
  • 7. Paste the list of players on-wiki (Example: User:WikiOriginal-9/List of Arizona Cardinals players)
  • 8. Use "find and replace" and ReFill to fill out referencing on-wiki.
  • 9. Done.

The only thing though is that I have 2,353 Cardinals players and PFR says there are 2,104 but everything else worked right. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:18, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! Was this so you can reference it anytime or would you like for me to do something with it? No problem either way. Red Director (talk) 20:20, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I was just letting you know. I'm gonna have to figure out why PFR says there are only 2104 Cardinals players... But I think this method will work good. I basically just copied what you did, lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:23, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, last message, but I figured it out. I accidentally pasted some of the lists like List of NFL players (I) twice into my master spreadsheet, so that's what caused the extra 200 duplicates. Once I remove those, it will come out right. Thanks for your help! ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:38, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. We are all in this together. Red Director (talk) 20:43, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All active teams have complete player lists now. I couldn't have done it without your Link Klipper / Excel explanation above. Thanks! ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:41, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to help! Red Director (talk) 19:46, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[edit]

Please don't take this is a criticism because you are awesome and I love the work you do here. But do you think you can add maybe add all the links for the footballstats template you've been adding at the same time? It just seems kinda counterproductive to add links sporadically over months and would help to have all players having the same consistent links. Yankees10 22:45, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's a fair ask. It does take a while to parse the data by hand on multiple sites is my only rationale. However, not a big deal. Will do. Red Director (talk) 00:46, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The reason Josh Heupel's page is like that is he played college football, got drafted into the NFL, and is a college football coach. He has to have both templates for the time being unless there is a major style change. Red Director (talk) 22:22, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
